Well, in my professional opinion:

1. Lame. Seriously, not a good album, let alone top 10, let alone fucking album of the year.
2. Second straight year my #1 has been the board's #2.
3. I'm actually proud of the board for putting it this high :D
4. Really good album, even if it's "safe mediocrity"
5. Who hates Clutch? I mean, really. Good call putting them in the top 10.
6. Awful album that is everything wrong with progressive metal.
7. Okay, it's Gamma Ray. Skip.
8. I honestly wanted to like this album more than I did based on the myspace songs I heard, but on principle alone, this is fucking awesome.
9. Lame. What I heard sounded like the soundtrack to a boring game of Dungeons & Dragons: Circle Jerk Edition.
10. Most brutal album to ever make our site list, I think. Awesome!

Hmmm. In my own (actually) professional opinion:

1. Fair enough. It's a great album. It made my top ten. Not number one, but certainly the most widely appreciated album on these boards, so a deserving winner.
2. Good album. Continues a trend of decent PT albums, but there were better prog albums this year.
3. No comment.
4. Good, solid album. Not exactly ground breaking, but steers well clear of boring as well.
5. Great band. Their most boring and unimaginative album. Doesn't deserve it just because they can do 100 times better. And why doesn't it get a cover?
6. Way better than Octatedium but not a top ten album.
7. Terrible. If pushing the envelope is one extreme, this is folding up in the corner, probably not even being noticed and getting thrown in the trash by mistake.
8. Never understood it. Never will. Not commenting.
9. Only decent album they've ever made. Contains my personal track of the year (Poet And The Pendulum) but not a top ten album. Wish he'd stick to making Tarot albums, to be honest.
10. About as good as death metal gets (without being Opeth anyway), and comfortably their best effort, but too one-dimensional to be a top ten album.

My thoughts on the list:
1. While not my favorite, it certainly came close, and clearly was liked by so many people here, so I think it's fair enough that this one.
2. Love the band, didn't love the album. Whatever.
3. Aw what the fuck.
4. A lot of people like this album but I just don't get the hype. This was boring .
5. Same thing.
6. This makes United Abominations look like Rust In Peace. Bullshit.
7. Give me old Gamma Ray please.
8. Hah, I heard a few songs, not my thing. But it's placement here is... interesting. :D
9. Just when you thought Nightwish couldn't get any worse...
10. Once again, not my thing. So... whatever.

I think I actually like 11-20 a lot better.

It may shock you, but not everyone here listens to metal 24 hours a day. I listened to quite a few metal albums this year, many of which were awesome, but at the end of the day The Con was more interesting, unique and creative than any of them. I fail to see the problem here.

Interesting, maybe. Unique and creative, no. I have heard that style of music done by ALOT of bands. Nothing special about them.

It's also a tightly-knit community of very few members who have grown and evolved together musically. We don't have enough members to only talk about metal here. We talk about music. It just happens that most of us listen to metal more so than other things.

Unique and creative, no. I have heard that style of music done by ALOT of bands. Nothing special about them.I find that hard to believe, seeing as I listen to a lot more of this kind of stuff than you do, and there definitely are not many bands who sound like them, especially the more experimental songs.

Christ... Megadeth, Dream Theater, Iced Earth, Helloween and Gamma Ray in the top ten?

Didn't the Onslaught album come out in '06?

But the only thing they got close to right was getting Primordial and Symphorce in the top 20.

You can tell the top ten is voting for names, the next ten is voting for records.

Maiden33
01-16-2008, 06:44 AM
I know as soon as I weigh in here this is gonna go straight to hell, but I can't help myself:

I don't really see the point in doing a year-end voting album voting thread because there's too few people here and too diverse of tastes, so the results always come out pretty distorted and no one winds up happy. The cliques vote their 1 or 2 albums they love into the top 10, and most everyone bitches about the other stuff.
Contrary to what Brad argued with me on AIM last night, I don't believe the purpose of this list should be to showcase our "diversity" as a board.
As I understand it, a top 10 voting thread is to get a general feel for the best albums of the year through discussing and voting on them... not to become a pissing match for a bunch of hypocritical martyrs for diversity, which is all anything like this ever is on this board.

powerslave_85
01-16-2008, 09:21 AM
As I understand it, a top 10 voting thread is to get a general feel for the best albums of the year through discussing and voting on them...Isn't that what we did? A couple of anomalies aside, the final list ended up being pretty fucking predictable. Besides, if you ask me, the overall top 10 is almost meaningless, because IMO the purpose of this whole exercise is to get us all to think critically about the music we listened to over the course of the year, and maybe in the process enjoy it more and find things about those albums we didn't notice the first time. And, along the way, discuss and debate the albums we had in common and help people find new things to listen to (there's definitely a few albums on my list that I wouldn't have bothered with if people here hadn't recommended them).

But yeah, I guess none of that matters because a pop album made it in the top 10 :tp:

I have. Honestly I don't know what it is about the "girl with the acoustic guitar" schtick that I think is cheesy and played out, especially since the only other woman I can think of that's done it is Joan Baez. Now with that being said, I listen to the vocals, and I understand what feel and what sound she's attempting to achieve, but she's missing it just barely. As a result it creates a very grating affect for my ears.

01-16-2008, 10:27 AM
The fact that Megadeth isn't even in the top 25 is a sign of hope imo. Unfortunately, King Diamond being #13 (lololololololololol) kind of shatters that.

I actually really dug The Apostasy. At The Left Hand Ov God is probably my favorite Behemoth song.

edit: nvm, I get At The Left Hand Ov God confused with Ov Fire And The Void ALL THE TIME. I still like The Apostasy though.

I Like The Apostasy probably more than Evangelion. Also had The Apostasy signed by the band until some asshole stole my CDs about 5 years ago.

But seriously though, Snakes for the Divine is High on Fire's "worst" by far. The drums were fucked and the songs were just not there (except for the title track obviously).

THE SONGS WERE ABSOLUTELY THERE AND ON TOP OF YOUR MOM! Yes the title track is the best but fucking Fire Flood & Plague, Frost Hammer, Bastard Samurai, How Dark We Pray are all classics!

I'm inclined to agree with this.

Yep, they're so classic that HoF plays those songs all the time right? The only ones that've survived past the album's touring cycle are the title track and Frost Hammer.

Whelp, apparently I'm alone in my opinion but I stand by it. I think it's crazy though that HoF are such a unique band in that there is literally no common consensus on their best/worst record. They're a band that has escaped canonization.

I would say DITC is HOF's worst album, but Ethereal is the final nail in Snakes For The Divine's coffin.

(although the notion that High On Fire has any "bad" albums is truly laughable)

I remember Revolver magazine did one of the worst reviews I've ever read for Blessed Black Wings when it came out. The reviewer liked it and even gave it an eight out of ten. But he kept going on about how much they reminded him of Slayer and Slayer, Slayer, Slayer. In the next issue they printed one of the angriest letters from a reader who wrote how much he loved Slayer and went out and bought Blessed Black Wings based entirely off their review. Needless to say he was pretty mad and wanted his money back. It was pretty funny. And I have to side with the guy, at least in his complaint of the writer totally mis-classifying High on Fire.*

Anyway, of the little High on Fire I've heard it's my favorite album because of the third song and the last song.

High On Fire setlists are a terrible way of gauging song opinion. They've only been playing 3 songs from the new album because there's so much else to cover (plus their sets are kind of short to begin with). Blessed Black Wings and Surrounded By Thieves barely gets touched aside from 2 or 3 songs. Plus if they did nothing but songs from the current album and the previous album and not touch anything else their fans would be uber-pissed at them. There's only so many songs one can fit in a setlist of normal size, never mind the 10 or 12 sets they do recently.

Weren't Teegan and Sara that lesbian pop group that did the entrance music for Victoria back when she was in WWE?

Wrong lesbian duo. You're thinking of TaTu.

Yeah, I'm gonna be the one to go ahead and say that I think Death is This Communion is by far HoF's best album. It was the album that got me into them and the title track is an absolute masterpiece. If I were to go with a least favorite, it'd probably have to be the newest one, I didn't think much of it when it came and haven't really listened to it since.

That's what I'm saying, see I'm convinced that De Vermis is the best thing they've ever done. HoF have the wonkiest catalog around, no one can agree on which albums are better than the others.

You're spot-on with this. They're one of the rare bands that doesn't really have a clear consensus as to what their best record is. Personally, I think Blessed Black Wings is their best with De Vermis being a close second and Art of Defense is the worst by a country mile

It's a wonderful thing really. To call it wonky is insulting.
