Seasons of Mist released a new Mayhem song yesterday entitled "Psywar".
Not too bad, surprisingly good production. After listening to so much Arcturus lately I am very let down with Hellhammer's drumming  .

It's very very very good! Better than most, if not all, of Ordo Ad Chao which is a great fucking album. Stoked!

Sounds very similar to the last album.

Sounds very good. Its funny that this pretty much the closest Mayhem has ever come to doing a music video.

Song is okay, better than I would have expected. I actually like the video's visuals too, but lyric videos are completely fucking stupid, especially when paired with most metal bands' insipid lyrics. Does anybody actually like these? Why is every band doing it now?

I'm not about to make a blanket statement like that, but my exact thoughts about a minute into that song were, "This is shit".

Yes, it may be wrong to make blanket statements about a genre of music, but I have yet to hear one black metal song that I didn't hate. Every single black metal song i've heard sounds the same, from the terrible thin fuzzy guitar tone to the tape recorder sound quality (which is done on purpose for the most part, so don't give me the "oh well they couldn't afford a high end studio" bullshit). And I know there are fusion genres with Death and Thrash metal and awesome bands like Skeletonwitch and Chthonic that incorporate some black metal traits, but i'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the pure "tr00" black metal bands. And I also know the later works of bands like Burzum moved away from that typical style, but by that time they weren't really making Black metal anymore.

But hey, i'd love to be proven wrong and would love to hear a black metal song I like, and then maybe a full album, and possibly even a whole band's catalogue. But every song i've heard from bands like Marduk, Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth, and other Scandinavian bands that people consistently blow their loads over sounds like shit. Am I missing something? Am I not looking in the right places? Should I just stick to my American Groove metal and forget about it?

Mayhem (besides their debut and their last record), Gorgoroth, and Dark Funerlol are shite anyway so you aren't missing much from not liking that. I think the kind of black metal you might be into would either be bands that take the sound of early black metal and actually make it sound good like Thantifaxath (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRV60BxEGF8), Mutilation Rites (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22u4rw1F9mM), or Winterfylleth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqDQJ5mB1P0)or bands like Oranssi Pazuzu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHqtwDrk3_g) and Negative Plane (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x2wev_Jgy4) that are so weird in their takes of black metal it doesn't resemble first or second wave besides some vocal parts.

It's been 12 years since they did anything interesting.

Down II is probably the worst thing they've done.

Either way clean out your ears and give Over the Under another listen. If the riff to "N.O.D." doesn't get stuck in your head you're a terrible person.

That Thantifaxath band I could see myself not minding just listening in the background.

Also, they're an excellent live band.

They seriously need to switch up their setlists and play some more deep cuts. I mean, how many times do you need to see the Bury Me In Smoke set-closing jam?

Anyway, back on topic.... I think this new Mayhem album has some potential to be better than their last couple, but we'll see what the whole album sounds like....
