View Full Version : The Official Metal Setlists Best Of 2013 Voting Thread

Copypasta from last year and the year before AND THE YEAR BEFORE AND THEN THE YEAR BEFORE THAT:

1. You can only vote for albums (or EPs or splits) of newly-recorded studio material that was released in the United States in 2013. This should pretty much be a given at this point

2. You still need 10 albums to get full credit for your #1. If you vote for 5 albums, your #1 is worth 5.

3. The new multiplier is as follows: if an album receives three or more votes, each voter gives two bonus points to that album. For example, an album given a 3rd, 5th, and 10th by three different voters would earn 8 points for the 3rd, 6 points for the 5th, 1 point for the 10th, and an additional 6 points (2 times 3) for the voter quantity multiplier. Algebra can be fun when metal is involved.

4. Please refrain from posting your top 50 or whatever here, and from posting images of the albums you're voting for. Start your own damn threads for that, it'll just clog the page if you do it here.

5. There is no "metal only" rule, as decided by the Metal Setlists electorate. Diversify if you wish.

6. Have fun and don't be afraid to argue. That's the point of this whole charade.

NOTE: If you've already started a thread of your own, still cast your vote in here or it won't count. I'm not gonna hunt and peck all over the board for your list.

If you have any questions, feel free to post em here.

You have until January 7th, 2014 to get 'em in! That's one week!

I'm not here because I'm trying to talk shit or criticize anybody's opinions but just out of curiosity I have to ask: why does everybody like Sunbather so much?

Because that type of black metal is really good when done right and Sunbather is probably the best black metal album in that type ever. Just the right amount of black metal and post-rock/shoegaze so that neither really overpowers the other style, but they play off each other and compliment each other really well. Also I think a lot of people here like post-rock/metal (I think we've had lots of setlist reviews lately for Neurosis and GY!BE and stuff like that) so it's bound to be popular here.

Because that type of hipster metal is really good when done right and Sunbather is probably the best black metal album that Rolling Stone loved ever. Just the right amount of black metal and post-rock/shoegaze hipster shit so that neither really overpowers the other style, but they play off each other and compliment each other really well to create the perfect music to sit in barnes and noble and drink a starbucks to. Also I think a lot of people here are wannabe hipsters (I think we've had lots of setlist reviews lately for Neurosis and GY!BE and stuff like that) so it's bound to be popular here.

I honestly thought they'd be top 3 given the way everyone's been talking about that album.

Maybe the fact that a bunch of other places have recognised it has put everyone off of being "generic"?

Wouldn't that be the Deafhaven logic though? God knows everywhere talked about that too and that's a guarantee it'll be here by end of the year. Might not be "heavy" enough. I really don't know.

People, people, people...that Carcass album was good, but not THAT good.

Also, the same goes for deafheaven (though it was way better than Carcass).

Glad to see the love for albums like SubRosa, Red Fang, Nails, The Ocean, etc.

I'll send my list to Manks soon.

The Carcass and Deafheaven albums are both that good, however good "that" is. ;)Since it really boils down to taste, we'll just have to agree to disagree. "Surgical Steel" was "Heartwork II", and my opinion of "Heartwork" is well documented. I've always respected deafheaven, but mixing black metal with post-metal has been done many times before, and in some cases better. "Teethed Glory & Injury" is a phenomenal album, and not mentioned once in this thread (unless I missed it).

Also forgot to mention above: Sabbath gets the same comment as above, but I'm glad it's getting votes so I'm not complaining. I was late to the game on Gorguts, and it seems like that's unfortunate. Gotta check that one out more.

People are more worried about having generic opinions these days than they are about the actual music being generic.

Yeah I'm working on my list now. Probably my most mainstream list ever but it's what I listened to this year. Sometimes when you inundate yourself with a type of music you need a break from it. Last year I probably would have loved Uncle Acid, Intronaut and Nails but while I liked all 3 I just didn't listen to them that much. I would love to see Nails live but listening to the cd in my car just bored me after a few spins.

2013 Was a good thash year to me. Some of my hardest cuts were thrash albums and Revocation which came in at #11. Had I heard Power Trip earlier it may have made my list also.

The most puzzling thing about 2013 for me was Clutch. Some of the same people who went on and on about Strange Cousins didn't like Earth Rocker?

I still don't like Strange Cousins other than 2-3 songs. It's by far Clutch's worst release to me yet they follow it up with a masterpiece and people aren't that into it?

I thought this was the 1st year my #1 would be a landslide #1 choice on here. Back in July when I was listening to Earth Rocker non-stop I would given odds that Clutch would have the #1 album on this site. Wrong again...

I wouldn't call it the greatest thing in the world but it is damn good. I can already see it winning this year and I'm fine with that (although Nails 'Abandon All Life' levels it and everything else).

I loved the first album more. Buts its defiantly the best this year. Nails was fucking dope too

Probably my most mainstream list ever but it's what I listened to this year.

That was my logic too. That's how Sabbath ended up so high. The best stuff is always the stuff you keep going back to and listening to over and over, even if there's something more inventive and clever out there, if you just don't listen to it, what does that matter?

The new Leprous was like that for me this year. It's brilliantly clever, as is always the case with them, but it doesn't bear the repeated listening other things did.

The Nomad Son disc is very good also. It will probably not crack my top 10 but it is definitely top 20.

That's the kind of reasoning that made it number one. I can listen to it on repeat ad infinitum. Same with Sabbath.

Same for me. Would have made top 20, but not quite top 10. Mostly because it's not their best effort. I think I prefer both their other albums, and therefore think as good as 'The Darkening' is, it could have been better. Also try a band called Stonegriff. It be good stuff :)

Spiderman was good, very memorable, but felt a bit ADD at times. Loved all the characters though!

It's funny I recall us having debates about Scurrilous lyrics. You loved them, I hated some of them. Volition is not only way better lyrically to me, vocally it's more like Kezia which I prefer and Chris Adler takes them to a new level musically to me.

Like I eluded to in my write up I think albums should be judged for what they are. Even if someone didn't like Scurrilious I think they might like Volition. I did.

I can honestly say I've never seen that in my life. Wikipedia says it was on from 1994 to 1998, I think I may have been at a stage in my life where I wasn't watching cartoons then.

This year was probably a personal record in terms of the amount of cool new bands and new albums I listened to. So much good stuff in every genre this year.

I can honestly say I've never seen that in my life. Wikipedia says it was on from 1994 to 1998, I think I may have been at a stage in my life where I wasn't watching cartoons then.

The X-Men cartoon was so awesome. I was eleven or twelve when it first came on and Rouge was the first time I ever noticed the female form.

You should check it out. Spiderman The Animated Series (what it's officially called to differentiate it from other Spiderman cartoons) crossed over with the Xmen cartoon a couple of times.

It's good, but it's a poor-man's Relentless Retribution.

Relentless Retribution is probably my favorite Death Angel disc but I really like the new one as well. It will be top 10 for me. I also apparently liked the new Orchid disc more than you did. I have listened to it and the Heretic EP quite often his year. I will check out the Stonegriff if I can. I have not heard of them before.

Have you heard 'Capricorn' and 'Through The Devil's Doorway'? Sooo much better. And way less plagiarism:D

Actually I have heard Capricorn and I like it as well. It was in my top 20 in 2011. I am looking forward to the re-issue that has both Capricorn and Through The Devil's Doorway on one disc.
