View Full Version : The Official MetalSetlists.Com Top Ten Albums of 2006 Rules

Welcome to the second annual (third overall, long story) year-end album polls here at metalsetlists.com, the web’s authority for heavy metal setlists. For those of you new to this process, I’ll explain what takes place. You post your ten favorite albums of the past year, in order, and I give them points based on their position (#1 gets 10 points, #2 gets 9 points, etc.) At the end of the polling session (December 15-December 31), I take the results and post the board’s top ten albums for the year 2006. There have been certain questions as to the exact rules, so I’ll try to address all of those as briefly as possible.

1) There is no rule against choosing non-metal albums. Just because we’re a metal community doesn’t mean all we listen to is metal. Feel free to choose albums from any genre you want, but don’t come crying to us if nothing you chose makes the board’s top ten.

2) Be honest. Don’t look at past posts, realize that an album you like isn’t going to make the top ten, and make it your number one. That takes away the genuineness of the entire thing, so please, don’t.

3) You can’t vote for the following: greatest hits collections, compilation albums, movie soundtracks (unless they are original scores), singles, and live albums. EPs and splits are fine as long as they're all material not featured on a separate full-length.

4) If an album came out in 2005 in Europe, but 2006 over here, it doesn't count. Whenever it came out first is when, for our purposes, it officially came out.

5) I’m fairly proficient in what’s come out this year, so if something in your list is suspicious, I plan to check your facts. It has to qualify to be counted.

6) The Filipczyk Corollary: If you only bought five albums this year, your #1 is only worth five points. This doesn’t mean you can vote for twenty and have your #1 worth twenty points; ten is the limit.

Most of all, have fun with it. Even though it’s our official list, it’s not official to anyone but us, so don’t make this a matter of life and death (even though I’m sure you will, wink wink).

Mods, can I get either a sticky or a "bulletin" thing? I want this up early so, over the course of the next two months, anyone who wanders by has the chance to read it and be aware of it. Thanks.

I think you made this thread too early. It's gonna need some serious bumping come voting time.

Hence wanting it to be one of those bulletin things, right now there's one that tells n00bs how to get custom avatars. I don't want constant posting on it or anything, just for it to sit there inactive so the people who aren't here very often can read it.

I dunno about the rule change on the 2005 Euro releases though, I think we need to hold some kind of debate to settle that:cool:

We also need to clarify the EP-rule. And splits.

Eh, my top ten's pretty wrapped up for this year anyways.

I think EPs should count if they're a major release or have more than 3 songs. Splits should count regardless.

I'd like to request that the Manowar EP make the list sense the new album isn't do out till next year, so technically it is original material for 2006.

I'm with ADD on this one. I don't agree with the rule change. More discussion needed on it IMO.

Okay, here's possible changes:

-It had to come out for the first time in 2006, regardless of where that was.
-EPs don't count if they have any songs from a full-length release on them. Last year's Superheroes EP got a lot of votes, but it shouldn't have. Sorry, all-original only. No Manowar either.
-Splits count.

But if there's none in the last two Tuesdays of 2006 that anyone gives a shit about, or that can't be readily listened to online for the interested, then it doesn't matter. I want the results up January 1st.

My general thoughts:

1.I have a feeling my list will be submitted VERY last minute, as right around Christmas I'm gonna be buying a few last things that I'm not gonna be able to get my hands on before then that will likely make my list. (Riot, Dungeon)

2.I think the rule on 05 Euro/06 US releases is a fair rule, I just don't like it cause the album likely to be #3 or 4 on my list won't be eligable if that rule is enforced (Nocturnal Rites - Grand Illusion).

3.The EP rule is fair. I think it an EP should be accepted if it includes no more than one song thats featured elsewhere, for example, Edguy's King of Fools and Superheroes EPs... one album track and 4 or 5 tracks not featured elsewhere.

4.I need to have a war within myself in the next 3 weeks, because the traditionalist in me says it's blasphemy to not rank my favorite band's new album which I LOVE as #1. (A Matter of Life and Death). Though, my heart believes that it really only ranks #2 behind Circle II Circle's Burden of Truth. Somehow I will have to reach a decision.

Though really, I don't think my one point will make a difference either way, being that I'd say it's a given that AMOLAD will run away with the title this year... And furthermore, I can almost garuntee that half of my top 10 will be on no one else's list except mine.

Yes, I have quite an arguement. I think Jannuary 1st should mark beginning of voting, or at least the voting should not end until a week or two into January. I'm sure at least a few others share my position:
Due to my financial situation and bad distribution, I still lack several albums released this year that I will not be able to get my hands on until after Christmas. I will need to place an order for about 4 albums immediately following Christmas, almost all of which are DEFINATE possible contenders for my list.. If the voting ends by the end of the year, my list will probably wind up being fairly innacurate.
I'm not saying you should adjust voting times JUST for me, that's rediculous... But take it into consideration being that I'm positive I'm not the only one.

What's the rush? I would think you might run the risk of getting fewer votes or having people just throw their list together to meet the deadline.

100? That's absurd. IMO if you buy 100 new albums in a year you need to seek help, have too much money, and are probably just buying new releases for the sake of buying new releases.

I only bought about 40 of them, downloaded the rest. And I am not gonna pursue 100, I'm gonna sit on the 90 I have now.

I'm also a semi-aspiring music journalist so I gotta start somewhere :D It's fun to collect albums from now to look back across the years; what's going on now may not be there in a couple years, so it's cool to be there when it's 'going down', so to speak.

Plus I'm just an unabashed music whore
