View Full Version : Matt Shadows Is A Idiot

Avenged Sevenfold have been at the center of some pretty interesting controversies in the metal world this year. From Rob Flynn of Machine Head saying their new record was basically a bunch of cover songs to the band changing their artwork for Hail to the King record after it got a poor reaction, 2013 has been a newsworthy year for them. Now lead singer M. Shadows is touting their importance as a band once more.

Avenged Sevenfold are featuring as the cover stars on this month's Metal Hammer UK magazine and in a new interview, M. Shadows certainly didn't hold his tongue.

Initially I thought the dude was being kind of a cocky dick, but I think he's just genuinely proud of his band and everything they've accomplished. They sell out places, make a lot of money, and all the stuff most of us sit here wishing we could do. According to a transcription of the interview by Blabbermouth, M. Shadows said about the metal scene in North America:

"To be honest, I think rock music is in a pretty rough place in America today. I don't feel that mainstream America really cares about rock music right now. Honestly, it's a little scary. It'd be cooler if there was a new 'Big Four' leading the charge and taking metal to a new place, but it's pretty obvious right now that metal is taking a beating. We want metal to be dangerous again. How cool would that be?"

And the real reason you're here, the "fuck the haters" thing (which I agree with him on mostly):

"No other metal band is doing what we're doing. We've all heard people in bands who I won't give any publicity to shouting their mouths off in recent months, but fuck the haters. People know that they'll get more attention by talking shit about us and if that's the way they want to run their bands, that's fine, but it's not what we would do. We go out there and kill it every night and you can see what this means to people."

I get it. I get that he's proud and all, but "haters"? C'mon dude, use your big boy words. Also, let's not say Avenged Sevenfold is doing something super unique here. They've got their unique sound and all, but they're not re-inventing the wheel here. I'll give Shadows a solid "B" for this interview. Needs improvement.

So according to him, metal isn't doing well, we need a new big 4, and A7X are the greatest thing to ever happen to music.

There are enough Metal/Hardrockbands "coming up". Too bad A7X, Volbeat & Sabaton are the most popular.

They are the most popular pop metal group around today, I'll give them that.

They haven't had a good song in a real fucking long time though.

Same here. They're probably the only young metal band around who can sell out our arenas. A few others can play them, like Alter Bridge, but can't sell them out.

I didn't mind the title track from the new album, but the rest of it is fucking awful.

They played a arena here last tour and didn't sell it out, I think their last few headliners here haven't sold out with one having shitty attendance.

On the surface he's completely right. We don't have anything remotely close to a Metallica/Guns n Roses/Nirvana of our generation, and people bitch about A7X all the time.

But obviously he has no idea whats going on... you can't even say "in the underground", just beneath the level of popularity they've achieved. We all know that there is plenty of great rock and metal to go around, it's just that pretty much all of the broad genres have been explored and the majority of fans flock to smaller pigeonholes. Why don't people like bands that claim to be "the next Metallica/Motorhead/AC-DC", or even the new A7X album? Been there, done that.

And his fvck tha h@terz comment would have come out better if he just said "we do what we want to do and if you want to waste your breath criticizing us, go ahead".

You can't try and say that there aren't any huge metal bands that can sell out places like Metallica can (when they actually tour) or anything because in most genres there aren't tons of bands that can sell out a arena.

I mean Pink, Miley Cyrus, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake have all played here over the last year or so and none of them sell out their venue.

That kind of surprises me for how major a city Chicago is.

Jay Z & JT sold out Fenway Park two nights in a row last summer. Pink sold out the Garden twice in 2013. Miley's coming around in April and it sold out in a week. Not to mention Taylor Swift and One Direction selling out Gillette Stadium on multiple nights.

T-Swift and One Direction sold out quick.

Miley Cyrus is playing a smaller arena (around 10,000) and Pink both that small arena as well as a larger one. Both had great attendance just didn't sell out.

I knew Cyrus wouldn't sell out. I don't think JTs solo show sold out and the JT / Jay Z show was at a football stadium so I didn't expect it to sell out.

P!nk is actually not that bad imo.

I've seen A7X once, in 2005 I believe. I only remember Pantera's Walk... :bliss:

She's not. She's a damn good pop artist with a great voice.

And I saw A7X on the first Uproar where the main stage was Disturbed, A7X, Stone Sour, and Halestorm.

That was the tour where Portnoy fucking killed it daily. Still a great show.
