40. Exhumer - Degraded By Sepsis
http://www.metal-archives.com/images/3/8/6/3/386399.jpg?4654

The new Exhumed may have been a disappointment, and their tracks on the Iron Regan split are a fucking joke (terrible backing vocals, terrible riffs, terrible covers), but Exhumer does not disappoint. Super tight and precise brutal death. Check it out.

Terrible samples, excellent slam. To me the samples add nothing and they're pretty lame but it can't stop me from enjoying this.

Idk how a band can just come back and put out something as good as this. Doesn't sound like a "reunion", just sounds like they wanted to put out another album and it's awesome.

https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/1393678_560228840716380_1598233390_n.jpg

New band from the founding guitarist and drummer of Devourment. This is their second single, with a new song and a rerecording of a classic Devourment song. They were supposed to rerecord MTD in its entirety, but Brian Wynn very suddenly left the band. I only wish they would've released a full length beforehand. Regardless, they've found a new guitarist and I hope that they live up to their full potential.

Vomit Forth Blood and Self Disembowelment (along with their first single Commence The Suffering) can be listened to here:

Let me know how Lamb Of God is btw. I miss middle school.

Entertaining when they're not playing shit from their last two albums, is my guess. I'm assuming they haven't completely lost it in the five years since I last saw them in terms of live ability, but I don't expect the live arena to improve their mediocre output in the intervening years. But that's my own assumption, not a generic, rehashed, "view" of how I'm supposed to consider metal, so I don't expect you to understand.

Let's pre-empt whatever the outcome is with "brutal!!1!" and leave it at that, shall we?

Not elitists, just fellow metalheads who prefer to call it like they see it. Speaking of which, your list was one of the most one-dimensional I have ever read on here, and I've been around for about five years. The comments you are probably filing under "elitist" are primarily from those members who don't appreciate being bashed just because they gave you some constructive criticism and you couldn't handle it. Sounds like you're the one who's still stuck in middle school mentality, bro.

In other news, I agree with Slap - that Witherscape album was pretty aight. Surprised to see it on this list, though.

metallicbrian666

Some words and punctuation used to illustrate thoughts

I'm more or less enjoying the rather serious/negative response to what is essentially a tongue in cheek thread/idea.

I'm also intrigued by people calling my list one dimensional, with one user going as far to write off "brutal death grindcore" as a whole and call it all the same like he's my mom or something. This isn't a list of the most innovative albums (although the argument could be made for a few), it's the 40 albums I liked the best from the year.

But then again, I shot first with that mean thread title. How dare I present myself in such a rude and informal way on the grandest stage of all........a message board :rocker:

Didn't want to bother being serious because that would go against the Christmas spirit of my thread, but fuck Sunbather.

7. Meshiha - Molesting The Decapitated (Zombie Edition) 2 Song EP
https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/1393678_560228840716380_1598233390_n.jpg

Vomit Forth Blood and Self Disembowelment (along with their first single Commence The Suffering) can be listened to here:
http://www.reverbnation.com/meshihaofficial

I wasn't thrilled that these guys were going to re-record MTD, as it is arguably the best slam album ever. But I did like their single, and their version of Self Disembowelment isn't bad. (Un)Fortunately, Ruben Rosas' vocals will never be duplicated (except maybe by Satan himself, or a Satan-possesed Donald Duck), so no re-recording of a MTD song is ever going to be close to the original.

Damn I didn't know this forum had so many elitists

Oh, there are many, my friend. But their are also plenty of cool, respectful people here (most people here are cool and respectful, so don't let it get to you). It's funny, I just wrote in another year-end review thread that this place had some trendy-ass hipsters, and a bunch of people got defensive about it. The people who give you shit about your enjoyment of slam death are EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Let those idiots listen to whatever doom metal CD is the hippest at the time, because that will invariably be one of their top 5 albums of the year.

So let me get this straight: From your post, it appears as though you're implying there's something wrong with a list being "one-dimensional." Is there something wrong with someone liking a certain subgenre and preferring to stick to it? If there is, then please explain. Is it "optimal"? No, of course not. But why do you care (why would ANYONE care) what other people listen to?

OP - very cool list. Huge slam fan here, there are some great ones on your list. And a few more I have to check out.

Yes, it is. It seems to me, and it's my opinion and nothing else, that every year, it's a doom album that everyone fawns over and is the "hip" thing to listen to. Plenty of great doom metal out there, but that, along w/ sludge metal and stoner rock/metal, are certainly the "hip" subgenres of heavy metal nowadays. Compared to the various "post" sub-genres? No. Those are the hip ones. Have been for years and the bubble still hasn't burst. It will of course, and at the moment I'm not sure what will take over. I'm sure there are websites that will tell us what to listen to next ;)

Doom often rates highly for me (my album of the year is a doom one this year, which isn't always the case), but that's because I'm a doom fan and always have been. I haven't really noticed the metal world agreeing. In fact, I barely ever find anyone's even heard of or listened to the best doom releases every year. Apart from the one or two doom guys here.

You're right, this isn't "more" hip than the post subgenres (I'm assuming you mean "sub"-subgenres) like atmospheric black metal, or "noise" shoegazing, whatever some of these are called! So many "sub" sub-genres I can't keep up.

Nah, but you said, shoegaze it's hipster's metal of choice but shoegaze isn't metal. Not even close. Whether or not hipster like shoegaze or not is a different topic. "doom" is hip now, but DOOM certainly isn't.

I think it's a different distinction than that.

Retro "1970s" rock is hip right now, and a bunch of it is getting lumped together with doom. The likes of Orchid, Scorpion Child, Blues Pills, Zodiac, Graveyard, Witchcraft, et al. They're not doom. They borrow some of the lyrical themes and moods, but that's it.

So, like you say, that stuff is cool, but real doom isn't. Candlemass didn't suddenly see a huge uplift in sales, you know?

That said, Pilgrim and Windhand seem to be quite well regarded at the moment. I think Pilgrim pulled it off just by making a damn good album. Windhand I don't get, because 'Soma' is their most boring music to date. Wouldn't be the first band to get dull and get popular at the same time though.

In SubRosa's case, I don't think it's mislabeling at all. Maybe if you're talking about a band like Leeches of Lore it is, but I'm not aware of a common misinterpretation of it. Genre's evolve. Sounds evolve. Not every doom band is going to sound like Saint Vitus or Candlemass. Surely you know this though, so what gives?

If you think SubRosa isn't doom then we're just on very different wavelengths. Or maybe we just disagree on language.

Zach, if "I Woke Up In A New Bugatti" was an album, it would've been at the top of this list. However, seeing as Ace Hood's grand opus transcends both music and art as a whole, one shan't find it fit to be ranked amongst a traditionally ordered "best-of" list. Nay, such a divine source of pleasure must only be placed up against similar creations that will forever stand the test of time. Such cannot be found in the year 2013, a year plagued by impure tyrants with forged birth certification.

Also, to people who found enjoyment/agreement from my list, kudos.

Who knew a few of these >>> could make this thread so much more intelligent and sarcastic at the same time? Barnes and Noble both approve.

Since the Hipster who compiled Rolling Stone's Top 20 Metal cds loved Melt Banana and chose Sunbather as #1 while calling it Shoegaze, it all becomes relevant in the end. I just don't know why 'hipster' is such a derogatory word around hereIt's a derogatory word everywhere. Catch up.

You are a cretin, Larvtard. And the music you like is garbage.

And apparently I'm a trendy-ass hipster because I like doom and black metal. Though, not good doom, as ravenheart would reckon. Only he and one or two other people like good doom. I like hip doom.

I also like post-rock, making me even more hip than if I just liked hip doom.

DethMaiden is just a dilettante who likes to sit in Barnes & Noble and fancy himself a pundit as he writes his hipster reviews of the newest hipster albums, like Sunbather.

Shoegaze is typically beautiful, but vacuous. But it's way better than slam metal.

We have all been brainwashed by Aristotle for the last 2,500 years.Best post in this thread. There is much wisdom here (it's just too bad a few people didn't get it).

Also, SubRosa is most definitely doom. Are they most definitely hip? Beats the fuck out of me. No one knows who they are, so I suppose the answer is yes. Is that how it works? Probably not. All I know is that their new album is so good, that there's a very serious possibility of them topping my year-end list with consecutive albums. I thought for a minute about the shit I might get from people for doing that, but this thread cements it. I don't give a fuck. The album spoke to me yet again, and I just couldn't get it out of my listening queue (not that I ever wanted to). That's what my lists are all about. I'd be a charlatan if I dropped it down a few notches just so I don't appear to be a fanboy. If that's what I am, then so be it.

For a long time this year I thought I might end up doing the same with Cathedral, but they've been beaten out now. In fact, their position in my top ten is in jeopardy, even though it's a fantastic album.

So? Decibel likes them, so you're being a mindless sheep if you do, too? C'mon, man. I liked those bands before Decibel ever "told me" they were cool, so fuck the fact that Decibel happens to agree with me. I don't have time to scour the internet trying to find shit that's not on anyone else's list so I can adopt it as my own and thus be called the coolest cat on the block because my year end thread is filled with shit nobody ever heard of - I like what I like. Period.

Didn't say they were bad, they're just hip.

#backpeddling #fullofshit #onedimensionalYeah, we get that you can come up with ironical thread titles. You're so fucking clever.

When I was referring to back-peddling, I wasn't even talking about that. I was referring to the existence of posts like the following:

Thanks man

Let me know how Lamb Of God is btw. I miss middle school.

Hmm.....maybe you're just stupid? Or you just didn't like it.....

Of course, as we've all learned from multiple choice tests, "all of the above" is usually a solid guess.

It took you a second? Oh dear.....
...wherein you insult the people reading your thread, and then post bullshit like this:

I'm more or less enjoying the rather serious/negative response to what is essentially a tongue in cheek thread/idea....implying that "I never meant anything by it, you people take shit too seriously, etc. etc. etc.".

It's the very definition of back-peddling. You were being a dick, and you got called out for it. Just own it like a man and move on. You don't even have to apologize (although you probably should), but for fuck's sake stop trying to act like it's everybody else who were taking shit too seriously or being asshole-ish. It was you.

Oh, and your thread is one-dimensional as hell, too. It's 98% slam, plus a few other things like Melt Banana thrown in there because your listening tastes are oh so eclectic and varied.

Please.

The point is, the comments you got were fairly accurate, but you didn't like them, so you punked out and started calling people names and acting like a child.

Is that a clear enough explanation for you?

To this I shall respond with words:

- I understand I was being a dick. People said rude things in my thread so I returned with rude things, no one is disputing this. You originally responded to my joking about people here being elitist, which wasn't serious. I was making fun of the fact that people were saying I was acting like I was better than them, when REALLY they're better than me. I don't really care what people like but its strange to dispute someones tastes when comparing them to your own as fact.

- What I thought was a harmless response to the dude who said he didn't "get" Melt Banana apparently turned him into "WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT MY GIRL, BRO??" mode, which was totally unnecessary and entirely entertaining. He wrote off something that wasn't his cup of tea, I responded by essentially saying that while he may not like it others do, and he was extremely offended by that. As if its impossible to like it, because if it was, he most definitely would.

- I want to clarify, I have no issues with you. If I'm not mistaken we met at MDF? I mean no harm with the shitty things I tend to say online. I just think its interesting that me liking music of a certain style is somehow negative. If you like cookies, but Oreos are your favorite, you're probably going to eat Oreos most of the time. Does that mean other people should think less of you for it?

Try and read and retain next time. Show me where you said "while he may not like it others do", or something even close. Go for it, because now you're just making it up. So, in addition to being the Dick of December, you're a flat out liar. Let's recap shall we:

Me: I tried this Melt Banana thing, sorry I don't get it. What's to enjoy about 30-40 minutes of bumper music on Robot Chicken/Adult Swim?

You: You answered your question in the first sentence.

I never said your list is crap, I never said this album sucked, I never said anything ridiculous like that. I simply didn't get what was entertaining about something way off-beat and foreign to my ears. Your next chess move was to act all high and mighty and woe unto lesser beings such as myself for not comprehending the tucked away painting in the darkened gallery.

You chose to act like a sarcastic dick about it, and now you're acting like a stupid child by not addressing me directly, I have to come back to you for this nonsense.

I didn't think that was a sarcastic response. You said you didn't get it, and asked what there is to enjoy about it. I didn't say that you were stupid, I didn't say you were a lesser person for thinking so, it simply didn't click with you. So be it. What sounds like "30-40 minutes of bumper music on Robot Chicken/Adult Swim" to you is my favorite music released this year.

I'm sorry for being a dick to you but after a thread full of people whining about my choices, and El Gordo's well-informed analysis of "brutal death grindcore" all being the same, I assumed it was more of the same.

Plus I thought the smiley face would soften the blow :(

If people were seriously upset by things said in this thread then sorry. But really now, when people starting coming in and making comments against the list I assumed it was anything goes. To have it then turned on me with "how coud u say that bro" is laughable. Also to have the responses in the first half of the thread looking down upon my list as "one-dimensional", with the second half saying how I was acting "high and mighty" is also hilarious.

Say what you will about my sarcastic responses but they were contained in my thread, which was started with a sarcastic title/post in the first place. I'm not going in other peoples best-of lists to discuss how pretentious they are in comparison to moi. If people would like to give their "constructive criticism" on how I should listen to music the right way then by all means, sign me up for your online seminar.

I don't like that posts with more than one sentence look like ultra-serious lectures so read this again in Gilbert Gottfried's voice. Also be sure to wear your 3-D glasses to get all those dimensions you expect from a metal forum

Yes, because when I said I didn't call him stupid, I was referring to when I called him stupid. Clearly, when I said that I didn't call him stupid, I myself was too stupid to recall the moment that I did call him stupid, thus my saying that "I didn't call him stupid" was in fact, stupid to say.

Thank you for pwning me with your creative usage of hyperlinks, hopefully we can see a few more used to pick apart what has been posted in this thread and find all possible loopholes to further prolong the pwnage.

Since you'll probably cut that up into multiple quotes to reply to, I'll offer an explanation:

He said my saying that he didn't "get it" was sarcastic, insulting, etc. I stated that I didn't intend it in that manner. My calling of him stupid that you so graciously pointed out for me was in response to his response, not his dislike of Melt Banana. Glad we could sort that out.

In regards to MetalAsArt's post and/or my response being ironic, I guess I'm not seeing it. My analogy was about liking cookies and preferring a certain cookie, thus consuming it more often. This of course is compared to music, where I like metal but listen to more slam/brutal death because I prefer it. Him stating "I like cookies. Problem?" is like him stating "I like metal. Problem?" There is no problem. There is no confliction with the analogy. There is no connection between that response and my analogy other than the words "like" and "cookie". If you would like me to look up the definition of "trying too hard", I'm sure Google could find me a mirror for you.

This is not worth continuing, the thread was initally derailed with the important topic of "what IS hipster?" and it's now pointless arguing. I guess I'm just really good at making lists.

Metal-Archives can be cool for recommendations and rumors/news but lately it seems like its just new people trying to start discussion, so its just threads like "What is metal?" or "Classic albums that are mediocre but you and 3 friends like"
