View Full Version : News: Introducing TAGS For Our Set Lists

What's a tag? A "tag" is a way of describing the content of a thread. In our case, a tag is no more than a band's name. Tags are going change the way people use metalsetlists.

The short version: just click See http://www.metalsetlists.com/tags.php?tag=iron+maiden

The longer version: At the bottom of each thread after the last post of the page, there is a new box that says "Tags". On the right side, there is a link that says "Edit tags". Click on it and another box appears. You can either add the bands name as a tag. If the thread contains more than one band, you add them both separated by a comma.

ex1: the set list is just Iron Maiden. So you enter "iron maiden" for the tag.

ex2: the set lists is Iron Maiden w/ Motorhead. You enter "iron maiden, motorhead".

That's it. So what does this all do for METALSETLISTS? Now see http://www.metalsetlists.com/tags.php?tag=iron+maiden Want to see more tags in action right now? see http://www.metalsetlists.com/tags.php and click on a band's name or just search for it. Under the SEARCH button in the nav bar, there's also a new option a Tag Search.

With tags in place, it's trivial to make a real set list directory (not just) a search. I've got mucho evil plans. Maybe I've been listening to way too much GWAR tonight. So METALSETLISTS needs your help. Yes, that means you, you lurking-never-post-jackshit-metalhead too! Any registered member / non-banned-asshole can add, edit, delete a tag on a thread. Every edit is marked with your name. Just one little warning: fucking up our tags or site on purpose will get you banned asap. Please just tag the set list threads in the main set list forum and let our poor threads alone! <pavo plays a little floyd on air guitar> How do you know if a thread needs a tag? There is a a little marker to the far right of the thread title if it has one. Check the latest threads.. they have tags and the marker.

ravenheart brought to my attention that "down" doesn't work because vbulletin has an exclusion list of common words... please let me know if any of you find another one... I'll exempt it too...

I guess goatwhore is not that list... :D

Each tag add/edit may take a little longer but instead of you and DethMaiden, the whole board can help. That should make it easier overall.

Moving forward, it's a cinch. :metal:

Yeah. I have done quite a few, but it hasnt even dented the overall effort. My guesses are these lazy jerks won't do it. :hmm:

And reading over all old ones makes me miss Oscar.

And does the winner get something cool?

The winner pretty much gets the same thing I got for spending eight hours upgrading software and reworking the site: the satisifaction that goes along with doing something cool for metal.

Those must interested in helping shepherd the content of metalsetlists will have a bigger role to play in the site soon. Consider that a temporary lifting of Hecho's Law.

New problem. There's a length limit on the tags. "Maylene and the Sons of Disaster" is too long by three characters.

That's because you know it's there. If someone comes along and searches for "three (the band)", and therefore the other one doesn't come up, then the tags haven't done their job.

Probably best for bands like that to tag with both. Cover all the bases.

I didn't mean I didnt care that we had two different tags, I meant that I didnt care which tag we used....but that is a good idea to put different variations of band names. I think when we get all the tags done, we can do a clean up...to clean up 'Red Chord' vs 'The Red Chord', and the like.

ravenheart
03-11-2008, 08:17 AM
Ah, gotcha.

We might want to think about things like "COC" and "Corrosion of Conformity" too.

I think bands who's official title has "The" in it should retain the "The" in the tag. The Black Crowes, for instance.

I've made sure 11-16 are all tagged.

There's a few setlists tagged with "Dark Tranquility" which, while the spelling is correct for the word, is incorrect as far as the band name goes, since they spell it with two l's.

Should we do this the same way that the 3 issue was just resolved, since it seems to be a fairly common mistake?

Sorry, that would be my fault. I deleted the tag with 2 L's because I thought it was a mistake. Ed will let us know later how he wants to handle it. I have been working my way from oldest to newest. I am up to page 40. We should be done this weekend at this rate. Thanks for your help!
