Damn this is way too hard.

Yeah, it's hard to break great shows down to the single song level.

And even though Nick already mentioned it, the first thing that comes to mind is Revelations from the Early Days tour.

For me, I didn't pick those songs because they were performed flawlessly or anything, but because they mean something to me, were surprises in the setlist, or are just songs that translate brilliantly to to a live setting. For example, there's nothing like dozens of people piling on top of each other against the stage, pumping their fists and screaming the words to "Cliche Guevara" at the top of their lungs or Bruce belting out that last line of HBTN.

That's a fair point. It's hardly a rarely played song. Didn't they play it on pretty much every date of the reunited tour?

And of course the Fuel For Life tour. It's on the Electric Eye DVD, for starters.

And they played it all the time with Ripper. BRING BACK RIPPER!

Dio- The eyes, a pretty sub par song, but it had great crowd interaction and he held up the poster me and md888 made out of a bed sheet before hand

G'n'R- Welcome to the jungle, after an insanely long wait between groups and the knowledge that Axl straight up hasn't showed up to shows before, this song was a mind blower as the opener

Matisyahu- Refuge, plain dope with a beat box break down in the middle

Slightly Stoopid- Sensimilla, saw'em again a few days ago and this track stood out for the amazing crowd sing a long

Slayer- Seasons in the Abyss, sick song with a sick video montage set up in the background

Can't believe I haven't done this thread yet.

#1 always and forever: Skeletonwitch - Within My Blood (02/11/08)
They came out into the crowd and we moshed around them. This song made me fall in love with the band.

Celtic Frost - Procreation Of The Wicked (10/16/06)
They slowed it down and doomed it up and it was mind-crushingly heavy.

Slayer - Angel Of Death (02/03/07)
I think everyone remembers their first "Angel of Death" ;)

Dark Funeral - Open The Gates
&
Naglfar - As The Twilight Gave Birth To The Night (both 10/21/07)
The crowd interaction with Dark Funeral was awesome and Naglfar just plays excellent black metal live.

Behemoth - Chant for Eschaton 2000 (11/03/07)
Best ending to a concert. EVER.

Hate Eternal - Catacombs (02/08/08)
One of the first death metal songs I ever heard, LIVE!

The Flaming Lips - Race For The Prize (06/05/08)
Still the funnest concert I've ever been to.

Boris - Rainbow (07/23/08)
Michio Kurihara needs to permanently join Boris.

Obituary - Dethrone the Emperor (10/01/08)
Nothing like seeing one of my favorite death metal bands cover one of my favorite metal bands of all time. ;)

Suicidal Tendencies - You Can't Bring Me Down (11/29/08)
The greatest opening to a concert. EVER.

Ben Folds - Boxing (05/30/09)
One of the greatest Ben Folds Five songs of all time. Never thought I'd hear it live.

Testament - Disciples Of The Watch (06/06/09)
OBEY! :horns:

This was definitely one of my favorite concert moments when I saw them, too. Helloween and Gamma Ray together was one of the best overall band packages I've ever seen. I just love being in a crowd that knows the words and can sing them in tune. someday I'd like to be in a Maiden crowd to hear fear of the dark sung like that. It sounds amazing on a live album, I can only imagine what its like standing in the crowd, or hell on stage hearing 70 thousand people sing that song.

there were so many moments I don't even think I thought of half of them, but when an entire set is good its hard to pick out the best ones.

DethMaiden
07-14-2009, 12:38 PM
Alright, here's me trying to do this after attending many, many shows and seeing more songs than I can count. I'll be keeping it reasonable for the sake of brevity:

Queensryche- Eyes of a Stranger- Saw this twice on two different Operation: Mindcrime themed tours and Geoff in the makeshift straight jacket singing this with such Shakespearean agony was too fucking much.
Kenoma- 1913- I've seen them do this song three times now (and hopefully a fourth next month when I see them play with Giant Squid) and it is the most passion-filled, emotional instrumental I can think of. The first time they did it a thunderstorm was going on behind them and was visible through a window, the second time it was at the best show I've ever been to in Troy's defunct basement venue, and the third time I shot a video for it.
Opeth- Deliverance- They've done it three of the five times I've seen them and despite the fact that it made me long for Martin Lopez to be back in the band, that off-kilter outro is mindblowing to see performed live.
Mastodon- Blood and Thunder- Both times. Never have I been more sure my vocal cords wouldn't work than after screaming every fucking word of this song at the top of my lungs (which I split with blood and thunder when I saw the white whale, mind you). Fuck yes.
Clutch- Burning Beard, Spacegrass, Animal Farm- Burning Beard three times, Spacegrass and Animal Farm just once apiece. Two of the Burning Beard performances were as set openers, and it is the best set opener I've ever seen by any band. Spacegrass was an incredible surprise and expanded the crowd's collective mind (and opened its collective dimebags), and Animal Farm was a fast, furious set closer that rivals Blood and Thunder for its destruction of my vocal cords.
Heaven and Hell- Heaven and Hell- Both times, but moreso from the headlining show where I was front row than the Metal Masters show where I was back row. I do think that the extended version they play live could stand to have some fat shaved off, but to hear that riff and those lyrics and watch Tony Iommi and Ronnie James Dio stand up there, legends as they are, is impossible not to love.
Porcupine Tree- Anesthetize- I didn't honestly think they'd play the full song fighting against venue curfew, but all seventeen-plus minutes of this modern prog masterpiece were unbelievable and moving and the footage they went with for the onstage screen was brilliantly chosen. Ask Eric, he was there. ;)
Iron Maiden- Aces High, Hallowed Be Thy Name- Both times I saw them they played both of these (same tour, duh) and they make the best one-two punch of set opener and encore closer ever. They are both just as amazing as they are on those classic records and Hallowed made me cry a tear or two, it was so fucking beautiful. Best song ever, no joke. :light: Note- Everything else they played was just as good. :D
Flogging Molly- The Seven Deadly Sins- As a general rule, I don't mosh. I think it's kind of lame and annoying. But during this song, I raged in an adrenaline-fueled rampage around the pit (which was more br00tal than any metal pit I've ever seen, by the way). If it's even possible, I think they played it faster than on record. Such a good song, and a great concert moment for me personally.
Judas Priest- Painkiller, Hell Patrol, Between the Hammer and the Anvil- They did three of my favorite songs from their best album and totally maintained the awesomeness and swagger from 1990, even playing them as fast as before. Halford managed to hit 90% of the notes without dropping his voice from the recordings too. True metal heaven.
Carcass- Keep on Rotting in the Free World- Huh? They had all those awesome, groundbreaking albums that defined their respective genres (goregrind, tech death, and melodic death metal, I'm looking at you), why would you pick the lone song they played off of their "commercial" record? Because Jeff Walker made it the best song of the night. He hilariously introduced it as "cock rock" and Ken Owen's fill-in added cowbell to the intro. Also, that groove is too fucking fat. This was the highlight of a consistently excellent set by the greatest death metal band of all time.

This is leaving out so much but it already feels exhaustive. So yeah, those are my top sixteen I guess. :rocker:

The song absolutely blew me away. Bruce sounded like it was 1982 all over again and the atmosphere was electric. During the chorus they threw on the houselights and it was amazing to look around and see fists raised throughout every part of the arena. I started tearing up in the beginning and by "He's walking like a dead man..." I was sobbing. Bring on the '10 tour:rocker:.

This is besides the fact that Maiden have three guitars to spare for rhythm.

You do realize that a double neck has 12-strings on the one neck, right? Thus giving it a sound and use that a standard 6-string guitar cannot accomplish. So for a song like Children of the Damned, H can use the 12-string neck for the acoustic-ish verses, but then use the 6-string neck for the lead/solo section. Was it necessary? No, not really. But I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Unlike all you youngins on here i've been to way too many shows now to recall specific performances. But if I had to pick something it would be everything Rush has played each of the six times i've seen them live. They really are about as flawless as you can get on stage.

Meshuggah- Bleed, Sickening
Decapitated - Spheres of Madness
Nile- Kafir! (the crowd participation for this was awesome)
Rage Against The Machine- No Shelter
Tool - Flood
Behemoth - Ov Fire and The Void
Vader - Xeper
Opeth - I would say the whole fucking set from HOB Boston in May 09, but ill narrow it down to:
Closure- The Hendrix jam at the end gave me full body high
Deliverance - Best encore I've ever seen them do.

All of these are recent as fuck with the exception of RATM and Tool.

I was thinking about this today -

Iron Maiden - Dream of Mirrors 08/12/00
Iron Maiden - Ghost of the Navigator 08/12/00
Iron Maiden - Blood Brothers 08/12/00
Iron Maiden - Brave New World 08/12/00
Iron Maiden - The Wickerman 08/12/00

Front Row and Center, Brave New World Tour!
Opening Acts - Halford and Queensryche.

I was asked before the show to be one of the girls at the end inside the Wickerman, but I didn't want to give up my front row seat. :D

Bruce got really pissed off at someone and starting cursing and threw his towel. I caught (and still have somewhere) said towel.

Best Maiden show EVER! :rocker:

(But you should have done the Wickerman thing. Talk about a once in a lifetime opportunity! On stage with Maiden in the Wickerman. That would have been so cool.)

The part I bolded is why I love you, haha. Unlike most girls at a metal show you'd rather keep your awesome spot and see the show rather than dance around on stage. Well done. Would've been a cool thing to say you did, but NOTHING compares with Maiden from the rail. :fist:

Yeah, they tend to downplay V material anymore. I also saw Egypt/The Death of Blance, but like Communion - just once. Evolution I managed twice. I hope they bring something back (preferably Communion) as a regular on the next tour. "Fallen" would be cool, they haven't done that in a long time.

I saw them on that tour as well. It was truely awesome:rocker: With it being Bruce's big comeback tour with them, the vibe for the show was really in another world. Everyone knew they were seeing something special that night.

I can't believe you turned down an offer to be in The Wickerman:eek: Was it gonna be for the whole show or just for a certian song? I can't recall if there were girls in it the whole show or not when I saw them.

yeah it's a shame because V is probably one of their best albums. i've seen Egypt once also, but have yet to see Communion and Evolution. i'd love to see Accolade I and II, Wicked, Out of the Ashes, and Eyes of Medusa. not sure if i've ever seen any of them on a setlist.

The last time Medusa was played was 2001, but the other ones you mentioned were all done on The Odyssey tour 2002-2003, and Wicked was done on Gigantour in 2005. None since. The Accolade I and II are probably the SX songs I want to see the most.

Maybe if I had a lawn seat or something, but no way I was giving up front row and center. I also took a ton of pictures, caught 3 guitar picks and a drumstick that night, not to mention that towel from Bruce. haha

What you said, in bold, just all the more reasons to not do the Wickerman thing, and give all that up? From what I could tell, the girls were just in the Wickerman at the end, during the song Iron Maiden. Then Bruce walked up there at the very end, opened the hatch and they were all groping his legs. Very similar, if not identical to the Rio DVD. The details were sketchy, but I recall being told I would miss the show, or atleast a significant portion of it, so while I was flattered to be asked, no way I was gonna do it!

I didn't realize you would miss that much of the show. I thought they would at least let you watch from the side of the stage or something until it was time to come out. You deffinately made the right decision:rocker:
