Top 5 Brave Embarrassments

1) SKID ROW – Revolutions per Minute (SPV)

2) BODY COUNT – Murder 4 Hire (Escapi)

Sounds like a demo. And the riffs ain’t so hot either.

A disdain for effort works for Venom but really, few others.

4) HELMET – Monochrome (Warcon/Chrysalis)

Angry and dull all at the same time.

The songs just aren’t there; add scrappy playing and gals singing, and this is background music.

3) DENNIS DEYOUNG (Hummingbird Centre, Toronto)

3) HEAVEN AND HELL – Only Roth with Van Halen can beat this tour. Er, easily, of course.

Keep in mind a few important rules:

-The albums you vote for don't have to be metal, they just had to come out in 2006.

-If you don't have ten albums, vote anyway. Hell, if you have one, just tell me so. I'll give points based on how many you vote for.

Again I am reminded of why I don't like most of the people on this board.

I'm not saying that if I don't like something, it's not good, I am however saying that many of you people would never even listen to the majority of the albums on my list, just dismiss them, despite the possibly greatness of them. And before you say I'm the same about different music, I'm not.

I don't even know why I'm gonna bother posting a list on this board anyway, I think I'm the only one voting for 8 of 10 albums on my list.

And furthermore, I can't stand the people who only bought like 2 albums this year. If you're into metal, you can't POSSIBLY argue that there's nothing going on in metal these days. Personally, 2006 has been the hardest year for me to determine a top 10 since I've been listening to music extensively... There's tons of great stuff and tons of diversity. Believe it or not, metal didn't die at the end of the 80s.

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, you can't deny that there's gonna be albums that other people have that you wouldn't have given a chance simply due to their genres, just as I'm sure some people would skip power metal for the sake of it being power metal.

And yeah to the last part about metal not being dead, sucks that some people will only buy the albums of a couple familiar faces.

...And if I told you to go out and listen to Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker, Sleater-Kinney, or None More Black, you probably wouldn't give a shit, despite the fact that all of those bands have put out incredibly important or outstanding albums. Po-ta-to, po-tah-to.

I don't even know why I'm gonna bother posting a list on this board anyway, I think I'm the only one voting for 8 of 10 albums on my list. All but 3 or so of my top 10 are unlikely to be voted on by anyone else, but you don't hear me whining and bitching about it. I haven't posted my list yet because I'm not done thinking about it. I'm also still waiting for an album to get here that is a likely suspect for my top 5, but distribution was so bad that I could only get it now. I'm trying to put together a comprehensive and accurate list... I know what's going to be on it, roughly, I'm just determining order at this point.
And also, I know how people are going to react, because of the fact that I'm constantly harassed for my opinions by people who think they have a right to judge them.

It's basically a fuckin' hardcore record, if it didnt say Sepultura on it I doubt many people would call it thrash. Actually, nevermind, I think its more of like a crossover thing, but still I hear way more hardcore influences than anything thrashy.

Some combination of Kisser's solos (he has the same tone on DXXI that he had for Chaos A.D., basically), the story of the Divine Comedy, the orchestration in Ostia and Still Flame, and Derrick Green's pretty decent singing voice made me love it.

I can safely say that I don't think any year will ever top this one for music. My top 10 is gonna be almost impossible to do, except I know pretty much my #1, and maybe #2. But there's seriously like 20 albums that I could easily put into the other spots. Fuck this is gonna be hard. Some albums are gonna get the axe that truly don't deserve it. If they were released last year or the year before, many could have even been #1. That's the strength of this year's material.

Yeah. Even looking at those 5 albums I voted for though, I honestly cannot put them in any order best-to-worst. Hell, since Maiden is probably gonna win I might as well leave them off my list entirely, cuz there's at least a dozen albums just as good as it by bands that I don't think are even gonna get mentioned. Always good to see a fellow Evergrey fan. I personally was somewhat dissapointed with the new album, but its still got some good stuff going for it... the classic songwriting element is still there. Those are my only complaints, otherwise, it's another classic Evergrey album.

I agree there.

To me it's like this:

Good vs Bad is completely different depending on who you ask... it's all about what you personally like and enjoy... you can't deny someone the right to think something else is good, even if you don't agree.

However

The complexity, integrity, and talent of music is not open for debate for the most part. You can actually say someone is better than someone else based on factual information, though most people just do it according to their own biased opinion.

Oh for fuck's sake. I really wish you'd get off your cross. The cold hard truth is this: If someone is interested in checking out a band, they will. You can't make them. I'm fairly certain that with the broad tastes that people here have, if you recommended a band SOMEONE would take interest. If not, then it's not the end of the world. You must be pretty thin-skinned to take such an offense to petty bullshit like that. I mean, it's the internet for crying out loud.

Because I do have a couple friends here, you know, the people that haven't written me off as a "power metal fan", cause god forbid that happen, cause it's clearly a sin in most people's eyes. I couldn't possibly be right about anything cause I hate music without melodic sense could I?
Frankly, I don't know why I'm still here, and at this point, I think I'm only sticking around to let this voting process finish out. I'm certainly not here for good conversation or to share common interests, as there's a whole total of like 2 or 3 active posters who actually agree with me on anything.
I've said this to DethMaiden and SpiralSlave outside of this board before, and I'm going to say it now.
The reason I can't get along with anyone on this board is because this board has very few fans of power metal, modern progressive metal, melodic metal, or traditional metal of today... I'm not saying you're not out there, but the numbers are incredibly small... at least of the people that actually show that they enjoy that stuff. Those genres comprise about 80% of what I listen to, but on this board I'm an outcast for liking them, and am shunned for not liking your viking metal and death metal and whatever else.
And ultimately, I don't really care. It may seem like I'm making a big deal out of it, but it's not really upsetting me all that much. When I'm not on this board, I don't think about it, and even while I'm here, I don't really care what you people think about me. I've gotten along pretty well in life without letting some pretentious and hypocritical people on a message board tell me what I should and should not listen to or believe, so I'm certainly not going to start now.
Please note, I'm not saying this all to you, I just started by responding to something you said, don't take this personally... You're actually one of the people I'd like to think I get along better with on this board.

I like Power Metal. Most people on here know that I like metal genres that are less than adored on this board (metalcore.) That doesnt mean I can run around pointing out indifferences. You are being just as much of an elitist as you claim Brad and Addi to be. You think people dont like you because of your power, progressive, bullshit-made up-basement metal tendencies. I would hardly consider Brad to be a real elitist in this board. Hell, he's my best friend here when it comes to active posters.
I don't consider any of the comments I initially said to be anything more than off-hand comments that were just made with no more intent then to make a statement. There were no hard feelings, there was no deep intentions... I was just making a statement. I didn't take any further actions until people took what I said the wrong way or got sand in their vagina for no apparent reason. Then I felt the need to state my clear intentions, and then people continued to take the ball and run with it. I don't have any hard feelings against a single member of this board, I never have, and frankly, I probably never will. If I was to see any of you outside of this board, I wouldn't care about what's been said, cause it is just a goddamn message board.

I'm not. I never got angry. There was no massive statements of anger or rage, no exclamation points... I've never gotten out of hand, I've tried to make the most intelligible statements possible at all times.
And for like the 10th time now, I'm sick of being singled out for just power metal, as if it's the only thing I listen to. Sure, it makes up a good amount of what I like, but most of my favorite bands aren't even power metal bands. The observation was about people not liking a lot more than power metal. But at this point, I might as well just have a big sign saying "power metal fan" nailed to my face.

Well, overall, power metal would include all those subgenres, though to me cheesy power metal and "flower" metal are most commonly one in the same. It includes bits of speed metal, melodic metal, orchestral metal, etc, etc, etc... the title can be stretched a good degree.
However, it cannot be stretched to cover a band like Evergrey, who is a gothic progressive metal band.

Metal isnt a science. It is an insult to the art form when you can simply plug in some figures and calculations and determine the 'genre' of a band. ITS ALL MUSIC!

But humor me, tell me how you have proven Evergrey to be non-power metal.

You're first statement is more or less completely true, and I don't really care what genre something technically is, but I like to know for a reference point.

Alright, the basic power metal checklist:

High pitched vocalist: No
Fantasy - themed lyrics: No
Medievel - themed lyrics: No
Cheesy Ballads: Ballads? Yes. Cheesy? No
Overly melodic choruses revolving primarily around major chords: No
Over-used double bass: No
Generally Fast Music: No, Never infact
Positive themes in their music/lyrics: No, except for one or two RARE occasions

Blind Guardian: Yes
Brainstorm: Yes
Demons and Wizards: Debatable. Half yes and half no. I'd have to really think about it.
Edguy: Yes
Grave Digger: I guess, though I'd say it's just as much traditional metal
Hammerfall: See above, but more towards power metal
Helloween: Yes... Old Helloween anyway, the stuff from the mid 90s on (Heckoween) is just crap, Delete it.
Invictus: Yes
Iron Savior: Yes
Jag Panzer: Yes, strong traditional sound though
Mystic Prophecy: Yes
Nevermore: Nah, I wouldn't say so
New Eden: Never heard, but it's Rick Mythiasin's side band correct? If so, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say yes.
Nightwish: Yes
Primal Fear: Yes
SACRED STEEL: Haven't heard much, it was a long time ago, I barely remember

Look, kids. There are really very few metal subgenres, and anything you can pick out will generally fit nicely into one genre or a blend of two or three. Everything else is just description; just adjectives--"Gothic Extreme Metal." "Melodic Black Metal". "Progressive Doom/Death Sludge". And people throw around terms that confuse the matter. Look at "Melodic Death Metal". Yes, Gothenburg bands developed their own distinctive sound/riff style, but when you get right down to it, what you've got is straight up heavy or power metal music, just with harsh vocals put on top. So is it really death metal at all? No, it isn't.

Don't just place a band in a subgenre because that's what someone told you. It's shallow to define a band based on nothing more than association (someone says 'Rhapsody,' generally you'll immediately think 'power metal,' but don't let that detract from your analyzing the music). If you're keen enough to hear the music and understand the ideas and what's really going on, if you know your history (progression from heavy metal to everything we have now), and if you've got enough experience across the board, you'll be able to see with confidence why a particular band is black metal, or speed metal, or death metal, or whatever.

Lecture over, I write like a complete ass when I'm sleep deprived.

Theres a few things that make it easy to spot what makes a band power metal

usually vocals are in tenor or falsetto
catchy meoldies often w/ mythological lyrics, but this is not really a rule
drums have alot of sixteenth notes and drummers often use double bass drums
the guitars have fast notes but usually stay in the same chords for awhile
most of the time theres some keyboards in the background

Thanks. We are seeing Metal Church on the 16th and I am really looking forward to it. The last time I saw them was opening for Metallica on the Black album tour, so it has been awhile.

A Chinese Firedrill is really cool. I ordered it through his website. (I think it cost $8 + $2 for shipping and he sent a guitar pick with it. A small thing but still a cool gesture.) I would consider it to be closer to Fates Warning than to Armored Saint. It has progressive moments and mellow moments. It is not something I listen to everyday, but more when I am in that kind of mood. That is why I just gave it an honorable mention.

I - Between Two Worlds

After repeatedly listening to the 3 tracks on their MySpace, I would have to say that this CD would probably be in my top 5 if I could get it in time. Unfortunately, no one carries it around here and mail-order will not get it here soon enough. If the rest of the CD is as good as those 3 songs...holy crap! I am really amazed at how good it sounds. The riffs!!!!!!!

Really? I actually love the Fratellis new album too, which is sort of Arctic Monkeys-lite, but since it's only out in the UK now, and not released anywhere that counts (i.e., the US) until March, I left it off the list.

Quasi are a fine band, but they're no Sleater-Kinney.

I agree. I think it's really stupid when people change the order of their list just to purposely gain points for their favorite albums. Submit a list YOU'RE happy with because of what you truly like, not because of points on a top 10 list.

By the way, I'm finally submitting mine tomorrow night.

Haha. Not poking fun at you whatsoever, I just find that statement funny because I'm always bitching about being in the US whenever it comes to new releases cause we get a lot of good European stuff like 3 months late unless you buy it from an independant record shop or something as opposed to waiting for it at chain stores.

I had to see that band live 3 times against my will... And each time they sounded succesively worse... I saw no talent in any member of the band, save for the drummer... lots of pointless and directionless arrangements of bad "music" though.
