DEFTONES vocalist Chino Moreno tells RollingStone.com in a new interview that the band is taking a break for the remainder of 2014. "We just finished a tour, so we're gonna take the rest of the year off," he says. "We're gonna start writing some music early next year. I just moved to Oregon and Stephen [Carpenter, guitar] is down in L.A. and Abe [Cunningham, drums] and Frank [Delgado, keyboards] are in Sacramento, and Sergio [Vega, bass] is in Europe."

Moreno adds: "The idea is to just get together. The last couple records, we just threw ourselves into a small room and started playing. We just work organically, which I think works better than me writing a song and saying, 'Hey, guys, learn this.' Hopefully in February [2015], we'll spend a couple weeks together, and just kind of get together and write music."

Damn I was hoping to see them once more in support of the last album. My date from the first headlining tour got postponed due to hurricane Sandy and then I passed on the A7X tour.
Hopefully this means Palms will do more touring. Or Team Sleep...

Yeah, they should release that and I am fine with them not touring cuz I can continue to save money.

a website i will not mention seems to think the interview in question was actually conducted late last year, meaning he meant taking the rest of 2013 off, and deftones getting together february 2014. the announcements of rocklahoma and river city rock fest today certainly contradict the idea of taking the rest of 2014 off.

I find most bands have different definitions of "taking a break"

in this case, them taking a break means "lets do three shows to give us walking around money and see how long it lasts";)

I find, having followed the Deftones since the mid-1990's, that after a touring cycle for an album finishes they always said "we're heading right into the studio to work on the next album" then the disappeared for a year or two. They always had a history of taking a really long time putting out albums, when in the late 1990's they really could've capitalized on nu-metals success and probably made more money. But, at the same time, by taking so damn long they didn't over saturate themselves and were able to give themselves staying power that keeps them relevant twenty years later.

What I'm getting at, is don't expect a new album from them until late 2015. I hope I eat my words, but that's what history makes me think.

2015 would actually be on par for them.

Adrenaline: 1995
Around the Fur: 1997
White Pony: 2000
Deftones: 2003
Saturday Night Wrist: 2006
Diamond Eyes: 2010
Koi No Yokan: 2012

When they announced Koi No Yokan I was surprised it was out so "soon" after Diamond Eyes given their track record.

Between SNW and Diamond Eyes was the longest gap but technically they made two albums in that time frame, just didn't release Eros.

They're doing a festival tour. Why is this being discussed?

Interview is either out of date or the bands plans changed.

DEFTONES Will Write New Album In 2014, Not 2015 (http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/deftones-will-write-new-album-in-2014-not-2015/)
DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno wants to clear up any confusion over some recent comments he made to Rolling Stone magazine, saying that the band intends to begin working on music for its eighth studio album this year. The timeline of the Rolling Stone article was vague, suggesting that the quintet would not even start writing new songs until early 2015. But Moreno told The Pulse Of Radio that's not the case. "I think we're all excited to make some noise together again, so I think right now we're looking at, planning-wise, of doing that, and hopefully have a record or material to go record by the end of the year or early next year."

Well, they already have to get working visas for the Russian shows so in 3 months they may be able to use those to play in Kiev as well.

I'm not kidding, i saw three physical altercations outside of the russian consulate (NYC) while i was waiting in line. A russian guy in line told me it was an excellent preview of what to expect when i arrived in country.
