why is a regressive band headlining a progressive music festival?

True. Iced Earth are neither progressive metal nor power metal. Not to mention they're drowning in a sea of musical retardedness at this point.

It's also worth noticing that Astral Doors have dropped off and Rob Rock has been brought in to replace them.

Well, I actually like Rob Rock moreso than Astral Doors, but on the downside, AD probably would've actually played a couple of other shows while here, whereas Rob Rock will just do a one off show.

What's the reason for AD dropping off?

What's the reason for AD dropping off?

From Astral Doors' latest Myspace blog:

In agreement with the promoter of ProgPower USA (Glenn Harveston) as well as our management (Intromental), we have decided to turn down the offer of playing at PPUSA in Atlanta, Georgia this year. The reason is simply that we have to do some more European touring in 2008 before going to USA, and thus our economy won't allow us to make this trip yet. Instead we've made the great deal with PPUSA that we'll perform, come hell or high water, at the festival in 2009. Thanks to the promoter for helping us make this hard decision much easier for all concerned.

Yeah, I spotted that. That's cool. Means they won't be cancelling their appearance at Sweden Rock :D

Line-up completed by second headliner, Amorphis.

Bleh.

This is the worst lineup this festival has ever had... which is a bit odd. I thought the point was to get better as time went by.

You're near enough the only person who thinks that. Most people are ecstatic to have Riverside, JOP, IE and Iron Savior together.

For my money it's missing a Primal Fear or a Blind Guardian but still, I'd never be making the trip to Atlanta anyway.

If I compare this year to the years of past:

2006: Jorn, Evergrey, Circle II Circle, Thunderstone, Vision Divine, Savage Circus, etc
2004: Weapons of Mass Destruction (Savatage reunion), Edguy, Kamelot, Brainstorm, Tad Morose, etc
2002: Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Edguy, Angra, Silent Force, etc

or even the other years of the past...

I think this year is a signifigant dissapointment. I love JOP, but getting them on that bill is no accomplishment. They're located in Florida anyway.

True, this year doesn't have alot of "known" bands, but I really feel that Amorphis and the first announced show for Iced Earth w/ Barlow make up for it (Even if it doesn't end up being the first show, though I wouldn't doubt it - I mean, he IS still a cop and they will be busy recording the new IE for a portion of this year anyways). I'm a little disappointed at Astral Doors having to drop off and be replaced by Rob Rock (I was looking forward to AD), but since they're confirmed for 2009, it's fine.

Iron Savior, Riverside, JOP, Andromeda, Volbeat, Elvenking...

I'm sure I'll be down there, you better believe it. This is probably the most diverse lineup Glenn's ever put together.

Amorphis is the second headliner.

This festival is now a lot better than I thought it would be. I can only hope this means more U.S. dates for Amorphis (if they're finally here, they better fucking do it).

I don't see amorphis touring the US ever again...last time they did (2005 i think?) was very poorly attended.
