I won't be able to do this......Seems like a waste of time, since I am not very well-versed in my metal "classics."

I've still got a ways to go for mine. It's getting frustrating.

Phew, finally fucking finished mine. I more or less followed the rules we observe for the normal end-of-year voting, with two exceptions--Morbid Tales wasn't originally released as a full-length and Apocalyptic Raids is an EP, but there's no way I could omit them. Some of the early 80s years are a bit skimpy because I simply don't have enough music from back then (which surprised me as I was making the list), and some later years (e.g. 2005) are fairly low-quality on their bottom half due to a lack of great albums from that year. A lot of the years have 'honorable mentions' because I was too much of a pussy to cut it down to 10. Anyway, enough beer-induced blathering, here's my list:

a) Hard Rock/Heavy Metal rule #4080: If "Point Of Entry" is near your top ten, then you DESPERATELY need Van Halen's "Fair Warning". Well, everybody needs it, but in this particular case you need to drop whatever
post-rock-punk-death-black-prog-flamingamazon-punk-man-running-while-masturbating nonsense you plan on studying for the greater good of music and get Unchained, go on down to Mean Street, do the Sinner's Swing, and take home some Dirty Movies.
Oh yea, and "No Sleep Til Hammersmith."
b) Hmmm, I never thought about it that way. I always thought Piece Of Mind was overrated as fuck, and I have yet to hear all of Holy Diver.:hmm:
c) If The Apocalyptic Raids EP is on there, there is no reason why "Haunting The Chapel" shouldn't be.
d) ennnnnh...
e) MOTHERFUCKING KEEPER OF THE SEVEN KEYS!
f) I think I've found a good replacement for my Thrash Metal Playlist after my Sepultura burnout!
g) FTMFW!
h) Damn, 1999 must have been a pretty shitty year for that to happen
i)
j) Mastodon got 0wned.:D Hey, wait a minute, WHERE'S INFERNO!

Yeah, 1981 was one of those years I had to pad. Basically 6-10 were just added to fill the slots (although each of those albums has something to offer in their own right). And I didn't do any live albums.
c) If The Apocalyptic Raids EP is on there, there is no reason why "Haunting The Chapel" shouldn't be.
Apocalyptic Raids warranted me breaking the rules, Haunting the Chapel not so much. It would've landed on my honorables for '84.
d) ennnnnh...
What? Not happy that Reign beat Darkness Descends?
e) MOTHERFUCKING KEEPER OF THE SEVEN KEYS!
Meh. I considered it and it almost made it onto my honorables (I'm guessing you're talking about Pt. 2 since you quoted 1988), but '88 was just too much of a loaded year.
f) I think I've found a good replacement for my Thrash Metal Playlist after my Sepultura burnout!
Agent Orange? Yeah, it's a great fucking record.
g) FTMFW!
I don't get it
h) Damn, 1999 must have been a pretty shitty year for that to happen
Yes, RHCP could be considered padding, but Californication is really not a bad record.
i)
Fucking one of the coolest bands ever. Absolutely psychotic alcoholic hyperspeed NWOBHM/blackened thrash from Japan with titles like "Bitch! We Gonna Kill You," "Violence, Kill, and Destruction," and "We're the Pussy Hunter" (which features a hilarious 1000 MPH Deep Purple-style keyboard solo)
j) Mastodon got 0wned.:D Hey, wait a minute, WHERE'S INFERNO!
Yeah uh, I was kind of conflicted about Inferno. I'm actually not sure I've ever listened to it. I think I heard it once at some point, but I really don't remember, so I couldn't justify putting it on my list :eyes:

Or Peace Sells, or Somewhere In Time. IMO, Reign In Blood will always be the most overrated Slayer album ever. I mean, yea its ok, but I think the only reason its so legendary (aside from tapping the Nazi's for shock value) is its amazing production. But if Hell Awaits had sounded that good (or if Reign had HA's production for that matter), NOBODY would be talking about it today.
I don't get it
F.or T.he M.otherF.ucking W.in. I know, very lame

Something along the way turned the Chili Peppers into absolute nancy boys. Practically every song on their albums nowadays seems to be a ballad. I mean does Anthony even rap on the songs anymore (yes I know he raps on Around The World, which is the obvious highlight of that album)? I'll stick to my "Get Up & Jump's" and "Fight Like A Brave's" thank you very much.

I disagree. I think the whole "RIB is overrated" argument is just and has always been a largely unfounded reaction against its immense, universal praise. I'd be lying if I said I didn't rank it among the best Metal albums ever recorded.

Well, part of the problem is when I finally got around to hearing it I had already soaked in Angel Of Death and Raining Blood. I figured shit, if it was top 3 heavy metal material/ the rest of the album should knock those two flat on their backs, right? (it worked for Van Halen's first album and I heard about half of it) Wrong. I was quite underwhelmed by the rest of it. I mean it has its moments, but I'd much rather listen to The Antichrist instead of say, Piece By Piece.
Show No Mercy is at least 3x better than any other Slayer album.

Agreed. No album containing "Quest For Fire", "Sun And Steel" and "To Tame a Land" can ever possibly be considered a great record. It's an average record with some great songs. That doesn't make it a great record.

It's because the No Prayer tracks aren't horrifically overplayed. I'm so bored of tracks from Piece and Powerslave that appear on every live album, every best of CD, every DVD...
Not to mention Back In The Village, Flash of The Blade and Duelists are all rubbish. Not as bad as Quest For Fire, which is the worst IM song ever, but crap all the same.
Tell you what though, at least I have an opinion that's mine, as opposed to someone elses. Fanboys ;)

Meh, worst Maiden album is Fear of the Dark hands down. Sure its got a couple good tracks and the title song is worth the album alone, but the middle has that "filler material" feeling to it.
be quick or be dead - solid fast song
from here to eternity - its ok
afraid to shoot strangers - good song, but the first half is useless
fear is the key - now the crap starts
childhoods end - "what the hell is going on?"
wasting love - i think ive only listened to this all the way through one time
the fugitive - more like "the prisoner" reloaded
chains of misery - weak
the apparition - weaker
judas be my guide - finally a good song!
weekend warrior - eh not bad, just doesnt really fit in
fear of the dark - epic
Back In The Village = A supercharged "Hot For Teacher"
The Duelists = slightly lengthy, but its memorable enough to hum along too.
Flash Of The Blade = The weakest track on Powerslave in my opinion, but it doesn't warrant skipping.
Powerslave > Piece Of Mind

While I will not deny the Iron Maiden fanboy tag, I can assure you that my opinions are my own. Powerslave was the first Maiden release that I bought back in the day and to this day it is still my favorite. And Flash Of The Blade is still one of my favorite Maiden songs. I always thought rule #4080 of "Maiden fanboydom" was hate every Maiden song that hasn't been played live (which incidentally is about half of Powerslave). That's the only reason I could think of people hating Gangland and Back In The Village.

No. My top 3 are Caught, Powerslave, and 7th Son (no order, they continue to fight for first place to this day), and the last two I just picked off the top of my head.

Well for starters, all of the top 3 or 4 albums can be played all the way through without skipping (thank God for no Joey solo). Piece Of Mind and Kill 'Em All both require skipping once, but Kill 'Em All has more of a crunch to it.
Besides, Piece of Mind is the most overrated "classic" Maiden album. It also hasn't aged well by the fact that Maiden never bring out anything other than "The Trooper" for a tour except for nostalgia tours.
Also, I'm not 100% sure about 80' and 88'. That may have to do with with me being in a Van Halen/Kai Hansen fix right now, as well as being somewhat bored with those albums.

I'd have to admit Back in the Village would be my second favourite song on Powerslave behind the titanic Aces High. However, it isn't because of the AWFUL chorus. They seriously couldn't think of anything better?

Cool thread. I'm late to the party but here are my off the top of me head comments.
1) I LOVE Sun and Steel and Flash of the Blade. Sing-a-long songs that aren't too cheesy and repetative like Fear of the Dark. Conicidentally the most overrated Maiden song ever penned in my opinion. Seriously read those lyrics and tell me they don't sound like a 4th grade poem. Watching a live clip of that song is actually painfuil to me. Bruce takes the cheese level to 10 every time.
2) Somewhere in Time has to be the most overrated Maiden album ever. A MONUMENTAL let down from Powerslave to me. Chock full of filler and boring drawn out songs. It's their Turbo and came out the same year when bands were trying to mix up their sound and become more commercial. Epic fail!
3) Props for all the Vio-Lence and Dark Angel love. Now we seriously need to have a Sadus 101 class. Sadus are by far the most underrated band I've ever heard. They get no respect but Swallowed in Black is still to this day one of the 10 best albums I'v ever heard.
4) I can't believe how many people jump on the hatred of Reign in Blood bandwagon. Altar of Sacrifice and Jesus Saves are incredible and as a whole it's still the best album I've ever heard. Factor in when it came out 1986 when Priest was doing Turbo and bands were going commercial, that album was the biggest FUCK YOU that has ever been made. Uno and probably always will be...

I disagree completely. To say it's overrated would be ignoring the fact that the only songs they care to play from it anymore are Wasted Years (One of Adrian's best riffs, and even it's not played all that much) and Heaven Can Wait. And that's a shame, because it starts and ends with two of the best songs Maiden ever wrote, not to mention the rest of them (Sea of Madness, Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Deja Vu) are woefully overlooked. There are many adjectives to describe Somewhere In Time....overrated isn't one of them. Not even close.

And it's easily one of my top 5 albums ever made.

Somewhere in Time is the most underrated "classic" Maiden album by far. it never gets recognition. Stranger in a Strange Land is one of the best Maiden songs ever imo.
The only flaw with SIT is that "Lonliness" is a minute too long. If they cut it down to five minutes the album would be perfect (though it still wouldn't quite be their best).
