I IV V and 4/4 would like to have a word with you.

No idea what the fuck that means.

No idea what the fuck that means.

Music Theory stuff.

The no-brainer part is that 4/4 = time signature. Hard to find pop songs that aren't written entirely in this time signature, except for those in 3/4.

For the rest, this is the most I can dumb it down:
The roman numerals represent all 7 chords in a key. From the 7 notes in a scale (for the sake of simplicity, C: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C), you can build simple triads (3-note chords) based on each note. The notes in each triad are based off of intervals (whole other story). In the key of C, a C chord is C-E-G, otherwise known as I. The roman numerals represent the number each note is in the scale. Upper case roman numerals for major chords, lower case roman numerals for minor chords. Each chord also has a name, for example, the chord built off of the C (the root note of the scale) is known as the tonic chord, I. The note on D (D minor, D-F-A) is the supertonic chord, ii. E (E minor is E-G-B) is the mediant, iii. F (F-A-C) is the subdominant, IV. G (G-B-D) is the dominant, V. A (A-C-E) is the submediant, vi, and B (B-D-F) is the leading tone, vii (plus degree symbol I can't find).
Basically pop music is notorious for only ever using the most predictable chord progressions, mainly consisting of simply tonic (I), dominant (V), and subdominant (IV).
Whew. Sometimes I take for granted how difficult it is to attempt to explain stuff I just know.

ChildrenofSodom
03-24-2009, 08:07 PM
Yeah.....So...4/4 and the other stuff is used alot because it is appealing (catchy) to most people's ears, at least superficially?

Maiden33
03-24-2009, 08:10 PM
More or less. Arguably it is appealing to all people's ears. I've heard arguments from people before that it is against human nature to claim that "safe" music is unappealing to their ears. I'm not talking about 3-chord music, but traditional chord progressions and time signatures, common cadences and melodies. People like to feel comfortable and familiar with what they're listening to, which is why pop music is essentially that, pop music. It uses human nature to get the best of people and make simple, catchy music that is hard to not like, unless you have a predisposition to hate all popular or "predictable" music.

Music Theory stuff.

btw I love that all metal does the same exact I IV V progression, except in minor. (replace the I with its relative minor, vi, and hey look what chord progression you have now!).

edit: Props to maiden for throwing in that Fmajor a few times. :D From the classical perspective (aka the metal perspective for all intents and purposes) that makes almost no sense at all, but they make it sound as natural as anything.

edit2: almost no sense at all is an overstatement. It makes perfect sense if you regard the key to be taken from the Phrygian/Mixolydian modes (but even that's a stretch, given the melody's use/implication of that one differing note over the right chords ;) ), but even so those modes are fairly rare in music that uses this sort of foundation outside the realm of...metal (and rap lol).

lastedit: Don't know why I said any of this.

One other thing I find really amusing is the absolute abuse of first inversion secondary dominant chords in 80s metal. If you look at almost any song by Dokken, Dio, Tesla, or so many other bands popular in the mid 80s, they are all over the place.
For example:
if a song is in G, you have so much use of the A major chord in first inversion (C#-A-E), almost always proceeded by a D chord, which makes sense being that A major is the dominant chord in D major.

There's also, for no good reason, a bronze version of Hendrix, and black & white version of Hendrix, the Rush 'Starman' and an insanely overpriced Marshall amp stack:

They are made by a company. Companies like to make money, so they make figures of the rock stars they think they'll sell the most of. Sure, it'd be cool if they made a Mikael Åkerfeldt one, but those wouldn't exactly fly off the shelves (except for the dozen that Brad would buy to put on his nightstand).

Am I not allowed to bitch about that though? I would consider all of these bands 'good', and I particularly like Judas Priest, but I think that putting out one hundred lines of novelties bearing the image of rather serious bands makes rock music, and metal, seem pretty cheap. Yes, Jimi Hendrix was a pioneer of the guitar, yes Ozzy is the 'Prince of Darkness', thank you, we know, can we stop elevating them? It just seems insincere to music as an artform.

I mostly agree, but I personally can't make that argument because I'm a fan of (and have bought hundreds of dollars in merch from) one of the biggest merchandise whores in music.

ChildrenofSodom

It seems that everytime people on here complain about 'band x shoudnt be touring with band y' or 'company A shouldnt put out merchandise for band B', the response it always 'Money rules', as if thats a good excuse. I think the fact that money rules the industry and that bands would lend their image to cheap plastic figurines is anti-metal, if I can follow an idealized opinion of the genre. Those figurines give no indication of what the music sounds like, the live show is like, or who those musicians really are.

Yeah, has an entire collection of Eddies ever been released? One for every form he has taken.

There have been Eddie action figures released from:

Live After Death (http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/yhst-66400482594017_2049_2402705)
Piece of Mind (http://images.play.com/covers/728591x.jpg)
Somewhere In Time (http://sleevage.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/neca_33755_eddiesomehereintimeironmaiden18inch.jpg )
Killers (http://z.hubpages.com/u/291825_f260.jpg)
Phantom of The Opera (http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/yhst-66400482594017_2053_783278)
The Trooper (http://www.starstore.com/acatalog/Iron_Maiden_Eddie_2.jpg)

By different companies though. McFarlane Toys did The Trooper and Killers.

NECA did Live After Death, Piece of Mind, Somewhere In Time and Phantom of The Opera (as well as Freddie Mercury, Joey Ramone, Jimmy Page, John Lennon, Brian Johnson, Angus Young and two Kurt Cobains).

Yeah, I'm sick of going to toy stores and seeing aisles full of those damn Keith Emerson action figures.

Yeah, I think Knucklebonz have at least made some effort to be different. I mean, how many companies have done Ted Nugent, Randy Rhoads, Keith Emerson, Tony Iommi, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Tipton and Downing, Zakk Wylde, Buddy Holly and George Lynch?

Then in the action figure lines from various companies there've been Jon Bon Jovi, Johnny Cash, John Lennon, Richie Sambora, all of Motley Crue, all of Metallica, Joey Ramone, Lemmy, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Johnny Rotten, Keith Richard, Mick Jagger, Sid Vicious etc. etc.

There's plenty of variety around, as well as the over-done ones like Slash and Ozzy.

There are even Rush Bobbleheads.

You've only got to buy half a dozen concert shirts to break $100. It's not that strange.
