Alright, I'm gonna create a random un-ordered list, but I must give 2 disclaimers first.
1.Yes, I'm a big power metal fan. Too bad.
and
2.I don't look at how old something is as a trait of greatness, hence why have albums released as recently as 2004 on my list.
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Queensryche - Operation : Mindcrime

Does it sound like Motorhead?
Some of it does, especially Storm I Ride. A lot of it really doesn't, though. It's got some striking resemblances to Sons of Northern Darkness, but with the BM element almost completely removed (whereas SOND still had some left in it). They also went for the whole epic Bathory thing as well.
I should kill you for even questioning Abbath.

Its probably cause Priests 70's albums are way better. :D
Painkiller was a polarization of Priest's capabilities, so to speak. Musically, and songwriting wise (on a strictly structural level) they are at their zenith. Thrash bands wish they could come up with shit as heavy and melodic as "Between The Hammer & The Anvil," & "One Shot At Glory." Dare I say, some of the lead passages are more impressive than some of Maiden's.
Now lyrically on the other hand, what a fucking tragedy. It's not so much that Halford was writing lines like "Here Comes the Metal Meltdown" and "Then they'll vaporapeize you" but rather that he used to write stuff like "You very lives are held between my fingers, I snap them and you cower down in fear" and "Is knowledge worth this bitter cost?" and arrived at the aforementioned Painkiller lines. I mean, what the fuck happened?

I love 70s Priest, and enjoy some of their 80s catalog. But Painkiller is frightfully bad in every respect. Well okay -- "Touch of Evil" isn't too terrible. The rest is bilge.

I don't know where to start. In virtually every way. It's like Priest trying to do a bad imitation of thrash because the thrash bands of the day were doing better than they had been. Rob sounds shrill and awful. The riffs are trite as fuck. And the lyrics are beneath discussion.
I thought it was bad when it came out, and sold my copy not long after I bought it. It wasn't until 12 years later when I started poking around the IMBB that I had any idea it had been crowned as some kind of metal classic. I thought, what the fuck? I even liked Ram It Down better back in the day -- at least that was honest Priest. So I bought a used copy on disc to try to remember what all the fuss was about. And I laughed. It's completely ridiculous.

Interesting.
I don't think Priest have ever put out an all-around perfect studio album, it seems like every one (including "Painkiller") has some lame songs or some filler that gets in the way. Their best release has got to be "Unleashed In The East" cuz there's no blemishes whatsoever.

Which song gets in your way on Painkiller?
All Guns Blazing and Metal Meltdown, and Battle Hymn is what I'd consider filler.

I always think of Battle Hymn as the set up to One Shot At Glory. The other two are fun to listen to, if you ignore the awful lyrics. Metal Meltdown would rule slightly more if I didn't hear the main riff as a break in KD's "7th Day Of July."

Nope. I fuckin' love that disc. While I appreciate it's not as technically good as Rust In Peace or Peace Sells, I don't really understand the hate it received from most people. Dave sounds good, it's has great melodies and solos and some awesome riffs. It's not thrash, obviously, but why should that matter? It shits all over the next two discs, which are both desperate attempts to make the album everyone wants him to make.

I personally feel like The System has Failed completely rapes The World Needs a Hero. TWNAH is definitely in my bottom 3 Megadeth albums, with Risk and United Abominations (heck, I think I actually like UA more, now that I think of it :eyes: ). Other than a few songs (Motopsycho, Dread and the fugitive mind, Return to hangar) it's an overall boring album.
Regarding updating my list, it'd bring me pain to make a top albums list that only included metal. But the one I posted many moons ago is still pretty good, so I wont contribute any more. :D
1. Iron Maiden: Powerslave
2. Black Sabbath: Paranoid
3. Judas Priest: Unleashed In The East
4. Megadeth: Rust In Peace
5. Metallica: Ride The Lightning

Mine wouldn't be entirely metal either. It'd certainly include Zakk Wylde's 'Book of Shadows', the first Days of The New disc and the Sixx:A.M. album for starters.
