I arrived at my local concert venue (Irvine Meadows) AKA Verizon Wireless Amp. at about 6:45. The doors had not opened yet. Waited in a LONG ass line to get in. I was amazed at how many people had on black shirts (most of them Maiden shirts). It must have been well over 90% black shirts on people. I started to feel that this night may be special like 1/31/04 of the DOD tour. Anyone that was there knows the special vibe that night had. I was worried that I may not get a good spot on the lawn but I hustled up there and got a pretty decent spot.

Sat through the opening band Three Inches Of Blood. All their songs sounded the same to me. I really did not care for them at all!

Some more waiting and talking with people. Many of them had no clue at all what the setlist would be!!! I kept my mouth shut so as not to ruin the surprise for them. I just knew this show was going to kick ass despite not being so sure about the WHOLE album being done live. My anxiety to hear the new songs live kept building. Then at about 9:12 the infamous Doctor Doctor is heard through the PA. A brief intro and then Maiden hit the stage. You could just feel the electricity in the crowd as they started.

We all know the set by now but here it is for the record:

1. Different World
2. These Colours Don't Run
3. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns
4. The Pilgrim
5. The Longest Day
6. Out of the Shadows
7. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
8. For the Greater Good of God
9. Lord of Light
10. The Legacy
11. Fear of the Dark
12. Iron Maiden
--Encore--
13. 2 Minutes to Midnight
14. The Evil That Men Do
15. Hallowed Be Thy Name

GREAT SHOW!!!! Awesome stage and lighting! The sound was..........well pretty damn good for most of the show. Maybe it was just me but the first two songs seemed that Bruce was buried in the mix a bit and the volume was not loud enough. It got better though after that. Hell, I could have gone for a bit more volume throughout the show but it was OK. I agree with what es156 said in his review of the Chicago show. The new album is fantastic sounding live and does come acroos a bit heavier than on the CD. Highlight songs for me were Out Of The Shadows, FTGGOG, ROBB, Lord Of Light, and of course HBTN! It surprised me to hear a bit of the crowd booing after about song 7 or 8 of AMOLAD but they were few and far between. Overall, I think the crowd was awesome and Bruce and the boys seemed to agree! Bruce said "WE WILL BE BACK!!!" I can't wait!

Edit: I may have more to add to this later as I gather my thoughts and relive the show in my mind a bit.

Edit: When Bruce did his talk after The Longest Day, the crowd was so pumped that we all began chanting Maiden...Maiden...Maiden... It turned into one of those moments where the crowd took over and the band just stared at each other, smiling...waiting for us to stop...it took some time for us to stop. It was a cool feeling to be pleasing the band in such a way! Bruce was in AMAZING form - I've never seen him THAT energetic on stage. We all know how he runs around like a madman, but tonight he topped himself. He sang EXTREMELY WELL and he had the crowd in the palm of his hands. I also cannot say enough about ADRIAN!!!!!!! He is the MAN!!!! He nailed everthing he played and I LOVED the fact that HE got to do the intro to 23:58 rather than Jan as he did on BNW and GMETID tours.

One of the best Maiden shows ever!!! I'm still in my post-Maiden euphoric state and it's been 4 days since the show!!!!

Speaking of pictures, I'm pissed. The Tweeter Center info said NO CAMERAS whatsoever, so we didn't even attempt to bring a camera inside... then we get inside, and every other person has a camera. I was pissed.

But good review man, I'm starting to think too many people on this board saw Maiden haha.

Here is what Rod said about the show:

:: 26-October-2006 3:15 pm
Rod Smallwood has checked in from Tokyo, Japan on the A Matter Of Life And Death World Tour:

"The show at Verizon Amphitheatre LA (October 21st) was all we could have hoped for and more. I got down there at about 5pm to check it out and meet some old friends from out old label in America Capitol. They did great by us in the eighties and l have always kept in touch. It was perfect weather for the gig - warm, sunny and little or no wind - for outdoor shows any wind can play havoc with the sound. Checked in with Dougie our sound man - we usually get a great sound at this gig and the layout of the arena is really good for sound and that night would prove to be no exception. Had a wander round outside and on stage and backstage - great vibe everywhere, you can feel the really good shows beforehand usually..."
Bullet couldn't do this show so we used 3 Inches of Blood who did really well. Had a chat with them afterwards. Nice blokes - made a mental note that they would be good to use in future if it came up.

Saw a number of other old friends of the band and myself leading up to going on. Its good to keep in touch with people. One amusing incident was when l was walking past the side of the stage and 3 guys walked quickly past onto the stage holding cups of beer and wearing only vip passes. Vips don't get you on stage and l certainly don't want anyone on stage slopping round beer in open cups so l called them back straight away to ask where they thought they were going and basically throw them off. Nicko's drum tech Charlie came over and said it was a friend of his - a fellow Canadian - Woody Harrelson!! Got to be one of my favourite actors who has made some terrific movies (and TV) so they were asked to get off more politely!!

Anyway the gig was amazing. I already told you it had sold out over a week before (16,000) and we really limited any comps the hall/promoter/band often request so the fans could be there not liggers!!! The atmosphere was terrific and the crowd did us proud. Thank LA . Ranked almost alongside Quebec as the best of the tour so far. The seats there rise steeply from the front of the stage where there is a pit for about 200 and at the back of about 1200 seats are about 4000 on the lawns. I like to go onstage for the last encore song to see the audience and here is looked amazing - everyone stood with arms held high lit by the blinders. Definitely had goose pimples.

This was the last show in north America and the whole thing went extremely well. Band really starting to fire up now and all production and sound aspects working well. We were concerned going into it how the US audiences in particular would react to us doing the whole of the album - we thought it may be hard work but every night the audience was with us. So thanks to every one of you.
