The only excuse for not picking "Iron Maiden" is if you are a female, or a male who for some reason has no sack, in which case you should probably pick something like British Steel or Drama or something like that :)

I think one other excuse might be that you have actually heard more than 10 albums released in 1980.

The best release of 1980 is quite obviously Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables by Dead Kennedys.

It's not that I'm a fanboy, I just happen to enjoy that one the best. Back In Black, Ace Of Spades, Blizzard Of Ozz, and even British Steel are all great albums. Heaven & Hell is good too, although inconsistent.

I'm personally beginning to find the Sabbath fanboys much more annoying than the Maiden fanboys.

Lady evil, evil... she's a magical mystical woman.

Dude. C'mon.

It has maybe three good songs on it, but none great. The best work on the album -- Die Young, Chicken of the Sea, and the title track -- are all fairly wooden reinterpretations of stuff that had been done before often and better. The spark that animated early Black Sabbath -- the funk and the bite -- was dead and buried by the time Ronnie James arrived.

Dude. I know that song sucks ass.

Let me break it down like this.

Neon Knights: Classic
Children Of The Sea: Classic
Lady Evil: lame "Wanton Song" ripoff
Heaven & Hell: Classic
Wishing Well: Isn't this what Sabbath got shit for on "Never Say Die?"
Die Young: Classic
Lady Evil: Cunting fuck! Do not call a woman handsome!
Lonely Is The Word: Not classic, but still awesome.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Where you see classics, I see metal by numbers -- even as of 1980. By comparison with that album, either Paranoid on one hand or Iron Maiden on the other are so much more dynamic, inventive, and interesting.

Heaven & Hell IMO helped to sow the seeds of classic power metal, but then again, so did Maiden's debut.

Balderdash. I don't care if EVH could play circles around East Bay Ray, it doesn't make Van Halen's music any more interesting.

I fully agree with this statement. Additionally, "Lady Evil" is so ridiculous that I can only hope they were clocked out on 14 different types of drugs. At least then I could understand why they would feel the need to record a song with such cliché, cheesy, and pedestrian lyrics.

I still like the album though :eyes:

I guess it depends on what you mean by "outplay." DK's guitarist couldn't play as fast or as flashy as EVH, sure, but I think Jello's vox stand up to Roth's (hard to compare them though given the wide stylistic variation), and I don't recall hearing anything particularly interesting out of Anthony Michael Hall on bass or Alex on drums (until he tracked over himself 73 times for Hot For Teacher, anyway) -- so for the most part I think DK's chops stand up just fine, even by a very narrow technical definition. When you throw in the element of taste and discernment -- i.e., figuring out the best and most effective thing to play to make the song work -- then DK could very easily win that argument, depending on your point of view.

This might be because of my newfound Van Halen fanboyism, but for me Women & Children First is tied for album of the year with Maiden's debut.

For one thing it has Could This Be Magic, an acoustic song with a fuckload of goofiness, which is something that no punk band would dare attempt.
