Hmm...I don't really have anything to add that hasn't been mentioned already. The Sword's new one rocks, it'll probably make my top 10. Overall, though, I think this is going to end up being an off year, because almost all of my favorite bands put out records last year. The year could be redeemed if Opeth's new record is great, as well as if Dillinger Four actually puts one out like they said they would.

That's why you have to explore new bands. As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as an "off year".

I agree, and you're right, these are the kinds of years where I usually find a lot of new bands. I guess I just meant it's "off" year in that there aren't many albums that I'm excited for right off the bat.

I mean, c'mon. Explore new bands? Look who you're talking to ;)

SomewhereInTime72
04-13-2008, 11:12 AM
On "off years" I don't really buy a lot of new releases, cause when I decide to check out a new band (which happens more often without a bunch of my favorite bands putting out new albums) I tend to try out an older band or an older album by a band who put out an album recently or something.

as far as exploring new bands goes, usually their latest albums arent good representations of what theyre capable of. think of some bands with really amazing albums, then go and look at the most recent one they put out. not a good marker.

Wednesday 13 - Skeletons

If you like that kind of thing, it's outstanding.

Walls of Jericho's new Redemption EP is also excellent. If you like the mellow side of Stone Sour, check that out.

And power fans, check out the debut by X-World/5. Magnus Rosen (ex-Hammerfall) on bass, Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind/Eidolon) on vocals, Andy LaRocque (ex-King Diamond) on guitar and Reeves Gabrels (Razor Ball) on guitar. Excellent album.

The new MSG doesn't suck either.

A great epic metal band from Germany! Epic metal as Bathory taught us! The first thing that I noticed was the lead guitars! Awesome!

This is the first Crom full length album. The band has also released the EP "The Fallen Beauty".

This band comes from Sweden and they play AOR/Melodic Rock! This is their debut, but I think that the band has a lot to give to our music!

These are two releases that really impressed me, and that's why I put them in the top of my post.

As many of you said, the albums of Avantasia, Firewind, Metallica, JOP,Circle II Circle, Tiamat, Sister Sin etc are on the top of my 2008 releases list!

Second half of the year hasn't really brought forth too much stuff worth raving about. The new Toxic Holocaust is rad as fuck, best thrash album of the year no doubt, and a couple surprising punk albums like the new Fucked Up and Transistor Transistor have been pretty cool, but otherwise not much has been very notable. The new Amon Amarth and Motorhead are both rock solid but obviously don't break the mold at all and maybe don't quite have the amount of catchy/memorable songs that their previous albums did.

These are some I'm really looking forward to hearing that haven't come out yet:

Bible Of The Devil- Freedom Metal
Valkyrie- Man of Two Visions
Hammers Of Misfortune- Fields/Church Of Broken Glass
Darkthrone- Dark Thrones and Black Flags

EDIT: I should mention actually that the new Burst album 'Lazarus Bird' is fucking great, probably the best modern progressive metal album I've ever heard. It's not typically my style but I definitely recommend checking it out.

One of those people who's just like: "Old school! Old school!" all the time and putting down newer metal, complaining that nothing good is coming out these days.Just like? or sort of like? LOL You'll notice like on further scrutiny like I said "most of the new stuff." I am not like "all the time putting down like newer metal." Not all new stuff is like metal either, or is it? I do like some new stuff such as Manticora for example as well like and so therefore, I am like "not complaining that like nothing good is coming out these days." So your point is like.......................what exactly?

I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that Rome - Masse Mensch Material has not been mentioned yet. Really can't recommend it enough. Dark neofolk/industrial stuff, with deep, haunting vocals (almost a la Peter Steele, but that's kind of an unfair comparison) and some martial elements. At first I was a bit turned off by the martial aspect, and I kind of suspected they fell into that category of neofolk bands with fascist leanings, but some content on their myspace seems to indicate the exact opposite, if anything. This album was a grower, but after a few listens it shot up to #1 on my (admittedly short) 2008 list.

Got a few more for the last month or so, if any of you care to try them:

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (Great, catchy indie pop/rock--don't listen to what people say about them, just listen for yourself)

No Age - Nouns (uber-cool noise-pop, heavily influenced by My Bloody Valentine and probably many others)

Cynic - Traced in Air (very melodic, avant-garde/prog/something with basically no wankery, focused on Buddhist/meditational themes, might be better than their only other album Focus, which came out 15 years ago)

Gridlink - Amber Gray (basically the continuation of the broken-up Discordance Axis--frantic, technical/progressive grind)

I'd like to suggest three really good hip-hop albums that came out this year.

Nas - Untitled
The Game - LAX
Immortal Technique - The 3rd World

I heard it was awful, worse than Enemy of God.

Worse than Enemy of God could still be good. But I dunno, I was in a different place in my musical life in '05, my love for Enemy of God may just be fond memories I'm unwilling to give up.

Cynic - Traced in Air!!!

1. If you're a fan of prog, you owe it to yourself to hear this.

2. If you're not a fan of prog, get it anyway, but give it a few listens to sink in; I didn't really like it at first.

3. Get it you fucks!!:mad::mad: Enough of you seem to be excited about the upcoming Cynic tour, but nobody I know of besides Brad and I have heard this/are voting for it.

Gama Bomb - Citizen Brain

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/66/CitizenBrain_Cover.jpg

Here's a metal band from Dublin, Ireland playing old school 80's thrash. They sound alot like Municiple Waste. Screaming vocals, clean instrument tuning, fast tempo, plenty of riffs, all done by the book. The lyrics are about stupid shit like bullet belts, zombie invasions, hearing evil commands when you play records backwards, and fucking with the space-time continuum. It's a winner no matter how you look at it.

I plan to rank this pretty high on my list, and some of you may get upset that I don't put more emphasis on "real" music. But I always think more credit should go to goofy thrash bands instead of bands who take themselves all seriously for a couple of reasons. 1- people in this world need to lighten up, most conflicts happen because people think everything is serious business, and 2- 80s thrash is king. so give it a listen: http://www.mediafire.com/?9dc5xdgmlgl

EDIT: also, best album art evar

That was actually the worst album I heard all year. That and the new Witchfinder General were the only new albums that I just deleted after 1 listen, was actually a chore to get through once.

If you guys wanna hear a beast prog metal album I recommend the new Burst.

dude, you offer up toxic holocaust as an alternative? you think the dude would change it up a bit, the lyrics get mad repetitive. he doesnt like jesus, we get it. i know its just one guy writing all the music, but still. i dont see how you could shoot down what i posted but then say you liked toxic holocaust.

The vocals were either that grating wannabe falsetto clean singing or generic growls, there were no memorable riffs, no songwriting skills just a bunch of unrelated ideas thrown together it seems like, really talented players obviously but just totally jumping all over the place without creating any real atmosphere or vibe. The production also has that overly modern/processed squeaky-clean sound which I can't stand. A couple songs had promising intros if I remember, the quieter kinda ambient parts, but then they tried to be metal and failed. If the whole album was more into the mellow territory and was completely instrumental I probably would've liked it.

And the Witchfinder General album was just awful. Didn't even have the original singer on it.

Cuz thrash is all about teh riffz, and Toxic Holocaust has em more than most of the newer bands including Gama Bomb. Plus I like the vocals and the grittier overall vibe that they have. No band has written any intelligent thrash metal lyrics that I can recall since the early 90's. Zombies, gore, violence, war, death, evil, Satan, apocalypse, moshing, beer, weed, parties, etc is about the extent.

im not throwing them under the bus, i like their music too, i just dont see that much of a gap between the quality of music of TH and GB. plus and i have more fun listening to thrash and NWBHM than some of the other big trends at the moment, like melodic death metal.

infact ive got a friend here on campus whos got his own band ( http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=124660685 ed repka did the cover art, pretty cool ) and im usually the one defending TH, since he doesnt seem to think they're that great.

Honestly, even calling it 'metal' is questionable; I think one would be on firmer ground to call it prog rock, albeit a heavy sort of prog rock. That, I think, has something to do with the "lack of memorable riffs"--Focus had them, for sure, but I don't believe they're as concerned with that on Traced in Air.

I'll admit the growls are generic, but they're really just for accent, and I think the combo with Paul's "ethereal" vocals--which are obviously in the spotlight--works quite well. I honestly really like Paul's voice, and if it grates on you, there's not much I can say. I will say that calling his singing "wannabe falsetto" is off the mark; he's not trying to imitate metal falsettos, he's using the ethereal, vulnerable style he used in his alt/prog rock band Aeon Spoke (which you might dig, if you like the mellower stuff on Traced in Air, and can get used to Paul's singing).

You said you listened to it once and deleted it. If I had done the same, I might have said the same things about it "totally jumping all over the place without creating any real atmosphere or vibe". If you give it another chance or two, though, things might start to make sense.

I'm also gonna try and listen to Traced In Air more, because it sounds like my sort of thing. Except I didn't really like it the first time I heard it. I never really liked Focus that much either, though... So I dunno.

Everything by Cynic is hard to get into, but once you do, they're very rewarding. I first heard Focus ages ago, and I'm only really getting into it now.

Also, Toxic Holocaust happens to be one of the best bands of the new wave of thrash, even if their new album wasn't as good as the last two--and as far as I can tell, they were ahead of the trend. (Though I still resent Joel for signing to Relapse and appearing on MTV. :bouville:)

i like them i just dont see the big difference, aside from tuning, that would make TH rule and GB suck.
