So, on about Sunday night I believe, a couple of my friends convinced me (with some difficulty) to skip work, make the 7-8 hour drive up to Montreal on a Wednesday to see Moonsorrow, and drive all the way back immediately after the concert. It was an adventure to say the least. My friends (who were coming from just outside Philadelphia) picked me up at about 10 AM, and through hours and hours of beautiful, frozen scenery in New York, we got to Montreal by about 5:30. It was fucking cold. Anyway, the opening bands weren't really worth talking about, and they all spoke in French so I'm not even sure what they were called anyway... the bill had them as Profane Anthem, then Lacrimae Mortalium, and finally Profugus Mortis, who were apparently popular with the local Quebecois, I dunno. They were just annoying, generic extreme metal with violin (complete with token hot girl violinist) and keyboards. The frontman spoke in a weird dialect that was about the French-Canadian equivalent to Spanglish--half French, half English. Oh, sidenote, the drinking age in Canada is 18, and I found out how nice it is to just be able to have a beer at a show.

So, at about 10:30 Moonsorrow came on. We had no problem pushing right to the front of the stage (bar show, no rail), and halfway through the set the guy in front of me left so I had the absolute front-center spot. It was nice. Now, the band had been wandering around the venue when we got there, and the Ville, the frontman, was already visibily drunk when we showed up. He kept drinking the whole night, and then continued drinking while onstage. So they were basically trashed, and they still put on a fucking amazing show. It was goddamn impressive. My friend grabbed the set after they were finished, here it is:

Sankarihauta
Kylän Päässä
Tuleen Ajettu Maa
Kuin Ikuinen
(??? Some illegible word scrawled on the set, "äijät"? I don't recall the song)
Unohduksen Lapsi
Pimeä
Sankaritarina
Pakanajuhla

Ville was fun to watch live, he seemed really happy that everyone was so into them (and singing along to the drunken viking choirs). One funny thing of note--before they played Pimeä, he said: "This song... is about a feeling that is common to all of us... it's about... [anguished voice:] a hangover." So yeah, it was an amazing show, and well worth the frostbitten adventure it took to see it.

The drive back was interesting. We got out of Montreal by about 1 AM, drove back through New York half asleep, stopped at a truck parking stop to sleep for an hour (3:30-4:30), then continued... it was a little frightening having to make sure our driver stayed awake. I drove the last two hours of the ride, and we got back at about 8 AM. I called in sick to work and just slept all day, haha.

So yeah.

What I just did.

Sort of metal.

Here are a few pictures, my friend Kim took almost all of them...

Driving through New York (unfortunately, these don't capture how beautiful the scenery was, and we didn't get pictures of some of the most impressive mountains and forests):

Oh, and let me just make clear how much FUN it was seeing these guys. Yes, they put on a very impressive show, but this was the most actual fun I've had at a concert in some time.

Such a long fucking setlist too damn! But too bad only one song from Verisakeet :(

Fuck I would give a kidney to see Moonsorrow play for that long in such a small place and after such a fucking drive like that  The scenery and shit had to be perfect, plus it looks colder than fucking hell.

Yeah, true, I reaaaally wanted to hear Jotunheim. But the set was heavy on Voimasta Ja Kunniasta, which is pretty much my favorite album of theirs, so I was happy.

Sounds like a really cool road trip! Did you need a passport to get into Canada? I think they require one now if you fly but I have heard that you don't need one when you drive into the country.

Yep, that's accurate. You apparently just need some form of solid ID. I had a passport handy so that's what I used, but my buddies used their social security cards and birth certificates. We had to pull over and sit around in customs for like 45 minutes, though--the friend who was driving at the time has no sense of what kind of impression he gives people, so he came off as really cocky, even though he meant well. Plus, let's face it, they're more likely to stop a group of 3 long-haired dudes in leather, patch jackets, bullet belts, etc. (plus one cute girl in similar attire ;))
