You know, as much as I love even new thrash, does the whole "scene" piss you off sometimes? These thrasher kids who think they're big shit because they know all the old-school bands and dress in the thrash uniform (tight jeans, reebok hightops, patch vest, Mike Muir-style hat, etc.) and talk about how much POSERZ SUCKSZ LOL really get on my nerves sometimes.

The scene doesn't really affect me too much, as really it's not around these parts save for a couple people, including the guy I jam with sometimes. It's definitely growing though, lots more thrash bands popping up and I think that's great. But yeah those guys do fit the description and are pretty bent on staying true or whatever. I haven't encountered too many though so its really a non-factor as far as I'm concerned. Plus, I mean if they really like it and believe in it (which they seem to be pretty dedicated) I mean I don't see anything wrong with that. It's a scene, either you like it or not. And I think it's much more noble cuz these are people actually into the music and the lifestyle, you have to do your research and know your shit if you're staying up all night bidding on an Exumer patch off Ebay (which is what my friend did one night and he lost  ). It's being a part of something pure that they can identify themselves with, something outside the metal stereotype of baggy jeans and Machine Head shirts. I don't ascribe to it myself but I definitely don't condemn it.

Never saw that.......?
Basically I see it as a statement against the perceived "mainstreaming" of metal these days. Metal ought to be counter-cultural anyways as far as I see it, and the lifestyle/fashion/etc. of the old school thrash metal kind of defines that I think.
Never saw that.......?
I've showed it to a couple of people on AIM. I'll post it here sometime.

I guess. I think at this point I've grown out of the culture and I just don't care about it anymore, I'm only concerned about the music these days.

You know what? Why the hell not?
"wow, I fucking hate heavy metal
not the music, mind you - the music is great. The culture that goes along with it. It (especially the "metal-rules.com" subfaction thereof) turned me into a stone cold goddamn killer, and no I don't like it one bit.
I don't like Testament. I do like Overkill. Can I call benefit-of-the-doubt or some other rhetorical device here, so I don't have to dissect every goddamn riff to explain why?
I sure as Hell don't like Metallica.
I hate the fact that I am being forced to come up with more and more over-the-top justifications of my opinions... I've been reduced to a salivating canine that has some sort of primal need to say bad things about fucken Metallica every time I read about them, and obviously that just generates more shit from people. Yeah, I do feel bad. Would you be surprised? I feel bad that I've been reduced to a slobbering idiot that's been forced to either tuck his tail between his legs and run for the border, or start sucking troll cock. Neither is particularly healthy for my dignity.
You've read my "world-famous" review of Master of Puppets. I believe every word of that - I just didn't think it would ever come to the point where I would have to detail it in such a rigourous manner. The worst is, I have gotten *very little* intelligent criticism of that. A lot of "duuh, I agree, you're a visionary" from a bunch of clones, and "duuh, you're an idiot, Metallica are gods" from an equally cloned contingent. Couldn't we just have stopped at "I don't feel the need to listen to that album", without being smashed in the face enough times that I built up a resistance? Do I need to have a mathematically sound reason for *everything* I do!? I can't possibly maintain that standard. The cracks are showing - every once in a while the trolls come out.
As I said, I hate the goddamn metal scene. I know what I like. I wish to Hell it would be sufficient if I could just claim "I like it", and not have to pull teeth to explain WHY, to a predeterminedly hostile audience? That's all there is - just two sets of thoughts. a) let us list every popular album in the history of metal, throw in a few obscure ones, and yell "yeah dude that's a CLASSIC!!!" as a refrain? (Hm, sounds like a Regurgitated Cow Fetus song!) or b) start comparing Band X to Band Y, and deride the fan of the 'wrong' band as being a poseur.
Scenario a is necessarily terminating; after a while you run out of albums, so you degenerate to b if you're not careful. Because no one is going to like *every* metal album. That's not just a corollary of the "duuh, metal is about rebellion, man, don't accept everything!" stereotype - it's actually the truth. From that point on, it's all hate, all the time. And bringing 'reason' into it is apparently not the answer.
So I would say 'fuck the metal scene', except even that has been reduced to a cliche, as is basically *every* point of view, legitimate or otherwise, when you have a reactionary system, which is basically all the metal scene is.
I don't give a fuck about reactionary - I just like the riffs. Fuck you."
There's part 1...
...and here's part 2.
"Fuck Manowar, and fuck religion.
And fuck those that think metal is a "chosen way of life". All it does is breed corruption and hatred. Metal, when taken from this perspective, is absolutely and completely identical to that other fool's masquerade: organised religion.
Metal is elitism. Unfortunately, I am realising more and more that it is an arbitrary elitism. Christianity says that you must worship Jesus. Metal says that you must worship old Metallica. And don't let that "grah! independent thought!" shit fool you - metal culture is all about conformity.
Seriously - I can't think of why basically every thrasher seems to enjoy the song "Orion". It doesn't make any linear sense, because it's nowhere near a thrash staple. If a band like RATT came up with it, you can be sure they'd be labelled as even worse "poseurs". But because it's Metallica, I'm supposed to worship it because that makes me thrash? It's almost as inexplicable as all thrashers suddenly declaring that Donna Summer was to be exalted.
Same with Testament (known more for their blazing leads than anything else)... same with a bunch of other "sacred cows". And of course, people will not justify the evangelism of their opinion... "wait, what's so good about Jesus?" "He died for our sins! If you don't like him, you're going to Hell!" "What's so good about The New Order?" "It rules, man!! If you don't like it, you're a poseur!"
Sound a little familiar?
Yeah, I definitely fell into the metal deathtrap. It all started when I first hit college, which gave me a few basic freedoms: constant internet, unfettered by parental control. So at some point I hit upon my first heavy metal discussion forum (metal-rules.com), where I discovered that there were more than about 16 metal bands out there. Quickly I discovered bands I liked (Sodom, for example), and bands I didn't like quite so much (In Flames comes to mind). And it was a generally peaceable time, because the forum had about 20 regulars and the occasional slop, which basically came in with a "yea dude metal rullzzzz, yo yo yo word to ma homeyz!!!", tested for echo, found none, and slunk away.
Then along came the popular tyranny... the slop turned to white noise and got louder and louder, and suddenly the whole thing wasn't as much "hey, behold this kinda obscure album that rules" (thanks, EvilRocker, for sending me that Griffin CD in Dec '99! Seriously, I still got that shit!) to "let's name the top 10 thrash albums."
Then, the week after, "let's name the top 10 thrash albums AGAIN". And this is where the whole thing hit parody stage, and if I had had any self-respect, I should've bailed out right then and there. But no, again this was barely into my "holy shit! I am permitted independent thought! (except on weekends, when I have to go home and die)" stage of my life. So here was a glimmer of hope... I had moved up from "never, ever, ever be allowed to be correct, by imperial edict" to "hey if I play my cards right, I can be *correct*. I can WIN." Holy lord, what a revelation.
And, more importantly, for once, I belonged. That's what all cults do - they make the member feel like they belong, and only then do they bring out the Kool Aid and only then do they slowly but surely turn the knob to 11, and watch the ideas get more and more ridiculous. Metal is full of ridiculous ideas and contradictions - anything from an anti-popular notion (if more than 2 people like it, it's bad), contrasted with the Unquestionable Classics, which certainly more than 2 people like, but are not bad. Why? Because that's how it's written. That's how it's done. Meanwhile, everyone's expected to hate one sacred-cow band. In fact, every behaviour has already been predicted - by this stage in the game, everyone is a self-parody.
And I got good at my own little niche, which was thrash, and riffage. I understood riffage. I did not understand anything else musically, but I could point to riff #17 in song #61 and claim that it was a good one, and you could just go and listen, and understand. I liked more than just riffs, but I could not explain why Fates Warning's second album affected me so, while I could sure tell you how face-ripping and penis-mutilating that such-and-such Exodus song was. So I just went with the one functional policy. Instant winnar. And I got high on the Absolute Power... and it soon degenerated into extremism and hate.
Within a few months, I went from "your opinion is instantly invalid" (parental subjugation) to "your opinion is valid if you can rape the enemy and force it down his throat" (revenge). I had thought that all problems were just a matter of insufficient brains, and insufficient effort - both of which would be rectified in due time. I had conveniently bypassed - and had never even considered the existence of - "you have the right to your own opinions". I had never considered that to be self evident... the pursuit of happiness, what the fuck does that have to do with me?
I never got good at answering the Hard Questions... the impossible questions, as things would turn out. I had only one simple plan... one small strategy that covered not only a small subsection of the world as a whole, but even a moderately small subsection of what I liked. I could go on for hours about why Overkill's riff #45 in song #12 was so much better than anything Testament had ever done, but still I could not manage to convince anyone that Overkill were *better*. More brains needed... more brains. That's all I kept thinking - that in time I could rewrite the dogma.
Yeah, good luck with that. Organised religion doesn't quite work that way.
I never really *hated* Testament... or Forbidden, or whatnot. I did not plot their deaths at night while drinking goat's blood. I just never particularly liked them, and never thought that it was sufficient internal conquest to not listen to them. I had to get people to stop talking about them, otherwise the battle for Overkill and Sodom and Dark Angel (the bands I *did* like) would be lost in some manner. Never mind that Overkill and Testament are similar enough that people could actually like - horrors! - both bands!
Hell, I never even hated Metallica... sure, I thought they were assholes. Again, that Puppets review is pretty damn plausible, methinks. I just don't feel nearly as strongly about it as it comes off there... I don't particularly believe Ulrich is the anti-christ. I'm just more sad than anything else that "Orion" begat Opeth, "The Thing that Should not Be" begat Pantera, and the proportion of bands that I enjoy just keeps going down, while the Fundamental List of Metal Correctness keeps getting larger and larger. I was getting forced out - of course I was expected to fight! That is all I knew of.
The 'metal scene' is basically just a breeding ground for trolls, and I unwittingly fell right into the middle of it. I had come off a childhood of extreme flaws and ignorance, and pretty much chose the worst possible next step: I had unwittingly fallen into a place that would cause me to act on my destructive tendencies, reinforce my flawed beliefs, and convince myself that that was the Right Way to Go.
So no, I can't say that I'm a "h00ge fucken metalhead". I don't think I ever quite was. I don't enjoy 85-90% of the bands that are considered "metal". I'd much rather listen to Madonna than Metallica. However, the scene never would support such a belief. There are a precise number of exceptions to be made in the Holy Bible, and - even worse - one does not get away with writing new ones.
I will keep my own time."
Discuss.

The thing is, Metallica have fallen so far from grace that they've probably been usurped by Priest in the "sacred cow" factor. But that's not even the point, the point is if you don't worship at least 10 sacred cow metal bands, you are doomed for mockery, according to the "rules".

Basically, in response to the UltraBoris thing, don't fret about scenes too much or looking cool or whatever cuz that's what metal is not about, aside from the aesthetics the bottom line is the music, and I agree with him when he makes the point of how closed-minded many metal heads (myself included) can get sometimes and I like how he related it to organized religion. In short, just do what you want and don't bother with the extra stuff otherwise you'll end up disillusioned like Boris got. But if you really love the music you probably wouldn't fret about such trivial things anyways, most people would just not really care but it bothered him enough to write it so whatever.
