I really hate Phil Anselmo, but I have to admit I really love his vocals on that song. In the beginning he had such a cool thing going. He was still singing generally melodically, but just with a really heavy edge to it. I really dug that. But even by Vulgar Display of Power it started to turn into just too much of a growl for me.

In the beginning Phil had such a cool thing going. He was still singing generally melodically, but just with a really heavy edge to it.

He still did that up to Reinventing The Steel, just a) he sang melodicaly less often, b) his ability to sing like in Cemetary Gates was gone, c) the untrained ear might mistake his actual singing for backup vocals, d) it doesn't take rocket science to figure out that Phil's vocals seriously deteriorated over time.
