Wow, didn't see this coming. Though I am not that shock because Joey has said he would like to continue touring with Scar the Martyr and how much he has invested in that band.

Not just talent, but also one of the key driving forces songwriting wise. This isn't like Craig or Chris Fehn got up and left the band. I'm a huge fan, but this has to be the end of the band. With 2 key members now gone, end it on a high note that was the last touring cycle in memory of Paul.

I also wonder if Jim is regretting skipping out on Stone Sour's tour to focus on writing for the next Knot album...

Yeah that's gotta be awkward, I mean a week ago an interview with Joey was up saying he was ready for the new record

Kinda like when Portnoy left Dream Theater, except in this case the band was intact through all their major releases until Paul's passing

I'm not that surprised, he was super distant on Mayhem in 2012. He's always traveled separately and had started showing up literally just minutes before time to go onstage. I saw the rest of the guys out and about all the time, I never saw him once. It was just like a job for him at that point, it felt.

Joey is easily replaced, and this is probably not the end of Slipknot. You're forgetting they still have Jim, Mick, Shawn and Corey who are all capable of writing decent songs. It is a bit shocking, certainly, but not that big a deal if you ask me. Band made it over a decade without a major line up change, this shit happens.

Also, part of me believes this is a PR stunt to gather momentum for an 'original line up' tour in a couple of years.

Steev
12-13-2013, 06:08 AM
As expected fans are already harassing members of Scar The Martyr blaming them.

The band's statement says they're carrying on and will still do a new album next year, so it's clearly not the end of the band.

mastodon421
12-13-2013, 07:08 AM
I'm definitely surprised by this as well but this certainly doesn't mark the end of the band. With so many members in the band contributing to the songwriting, they should be able to pick up the slack without suffering too much. From an actual drumming standpoint, Joey was definitely extremely talented and without a doubt the most skilled musician in the band. That being said, they can find someone that is of the same skill level to take his place. It definitely sucks but they should be able to recover from this loss.

Steev

He's already played with Stone Sour. I wouldn't be surprised, although his tenure with Avenged Sevenfold was ended because the band felt like people focused too much on him.

I hope he banked hard off the last Slipknot touring cycle as he will never see anywhere near that level of income with Scar The Martyr.

I am sure Slipknot will have no problems finding a new drummer. Perhaps they could have one of their other "drummers" step up if they are talented enough - I don't think one less guy pounding on kegs with a baseball bat would take much away from their sound.

Also Slipknot will continue. Joey was really good but replaceable.

It is a bit shocking, certainly, but not that big a deal if you ask me. Band made it over a decade without a major line up change, this shit happens.

In terms of replacing his techinical ability, I'm not doubting he can be replaced in that regard. There are a shit load of drummers who are as or more talented than him that could replicate his drumming on their past material. That's not necessarily the concern. The songwriting aspect is a huge deal here. And yes, I know there are other writers in the band, but Joey was probably the biggest contributor. And besides, do you really want Clown to do more writing? Have you heard his side projects? No thank you.

It's also a matter of if they will want to replace him. They still haven't officially replaced Paul Gray yet, and didn't even let Donnie Steele play on stage with them despite being an original member during the Mate Feed Kill Repeat days. That being said, a death is obviously tougher to deal with than a member leaving, and they've replaced members in the past as recent as the Self-titled album recording. And finding a permament replacement on drums is probably more important music-wise than finding a permanent bassist. Still, the cynical part of me can still see the band hiring some session drummers for the recording, and some random metal dude for the live performances who they'll try to obscure a bit.

that was a relatively short notice fill in date in between mayhem and the heavy fests though. i would imagine plenty of their new england fans had already blown money on mansfield or hartford mayhem tix long before, if not picked those because they obviously had way more bands.

They did ampitheaters last year after Mayhem
they did two ampitheatres after mayhem, the aforementioned meadowbrook, which at the time definitely constituted as a small one. the NJ one was huge though obviously.

ampitheatres wildly vary in size, so its hard to debate if they are a band who could realistically pull off playing them. the ones in the 10,000-20,000 range, im thinking not outside of a festival tour package.

i think slipknot could probably still draw fine in 5,000ish small arenas.

To my fans, friends, and associates...

I would like to start the New Year by addressing the recent rumors and speculation regarding my departure from Slipknot. I want to make it very clear that I DID NOT QUIT SLIPKNOT. This band has been my life for the last 18 years, and I would never abandon it, or my fans. This news has shocked and blindsided me as much as it has all of you. While there is much I would like to say, I must remain silent to further details at this time. Guitarist Jim Root has been fired from STONE SOUR, the group fronted by Root's SLIPKNOT bandmate Corey Taylor.

STONE SOUR has released the following statement regarding the matter: "As some of you might have heard by now, STONE SOUR and Jim Root have indeed parted ways. We were trying to wait until the completion of the new SLIPKNOT album, but in light of recent events, we are going to confirm this information and move on. We feel it's best for both bands and hope that is reflected in the days to come. We will give you more information when the time comes."

Taylor added in a separate tweet: "Jim and I are still working together in SLIPKNOT and the album is almost done."
