View Full Version : Symphony X -- Cleveland, OH -- April 12th, 2008

This was my second time seeing Into Eternity and Symphony X, and my third time seeing Epica, and I've gotta say that I was surprised by all of their performances, although not necessarily in a positive way. Basically, we got into the venue pretty early because we were like...the tenth/eleventh people in line, so that ended up working out pretty well.

Sound check took FOREVER, and because of that both Into Eternity and Epica's setlists were cut short. It hurt Epica, but Into Eternity ended up being really cool about it and just talked to the fans while they waited. My buddy and I were in front of their bassist and we ended up talking to him for a bit, and after about 45 or so minutes, they finally got to play. First time I saw them was opening for Dream Theater, and though the crowd wasn't really into it, I thought they were fun to watch live, and I ended up getting The Scattering of Ashes because of their performance. This time, knowing what to expect, I was pretty let down because they just weren't as fun to watch, and there were only a handful of people in the crowd really enjoying themselves. Nevertheless, they put on a good show, and Stu and Tim had some great back-and-forth, and Stu naturally did a bit of comedy for the crowd. My personal favorite bit of his was leading the audience in a chant of "FUCK CANCER".

Into Eternity:

The Prelude to Woe (Intro)
Diagnosis Terminal (New Song)
Severe Emotional Distress
Black Light Ending (New Song)
Splintered Visions
Surrounded by Night
Timeless Winter

Next up was Epica, and their sound check likewise lasted almost an hour, so they were also forced to end their set early. I didn't think that having Amanda fill in for Simone would change much for the band, but I was surprised because it did. I mean...she has a great voice and all, but honestly, it just didn't FEEL like Epica. Nevertheless, they played and it was great, and more of the crowd was into it. When they said they had to cut it short, a bit over half of the crowd went into a "ONE MORE SONG" chant that they unfortunately were unable to honor. The entire band wasn't as energetic as they have been before, more than likely because they were angry with the sound people. Either way, my buddy and I managed to snag a setlist afterwards, which was pretty cool.

The Obsessive Devotion
Fools of Damnation
Cry for the Moon

So after another fairly long wait (surprisingly enough), we finally got Symphony X. The only thing that surprised me is that they were actually MORE energetic than the first time I saw them last year, which I didn't think was humanly possible. The crowd ate it up monstrously, which just increased the enjoyment of the show overall. I was right in front of Romeo this time, and watching him play is just...the most inspirational thing ever, honestly. Russell was fantastic as always, and he also did assorted little comedic bits in between certain songs, talking about things ranging from Fall Out Boy to internet animal porn (I shit you not). Everyone played beautifully, and at the end I managed to get a pick from Romeo, which is fantastic. Either way, it's mostly the same set as it has been.

Symphony X:

Oculus ex Inferni
Set the World on Fire
Serpent's Kiss
Paradise Lost
Egypt/Death of Balance
The Walls of Babylon
Inferno (Unleash the Fire)
Smoke and Mirrors
Revelation/Divine Wings VII
Eve of Seduction
Sea of Lies

Overall a fantastic show, regardless of the retarded sound guys. We got to meet the bassist and lead guitarist of Into Eternity after the show, and they were both really cool and were happy that we were some of the only people really enjoying ourselves during their set. Overall, though, Symphony X basically continues to prove to me that they're essentially the best live band of all time.

My friend Mike was there, I was supposed to be. Instead, I took the ACT, went to a flea market, and watched a movie. Fair enough.
