You've probably explained this in the past but why a separate list each for worst and best pop songs but not metal, out of curiosity.

number of "pop" albums I listened to this year = 2
number of metal albums I listened to this year = a lot more

I actually used to do a worst of and best of for metal albums, but this is easier for me. I can write better about things I like than things I hate.

If you want, I can try and do a worst 5 metal albums for me :3

Worst Pop Songs Of 2013

Zedd - Clarity (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxxstCcJlsc)

To be completely honest, this isn't a horrible song. It was just overplayed to the point of nausea. It's probably at the forefront of that weird movement that's house/electronic music with sugary-sweet pop vocals that has been huge since like 2011. I thought that stuff was only popular in German warehouses twelve years ago, but we'll see what happens with it in the years to come.

Demi Lovato - Heart Attack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AByfaYcOm4A)

Put simply - I don't think Demi Lovato can sing. I think she tries way too hard on this track and I think the lyrics are just cringe-worthy. It's infectious but for all the wrong reasons. Also, she has the lyric "play him like a Kindle" which implies Kindles are mainly for videogames instead of books which is NOT OKAY >:I Selena Gomez does everything Demi wishes she could do, and she does it a million times better.

Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My2FRPA3Gf8)

Miley Cyrus makes (well...made) really good up-tempo songs. Party In The USA is awesome. But this is just overdramatic, "look at me, I can be serious when I want to" drek. I think this song got so popular because of when it was released and the "drama" surrounding the meaning behind the (weak-ass) lyrics. Miley needs to grow her hair back and put on a pair of cowboy boots and leave this part of her career behind her.

Pitbull feat. Ke$ha - Timber (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHUbLv4ThOo)

This song is actually okay aside from...well, Pitbull and Ke$ha. Whoever thought it would be a good idea for Ke$ha to vocalize/yodel for half the song should be shot in the face. And Pitbull has basically been making the exact same types of rap for like 6 years now. Yawn. Country and pop music should be left to T-Swizzle and T-Swizzle alone.

Capital Cities - Safe and Sound (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47dtFZ8CFo8)

The first time I heard this song, I was really confused. I wasn't sure if it was a real song or just like an ad for a bank or something? Those synth horns are TERRIBLE. It sounds like the main inspiration for this song came from the Wave Race 64 soundtracks. Weak vocals too just totally kill this. If you want Michael Buble mixed with LMFAO, then I'm sure this is right up your alley.

Maroon 5 - Love Somebody (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU8B4XDI3Uw)

It's a shame that the band that wrote This Love and Harder To Breathe turned into the Adam Levine Show and devolved into terrible singing with cookie-cutter music behind it. Maroon 5 found a shitty formula and they're going to stick with it. I guess it just goes to show that if you have a cute frontman, it doesn't really what kinda music you make - just make it infectious and plaster his goofy face everywhere and make seventy million dollars.

Florida Georgia Line - Cruise (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmZ9xRO7M9M)

You just really shouldn't overuse autotune on some voices. Like I said before - country mixed with pop/hip-hop or whatever rarely works. It's sad that Nelly's part in this song adds virtually nothing to it but is far and away the best part...and it's not even really that good. Blatant try to make a marketable "summer song" and it just came across as a failed experiment for everyone outside of their target audience.

Pink feat. Nate Ruess - Just Give Me A Reason (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpQFFLBMEPI)

Pink is not a strong vocalist at all, so whoever told her she is for the past couple of years needs to stop it. The part where she and Nate Ruess from fun go back and forth just kinda reminds me of that SNL sketch with Jennifer Lopez and Mango, going back and forth trying to outdo each other. And it's a shame, because fun makes good pop songs! Just...not with Pink. She just sounds like a terrible singer that thinks she sounds like Christina Aguileria.

Pink's "True Love" is another really REALLY bad song from this year, but this one was overplayed way too much.

Rihanna - Stay (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF8BRvqGCNs)

WHAT HAPPENED TO RIHANNA?

She went from a hit-making machine, making one of the best songs of the 00's with Umbrella, but the '10s have not been kind to her. Each time she hits those long, sustained notes on this song, I just cringe because she sounds horrible. Thank God in this song, half of it is by someone who can sing better than Rihanna, because it's a welcome relief. It's just overall a boring song and makes me wish she would just work exclusively with Jay-Z again and make some real pop songs again.

Katy Perry - Unconditionally (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjwZAa2EjKA)

Congratulations to Katy Perry for releasing the worst pop song of the year two years in a row! Despite being the hottest woman in American entertainment, she still cannot sing at all. Autotune can't even help her - and I think she is trying to prove something by not using it so much which is just making things that much worse.

Since she released Firework in 2010, she has tried to recreate the mammoth success of that song but basically re-recording it and re-releasing it under different names. "The One That Got Away," "Part of Me," "Wide Awake." Whatever you want to call it, Katy thinks making melodramatic, "BE STRONG!" songs are better than upbeat, fun party songs which she actually does halfway decent. What I wouldn't give for another "Last Friday Night" or "California Gurls."

Katy Perry is the epitome of being afraid to branch out from safe sounds and until she does, she'll only be a pretty face put to supremely disappointing music.

I think this song got so popular because of when it was released and the "drama" surrounding the meaning behind the (weak-ass) lyrics. Miley needs to grow her hair back and put on a pair of cowboy boots and leave this part of her career behind her.Agreed. I'm not buying the dramatic singing bullshit when the video has her swinging around naked on a wrecking ball fellating a sledgehammer. Sorry, Miley, but you're all about shock these days and you're not fooling anybody by trying to sing the high drama stuff. Also, please keep your stupid tongue in your mouth. It was OK at first, but now it's just getting fucking annoying.

It's a shame that the band that wrote This Love and Harder To Breathe turned into the Adam Levine Show and devolved into terrible singing with cookie-cutter music behind it. Maroon 5 found a shitty formula and they're going to stick with it. I guess it just goes to show that if you have a cute frontman, it doesn't really what kinda music you make - just make it infectious and plaster his goofy face everywhere and make seventy million dollars.I think you're laying it on a bit too thick here. "One More Night" is extremely addicting (which is what pop is really all about, no?), and "Daylight" makes me want to cry like a girl every time I hear it. (OK, maybe I laid it on a little thick myself just there - quid pro quo.)

Pink is not a strong vocalist at all, so whoever told her she is for the past couple of years needs to stop it. Pink's "True Love" is another really REALLY bad song from this year, but this one was overplayed way too much.[/CENTER]While neither one of the songs you mentioned was particularly strong, saying she sucks as a vocalist is taking things a bit too far. She's no Christina, but she's no Demi Lovato either. (Plus, quality of pipes notwithstanding, I'd still hit that in a heartbeat. :D)

WHAT HAPPENED TO RIHANNA?Nothing. She was never that good to begin with.

Katy thinks making melodramatic, "BE STRONG!" songs are better than upbeat, fun party songs which she actually does halfway decent.True, but I thought "Firework" was great, and "Roar" isn't really too bad either.

Her music is fun, but at the end of the day, Rihanna is nothing. Nothing but a label puppet for Def Jam.

Her latest album is nothing but a bunch of reject tracks from previous albums that her label put together in order to put out a new album in 2011. She sounds tired and worn out, like she no longer gives a shit about putting effort into her music.

And I really don't know why I'm talking about this…

TOP 10 POP SONGS OF 2013

http://i43.tinypic.com/vcqb7d.jpg

Macklemore - Same Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQngzapK5dM)

I think it's kind of crazy that a song that is so blatantly in-your-face about wanting equal rights for homosexuals and marriage and how hypocritical some Christians are and slamming the hip-hop community for its ingrained homophobia could rise to the top of the charts. Like I know it's super lame and cheesy but certain music has gotten me interested in political movements and social issues and stuff like that, so I'm all for a super popular song to get the younger generation thinking about stuff like this.

Aside from that, it has a killer hook, a great throwback, almost 60's vibe and great vocals from Mary Lambert. And it has great Macklemore rhymes that aren't overtly in your face like some of his other songs. Macklemore is probably 2013's new artist that had the hugest year. 2014 will be crazy for him.

Also he says "faggot" lololololol

Lady Gaga - Applause (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pco91kroVgQ)

I remember when this came out, there was a big discussion over whether Gaga or Katy Perry had the better single release since this was released so close to "Roar." And honestly - it shouldn't even be a question. Lady Gaga comes back and does what she does best - A self-indulgent, catchy, beat-laden dancefest that puts other pretenders to shame. She's as awesome and as weird as ever. As disappointing as most of the singles from Born This Way were, Applause was a huge relief that Gaga ditched the "drunken ballad" phase of her career and went back to simple catchy pop songs.

The video to this is fucking crazy as well, but isn't that the norm for Godga by now?

Lorde - Royals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlcIKh6sBtc)

The smash breakthrough hit of 2013 by far. Embracing minimalism and simplicity that fools all the hipsters into liking a pure pop song. Lorde is the James Blake of the radio.

I also find it kind of funny that this song got astronomically popular around the same time Britney Spears' "Work Bitch" did. Spears' song is about working hard so you can get all the fancy things in life. Lorde's is saying she doesn't care about the fancy things, never cared about it, and is happy with what she has and where she comes from.

Who will win in the battle of commercialism?! Only 2014 will tell.

also: apparently she was inspire to write this song after seeing a Kansas City Royals jersey on TV!

Justin Timberlake - Take Back The Night (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEzREJbln-o)

One of the best things about pop music in 2013 is that funk is alive and well today. Justin Timberlake channels his inner Michael Jackson more than ever before in this track. A jamming beat and funky bass and strings, Justin even throws some "Break it down, now!" so you know his heart's in the right place. JT's comeback singles have either been just okay or astronomically awesome, and I'm glad that this one is leaning toward the awesome scale of things.

Bruno Mars - Treasure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPvuNsRccVw)

Rolling right along on the Michael Jackson/funk/nu-disco hype train, Bruno Mars crafts one of the funnest pop songs in recent memory. I'm digging the bass on this song so hard, even after hearing it a million times. This song sounds like it was made for Soul Train or something like that - sounds perfect on the shelf alongside my mom's disco and funk albums.

Hopefully Bruno sticks with the up-tempo funkified tunes and less of the ballad-y stuff that isn't quite as good. But I'm excited to see what comes next from him! Just take off that stupid hat you manlet.

Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dls6lgpBDyY)

Before this song, I couldn't have told you a Drake song if you held a gun to my head. But after hearing this one, it was immediately ingrained in my brain and I was hooked. Another extremel minimalist and pretty dark music track and Drake can sing just as good as his peers in Frank Ocean and The Weeknd.

To be honest, the first time I heard this song, the first thing I thought of was "Wow, the influence Odd Future has on current hip-hop is undeniable now." I don't know, I just feel Drake wouldn't make a dark, muted song like this if it wasn't for them. I know it's weird lumping those two in together, but whatevz. This song is sweet.

Passenger - Let Her Go (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBumgq5yVrA)

I am a huge, huge fan of sappy acoustic love songs and I haven't heard a better one than "Let Her Go" in recent years. It's a formulaic pop song about love and loss, but that's what makes it so good. It is the embodiment of what a pop song should be - short, melancholic and sweet.

The singer's voice is kinda weird, but it really fits this style of music. He sounds like Alt-J's singer if Alt-J's singer was a better singer. But yeah, really hoping this isn't a one-hit wonder.

Paramore - Still Into You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OblL026SvD4)

Yay, Paramore is back! Pop punk is back! Well...not really, but this song is still killer! If only other certain popular pop-punk bands had comeback songs like this COUGHCOUGHFALL OUT BOYCOUGH COUGH. But this is power pop perfection for 2013. Paramoe channeled their inner Weezer and made a rocking yet squeaky clean love song that got stuck in everyone's head. Paramore is basically the Hayley Williams show right now, but I don't think anyone's complaining about that.

It also makes me smile really big because this song is about her relationship with Chad from New Found Glory. They are pop punk's royal couple!

Daft Punk - Get Lucky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NV6Rdv1a3I)

In 2001, I was obsessed with Daft Punk. I listened to Discovery so much it's not even funny. I think One More Time and Digital Love and Face to Face and Voyager are some of the best songs ever. I taped Toonami the night it showed Interstella 5555 in its entirety. The first DVD I got on Netflix was Daft Punk's first DVD of just their music videos. I bought Human After All at Border's (remember those?) the day it came out. I remember being kind of freaked out by the weird videos for Technologic and Robot Rock. I downloaded their remix albums and Alive 1997 and listened to them nonstop. I remember the hype that exploded after they played Coachella in 2006 - I downloaded a YouTube video splicing multiple fan videos of the performance into one huge video. I burned a CD of that show and made my parents listen to it on our way to my cousins in St. Louis for Thanksgiving. I remember freaking out when Kanye West sampled Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, getting stoked that more people would know about Daft Punk. I remember scouring the internet to find somewhere to watch their film Electroma, and being really weirded out by it, but loving it. I remember when they announced they were doing the soundtrack to Tron: Legacy and loving their cameo in the movie.

So I was slightly looking forward to this album.

I don't think anyone was prepared for how explosive the lead single turned out to be. It's so weird to me that Daft Punk, this totally weird underground french DJ duo dresses up like robots, is now in the running for Record of the Year at the Grammy's. But I get it - Daft Punk has always championed the glory days of disco and funk, and that's what this album, and this song, is all about. Pharrell's singing is awesome, the vocoder part is great, Nile Rodgers' guitar is great and it's one of Daft Punk's best songs.

Eminem - Berzerk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab9176Srb5Y)

Eminem has released the greatest pop rap song since the Beastie Boys. Hip-hop in 2013 tried way too hard to be obtuse and unapproachable - do these guys think this gives them artistic merit and credibility? Eminem embraces the and makes a banger with a simple drum beat and samples on samples on samples. It's catchy and fun, but Eminem's lyrics are as convoluted and brilliant as ever. Of all the popular rappers in the US, there might not be any as technically gifted as Eminem. "Berzerk" sounds like it was transplanted from the golden age of hip-hop - fans of Run DMC would be proud. I'm really glad Eminem decided to loosen up a bit and have some fun!

Man, when did Paramore get so poppy?

As far as I'm concerned.

Good: Lady Gaga, Lorde, Passenger, Paramore

Meh: JT, Bruno Mars, Daft Punk

No thanks: Macklemore

Couldn't make it through the song: Drake, Eminem

I really liked that Chvrches song, but I only went with songs I heard here on the pop radio stations. I heard the Tegan and Sara song too and I liked it, but not enough to get it here. I do not know those other two bands. You haven't heard Haim? They were pretty huge this year. Check out "Forever" and "If I Could Change Your Mind."

Loved #10, #9, #8. (OK, that Eminem song was pretty good too.)
Hated the rest (yes, that includes Daft Punk - see below for further discussion).
OK, that Passenger song wasn't too bad. It can stay, but fuck the rest.
Haim is the shit for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that they can take a song from your "worst of" list (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FCAzeMXln0) and turn it into something far better than the original.

As far as Daft Punk is concerned, let's just say you (albeit inadvertently) touched a nerve there. I was feeling the first paragraph of your write-up bigtime. I've loved Daft Punk since the beginning.

I was feeling the second paragraph of your write-up as well. I was dying for new Daft Punk, after an eight-year drought that felt more like fifteen.

Then I heard the album, and I threw up in my mouth a little.

Hey, I get it. I grew up during the disco era. I don't care for most disco today (although I do get a bit nostalgic when I hear certain songs that revive some of the better memories of my early youth), but I tolerate its existence as a retro thing that works for some people the way certain early 80's stuff still works for me.

But...et tu, Daft Punk? I mean, draw on it for influence, sure - but did you actually have to try to write a full-on disco album and almost completely abandon the electronic awesomeness that made me fall in love with you in the beginning? Why?!?!?!?

Let's just say that I'm not sure if I'll have a list of disappointments in my 2013 year-end thread or not, but if I do, Daft Punk's new album will be at the very pinnacle of that list. I haven't been punched in the gut so hard by an album in a long time.

All of that said, I get the appeal of the song in question. It's not bad, in and of itself, but it's so much an integral part of a larger disappointment for me that I can't seem to divorce the two no matter how hard I try, and every time I hear the song, I think about the new Daft Punk album full of electronic genius and sick beats that I was expecting, but never came (and perhaps never will again).

Excuse me while I go listen to "Alive 2007" and cry into my pillow.

Influence, fine. Read my post. "Random Access Memories" is a full-on disco album, and that's not OK with me. Plus, where the hell are the BIG, FAT FUCKING BEATS?!?

EDIT: Listen to songs like "Within" and "Touch" and tell me I should have been expecting turds like those based on the songs on Discovery. Negro, no.

The Nat does not boogie.

However, I did like "Giorgio" because it's a tribute to one of the earliest progenitors of electronic music. My parents had his album "From Here to Eternity" when I was a kid and I used to beg them to play it over and over again. :fist:

Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myMdaOz3CQM)

Continuing the movement of bucking nearly everything that made them unlistenable in their startup years, Bring Me The Horizon have made their first really good album. "Sempiternal" is more post-hardcore than deathcore, and they do it much better than they ever did deathcore. It's not a particularly deep album and the lyrics can be ultimately cheesy sometimes, but there's enough here for me to thoroughly enjoy the album. This was the album that spent the most time in my car's CD player, and for that they take the #10 spot. lol look how mad u fagets r over dis pick

Exhumed - Necrocracy

Exhumed makes another solid album proving that they almost out-Carcass Carcass even in their glory days. This album has a bit more grind in it than their last album, which only does amazing stuff for them. Is Exhumed the hardest working band in death metal today? Probably. And it shows!

The Black Dahlia Murder - Everblack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH9VxwZHnw0)

Black Dahlia's best and most complete album since 2007's "Nocturnal." Every album here is an absolute beast, whether it's from the lightning-fast "In Hell Is Where She Waits For Me," the crunching "Phantom Limb Masturbation," or the Morbid Angel-inspired "Into The Everblack," there's something on this album for every fan of death metal. If you haven't taken a look into one of the most consistently awesome "young" American metal bands, now's a great time to hop on the hype train!

Convulse - Evil Prevails (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDv9ZXYKM2w)

Does old-school death metal have the best track record in all of music for band comeback albums? Convulse sound like thy were frozen in time after the release of their last album back in 1994. Painfully heavy and unrelenting in a way that only a classic Scandinavian death metal band can pull off.

Nails - Abandon All Life (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt1gYAMICpc)

The best pissed-off album of 2013. Nails crams all they can into this album that lasts just over 17 minutes - any more and people listening to it might kill someone. For fans of the loudest, fastest, angriest music (and guitar tone) possible. Southern Lord is killing it when it comes to this type of music, and Nails just might do it better than anyone today.

Melt-Banana - Fetch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6cKMDO5fAs)

Kinda the sonic polar opposite of Nails, Melt-Banana is happy and upbeat and just downright weird. These pioneers of noise rock/grindcore/pop/whatever are back with a killer album. "Fetch" is catchy rhythm's one song and the most jarring, time-signature-changing grind song the next, and I wouldn't expect anything less from them. Required listening for any punk!

In Solitude - Sister

The best "occult rock/old-school metal/satan rock" whatever band out there today for sure! Other bands need to stop taking influence from Blue Oyster Cult and Led Zeppelin and more from King Diamond and Mercyful Fate! This is the throwback band for metalheads. Catchy, heavy and supremely evil. "Pallid Hands" is one of the best songs of the year.

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTwGSgJoR6A)

Comeback of the year would be an understatement. Daft Punk is the biggest invisible inspiration for the pop music scene worldwide of the last ten years, and it's about time they got back to showing everyone else how it's done. "Random Access Memories" is full of the glory days of electronic and funk music. The robot duo recruited a bevy of guests for the album, including Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams and Julian Casablancas for its more disco-oriented tracks, but used Paul Williams, Giorgio Moroder and DJ Falcon for some of Daft Punk's best electronica hits ever. This should be the face of pop music for the next decade.

Standout tracks:

Instant Crush (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5uQMwRMHcs)

Deafheaven - Sunbather (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfbLWHT7vUU)

The most talked about "underground" album of 2013 is also one of the best. Deafheaven's blending of the expansive black metal sound established by bands like Wolves In The Throne Room and Weakling with the post-rock and shoegazing elements of My Bloody Valentine and Alcest has created the best metal album of this hard-to-define genre yet. Sometimes, there needs to be a radical departure from the norm to have an artform truly evolve and that brings about lots of criticism and unwillingness to move forward, but it's exactly what Deafheaven has done with this album.

Standout tracks:

The Pecan Tree (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-Dyaoq_oSA)

Magic Circle - Magic Circle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-5RdDRZOoQ)

Out Black Sabbath'd Black Sabbath in Black Sabbath's triumphant return year. It's astounding what a bunch of punk kids (Magic Circle features members of The Rival Mob, Doomriders, Mind Eraser and more) turn to old-school heavy metal - the result would make Tony Iommi weep with joy. The self-titled debut from these monsters is 40 minutes of pure doom worship that would make any fan of Pagan Altar or Pentagram proud. Magic Circle has brought back the occult mysticism that we can only look back on in wonder from the 70s. The album every fan of every metal sub genre should own in 2013.

Standout Tracks:

Actually didn't really check out the new Revocation. Teratogenesis was a great EP, so I'm sure I'll like it.

New Skeletonwitch is good, but I kinda feel like they're stagnating a bit. It's not as good, IMO, as Forever Abomination, but way better than Breathing The Fire, so we'll see if it sits better with me as I listen to it more.
