9/20 -- Jon Oliva's Pain / Circle II Circle

9/21 -- Nightwish / Sonata Arctica

9/25 -- Helloween / Gamma Ray / Manticora

10/9 -- Kamelot

With Exodus, Soilwork, Death Angel, and Paganfest already under my belt, this should be the best year for concerts I've had.

With Exodus, Soilwork, Death Angel, and Paganfest already under my belt, this should be the best year for concerts I've had.

Considering I've seen:
WASP (doing all of the Crimson Idol)
Maiden
Symphony X

and still have:
Maiden
possibly Judas Priest/Black Sabbath
Nightwish w/ Sonata Arctica
Helloween / Gamma Ray
Rob Rock
Circle II Circe / Jon Oliva's Pain
Kamelot / Edguy

and probably other stuff...

... I think I win.

I've already mentioned that I'm seeing Priest, but now I'm really psyched for it now that I've heard Nostradamus and it sounds pretty damn good! In fact, dare I say, I'm more looking forward to hearing the... new songs live than the all the stuff from the vaults, especially since everything's gonna be slightly downtuned and probably isn't going to sound amazing (though I could be wrong).

I couldn't have less of a clue about how many of these shows I'm actually going to see due to my shitty financial situation, but all prospects considered:

8/02 - Suspyre, Dark Empire, Cypher Seer, Odin's Court - Allentown, PA
8/06 - Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Testament, Motorhead - Camden, NJ
8/29 - Nightwish w/ Sonata Arctica - Philadelphia, PA
9/20 - Chris Caffery - Flushing, NY
9/24 - Iced Earth - Philadelphia, PA
10/15 - Kamelot / Edguy - New York, NY
11/22 - Symphony X - Philadelphia, PA

already crossed Helloween/Gamma Ray off of my list... having seen Gamma Ray headline in 2006 and not really being into much of any Helloween with Deris, it's just not worth the $40 ticket + trip costs to go to NYC.

And god fucking dammit, I will see Circle II Circle and Jon Oliva's Pain if it's the last thing I do. My tentative show of attendance has currently changed 4 times thus far, and still nothing is at all definite. I just CAN'T miss this.

As of right now, September is gonna be busy as fuck for me show-wise. Luckily I can sneak on quite a few of these bands guest lists, or I'd be in the hole financially.

9/13 -- Carcass, Suffocation, Necrophagist, 1349, Aborted

9/14 -- Children Of Bodom, Between The Buried And Me, The Black Dahlia Murder

9/20 -- Jon Oliva's Pain, Circle II Circle

9/21 -- Nightwish, Sonata Arctica

9/25 -- Helloween, Gamma Ray, Manticora

9/28 -- Iced Earth

10/09 -- Kamelot

All that is confirmed now is:

Iced Earth - 9/24
Kamelot/Edguy - 10/15
Symphony X - either 11/21 or 11/22

Unfortunately I've had to come to grips with the fact that I may very well miss the tour of the decade for me. Unfortunately i can't afford to fly to Florida and everywhere within a remotely reasonable drive from here (Brooklyn and Jaxx) are 21+. I'm so rediculously upset.
I've also officially "canceled" any plans I had to see Nightwish/Sonata Arctica and Helloween/Gamma Ray. I hope to still make it to New York to see that Chris Caffery acoustic solo gig on September 20th.

would i love to see ATR drop and widen 36 Crazy Fists' and Gojira's sets? of course. :bliss:

I'm seeing the In Flames, Gojira, and 36 Crazyfists show later tonight. I'm going by myself since it seems like my best friend isn't gonna make it. I'm so pumped to see In Flames, and I don't care how crappy Anders Friden is. Gojira should be really good, I've heard a lot of good things about their live show. I'm listening to them right now so I'll be familiar with their music heading into tonight. As for 36 Crazyfists, I just saw them on the Mayhem Festival back in August & didn't think much of them.

I'm also interested to see if both In Flames & Gojira will play longer sets since All That Remains pulled off the tour.

And I just decided fuck TSO, I've seen the show twice and adding Believe isn't worth my $35 and the hassle of getting there.

But in March Dropkick Murphys are coming to Indianapolis, and if seeing them live is one-tenth as fun as seeing Flogging Molly live, it'll be worth whatever it costs.

Why the fuck are you such an ass?

Evergrey have been one of my absolute favorite bands for several years now, I have never seen them, and the odds of me ever getting the chance to see them headline anywhere close to me aren't particularly high. This is a one-off intimate warm-up show at a club that holds only 300 people, and the band has stated that they will hang out for a few hours after the show to meet and party with the fans.

Oh, wow, you're going to that? Nice. I was really thinking about it, but can't pull it off, not if I want to do Maryland Deathfest and ProgPower both this year. But I can see where you're coming from - I'd take a plane to Europe just to see a Morgana Lefay headlining show if I ever got the chance. I went to ProgPower for Pagan's Mind and After Forever in 2007 - every other band was just lucky additions, those two were WHY I was there.

These are the shows I'm looking at, don't know how many I'll actually make it to:

For me sometimes it's less about just how much I like the band and more about the rarity of the show itself. Maiden are my favorite band, but I will never have to go extreme lengths for them. I've seen them 4 times and never had to travel further than 2 hours for a show, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't, I just don't have to. There are bands like Nocturnal Rites who are, at best, my 6th or 7th favorite band, but I would go almost anywhere in America to see them, because I want to see them that badly and will likely only ever have one or two remote chances to make it happen. Evergrey are like my 5th favorite band, but this show is a special intimate warm-up show. I won't get many chances to ever see them headline here in America in general. Not to mention that the band is going to be hanging out for several hours after the gig, and I would really like to meet Tom S. Englund. I really enjoy road trips for any reason, and I can fortunately get the money together to make this happen, and at a price that I feel is well worth it.

I feel like an appropriate response would involve the word "asymptote", but I honestly don't remember enough algebra to say why.

Long story short, I'd love to see Maiden 100 times, but if three is what ends up happening, I'm just grateful I saw them that much.

10.4. HammerFall / Sabaton / Bloodbound
18.4. Evergrey
13.5. Glenn Hughes
21.5. Circle II Circle / Manticora / Burning Circle

Fantastic.

I wasn't aware Bloodbound were even still active, let alone touring. The two albums are definitely enjoyable listens.
Evergrey are amazing, I'm going 800 miles to see them in 3 weeks.
Glenn Hughes is a vocal phenom. Not that into his solo stuff, but the guy has an unparalleled voice.
Circle II Circle are great, Zak sounds amazing live, and the Manticora guys are tons of fun.

It's not difficult when you go to every show that's not awful. I could go to a show a week all year long if I wanted to throw money away seeing mediocre bands I don't like, just because it's something to do.
I just can't imagine how you have that kind of money to throw around to go to that many shows.

I do have a friend who gets on a lot of guest lists, but he said it's nearly impossible to get on one for a 21+ show.

I'm talking to a guy who promotes a lot of shows, and he said that basically if I show up to the venue with a ticket, they'll pretty much let me in.

Ah. I was basing that off of the fact that when I saw Jon Oliva's Pain in New York Jon's manager put me on the guest list. It was a 21+ show and I'm only 18, and they didn't ask for ID or anything, just gave me a wristband and let me in.

Lazarus A.D. on 2/28 in Kenosha, WI. They opened up for Testament in Milwaukee last year on August 1st (I drank with Testament afterwards). They had recently gotten signed to Metal Blade, and this is a CD release party that's being held in, of all places, an elementary school.

Moshing in a grade school gymnasium. How bizarre.

I picked up a copy of their album The Onslaught (indie release) at the Testament show, and it's solid thrash/groove metal. It was mixed by James Murphy.

When James Murphy takes notice of you right when you start, you know you've done something.

The Onslaught will be released commercially on 3/3.

There was a presale for No Doubt today for Citi credit card holders. turns out Tix are $80 per head. I'll likely check out ticket prices for when they go on sale for the general public, but i am not expecting much difference.

Needless the say, neither the wife nor i want to see No Doubt that much.

upcoming:
3/29 - Tyr and co.

still to acquire:
4/25 Amon Amarth - which has become a mission from hell. I used to be able to go to my local FYE to buy tix for this venue (webster theater, Hartford, CT) and suddenly no more. Now, it seems this venue is exclusive through tickets.com and the outlets that i have thus far approached have yielded no tickets. all this trouble to pay less fees and shit. next is the venue's box office itself, which has to wait until next monday b/c they changed my werk schedule.

Contemplating:
5/3 Gwar
5/4 Paganfest
5/9 Mastodon
5/10 Mastodon
6/20 No Doubt
8/8 Mayhem fest

And tomorrow is the drive to the venue for Amon Amarth tickets. all the driving i've done so far has prob'ly gone way passed the $10 in fees if i were to buy the ticket online, but when the fee was half that at my local FYE (but suddenly no more), i feel justified in going out of my way to try acquire said ticket without said fee.

3/25/09 - Converge, Coliseum, Ceremony, Rise & Fall, Pulling Teeth @ Grog Shop
4/15/09 - Exodus / Kreator / Belphegor / Warbringer / Epicurean @ Peabody's
4/21/09 - Amon Amarth / Goatwhore / Skeletonwitch / Lazarus A.D. @ Peabody’s
4/24/09 - If These Trees Could Talk / Gifts From Enola @ Annabelle’s (Akron / Canton)
4/25/09 - Pelican (guests TBA) @ 3 Floyds Brewing Co. – Munster, Indiana
4/25/05 - Russian Circles / Sweet Cobra / Lichens @ Grog Shop (RC is rumored to be debuting material from their new album!)
4/26/09 - Brutal Truth / Soulless (Cleveland thrashers) / other guests TBA @ Peabody’s
5/2/09 - Mastodon / IntrOnaut / Kylesa @ Beachland Ballroom :rocker:
5/4/09 - Gojira / Car Bomb / The Chariot @ Peabody’s
5/13/09 - Big Business / Tweak Bird / Keelhaul @ Grog Shop
5/14/09 - Napalm Death / Kataklysm / Toxic Holocaust / Trap Them / Coliseum @ Peabody’s
May 22-24 - MD Death Fest: Bolt Thrower, Pestilence, Asphyx, Atheist, Pig Destroyer, Brutal Truth, Napalm Death, Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation… (<-in my dreams...)
6/12/09 - Mayhem / Marduk / Cephalic Carnage / Cattle Decapitation / Withered @ Peabody’s
July 31, 2009 - Rockstar Energy Mayhem Fest (at Blossom!): Slayer, Marilyn Manson, Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Job for a Cowboy, others

I am married with children (one with two legs, two with four), and as you can see, I only get a "hall pass" about once a month.

Pretty much. Actually, the ones I probably won't end up going to are the 21+ ones (Anal Cunt, Bone Awl, Pro-Pain, Abigail Williams) but I have them there because there's still a chance I'll just stand outside and watch 'em (like I did with Exodus).

Oh, and Quo Vadis is in Maryland.

After 6 shows in 5 weeks (tha's an average of 1.2 shows/wk!), i've been wondering if it's just my age showing and the lack of youthful energy just has me spent or if i have finally captured whatever i missed out on in my youth.

I know i am not so turned off because i am still listening to various internet metal stations (gratuitous plug: metalmessiahradio.com (http://metalmessiahradio.com)), but the question is do i still go to shows?
or should i just be more critical with my choices?

E.g., Testament with Lazarus AD and Unearth at the end of May can be on the table, but i feel like i won't be missing much if i don't go. Then there is the Mayhem Festival with Slayer headlining and it would be interesting to see Marilyn Manson et al, but it's almost like a talking point. like having the ability to say "oh i saw them at Mayhem this summer" should it come up.

as it stands, a double shot of Priest since they are doing all of British Steel seems worth while if a little pricey.

i guess i am still meditating on it.

other than my age, i have crohn's disease, and that can be very energy draining as well.
