We arrived at the legendary Brass Mug in Tampa about two hours before doors because I was suppose to meet up with Terry Butler from Obituary and Mike Browning from Nocturnus A.D to interview them. The interviews went very well, but I think Mike took one of my questions the wrong way, and the way he answered it made me look like I didn't know what I was talking about because I didn't get to finish the question lol. Oh well. We completely missed the first band "Tickle" because we went over and ate a burrito as big as my wrist, worth it.

We headed back inside right as the band Nakhiel had started. Nakhiel are an odd band, their intrumentals reminded me of bands like In Flames and Scar Symmetry, but with Wolves In The Throne Room type black metal vocals over it. The circle pits got started up early for these guys and never really let up. A good way to start an evening of metal.

Up next were Archangel. Other than the meh band name, these guys were awesome, they sounds like a mix between Iced Earth and Overkill. This was only the band's third show ever, but you wouldn't have guess it. I'll definitely have to check these guys out further.

Next it was time for the band i was mainly there for, Nocturnus A.D! Everyone who is familiar with Nocturnus knows about all the drama between Mike and the other guys, and for a while he told me he wasn't even allowed to use Nocturnus A.D, and that this was their first show under that name in a while. It was more than obvious a majority of the crowd were here for Nocturnus A.D, the circle pits became more violent, while everyone in the front screamed/sang along to just about every word. Nocturnus A.D's set was flat perfect, Mike Browning hasn't slowed down out bit, I'm still unsure as to how he's able to play like he does while focusing on doing lead vocals at the same time. I can't wait to see these guys at Maryland Deathfest in May, they've stated they are playing "The Key" in it's entirety, assuming they are given a 45+ minute set.

This was my third time seeing Obituary live, and they get better and better every time. This was also their first show back from writing and recording their upcoming album(Terry said the release will be late May, possibly June 1st), and they even played three new songs that had never been played live before. It's crazy to see these guys (who are over twice my age) still being able to play their music like this, they were almost flawless, except for when Donald Tardy completely fucked up on Infection, he just has this dumbfounded face and the rest of the band noticed as well as pointed and laughed at him for it, all in good fun.

All in all, it was an awesome night filled with awesome music, great food, great hangs, plus getting to talk metal trivia with Terry Butler and Mike Browning was amazing. It shows like these that make me glad to live in Florida.

Is Obituary still playing with only one guitarist?

They had another guitarist when I saw them in October. I don't think he was a permanent member though.

They have two guitarists. Kenny Andrews, and yes he's an official member.

Just locally here, but after they put the album out there will be a "big tour announcement".

I'll take your word about Nocturnus not slowing down their stuff. They're probably the band I'm most looking forward to at MDF this year.

EDIT: Someone put up their set on Youtube.

Yeah, this is very promising.

Your set was pretty awesome, although it was slightly weird seeing Mario up there, I'm so used to seeing him with Riptorn.

You could tell their bassist was getting irritated by the cameras after the second song. I did photograph their set, but i general stop after the first couple songs, the guy next to me shot their entire set. :bouville:

Thank you for the kind words, we really appreciate it. We knew going in that a majority of the crowd was going to be straight death metal fans, but we were still honored to be allowed to share the stage with these guys, Nocturnus and Obituary in particular of course. We were just trying to put on as entertaining of a show as we could and not embarrass ourselves. Our band members all love and respect death metal so it was nice to hear the crowd reaction considering thats whats they ultimately came to see, lol. Thank you again for the review we already have our next show booked we're just waiting on the go ahead to announce it. :shred:
As for Mario, he looks odd all the time, but in particular when he has a guitar in his hand instead of a bass. :D

I noticed haha, I kept thinking the whole time "wait, was he playing a guitar in riptorn?".

I've interviewed him/riptorn before, they're cool dudes for sure.
