They're one of my favorite bands, but this album is probably only their fourth best out of five. Which, at #20 out of hearing easily 750+ albums this year, is still very fucking excellent.

I go back and forth on that Phossy record a bit because "Song for Zula" is SO, SO GOOD, but a few of the other tracks are duds if I'm not in the mood. Ultimately though I spent a ton of time listening to it this year and #12 feels about right.

Especially some of the non-metal picks (The Hunt, Nick Cave, Phosphorescent, and Pharmakon) really nice diverse list.
The metal picks are top notch as well. Especially that Darkthrone album, best old school heavy metal album to drop this year.

Screw drama, haha. Here's the rest of the list. Sorry for my lazy performance, but I hope some of you found some new stuff to check out. This was an incredible year for music for me, and if I went through and listed every album I at least considered for my top 20 this year, it would probably have at least 200 albums. This is the best of the best but there's so much good stuff from 2013 that you shouldn't sleep on. Also ditching the RIYLs for this last group, because you should check them out no matter who you are or what else you like, and also because when you're operating on a high enough level to make records like these, you're not the sum of influences anymore. You're doing you.

So, without further ado...

You might be roots music/country/folk-ed out living there, but it's an incredibly earnest, heart-wrenching album with the best lyrics I've heard in years. On top of that, Jenks Miller (Horseback, solo drone stuff) is their guitarist and his isolated guitar lines on here would probably STILL be my AOTY. Get on it, dude. ;)

All these different types of music and no Earth Rocker?

It's good, but like I said, I loved hundreds of albums this year. Didn't really stand a chance once I started whittled it down to 20. Honestly, I think Clutch needs to get their weirdness back. The last couple just haven't had that same x-factor as their best albums. The only thing on the new one that really approached the kind of no-one-else-could-do-this thing they had going on their classics is "DC Sound Attack!" with that go-go beat, but a lot of the record is just a hard rock album with Neil singing. Even his lyrics aren't very weird anymore. Off my soapbox, but as good as Earth Rocker was at times, it doesn't sniff the s/t, Elephant Riders, PRF, Blast Tyrant, Robot Hive or Beale Street.

Yeah I liked it then Gone Gold grabbed me. Once that song sunk in the rest of the cd just clicked for me. It's Top 3 Clutch for me and after Strange Cousins which I couldn't get into at all, I was happy to see them put out such a masterpiece.

The fact that some people on here had Strange Cousins in their Top 10 but don't like Earth Rocker is crazy to me. To this day I only like 2 songs off Strange Cousins and like every song on ER with only the title track being a little weird/annoying because of the chorus to me.

DC Sound Attack & Gone Cold are 2 of the 5 best songs of 2013 for me...

I've always liked that style of music despite it being so popular here. I just think there's quantitatively less music of that style that's written in a way that I enjoy and latch onto. It's a matter of songwriting, not sound.

I will listen to that album before the end of the year.

Word. I mostly agree with you. It's the kind of music that I can definitely pass the time with any day, and would usually go see live if someone asked me, but that rarely burrows deep in my brain and makes me want to spend a lot of time with it. Mount Moriah is one band who I definitely like spending a lot of time with. Another, from a completely different angle (though also from NC I believe) is Hiss Golden Messenger.

So I listened to Almost every album of this list... You my good sir have exceptional variation in taste.

I loved a quite a few (Blood Ceremony, The Men, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds primarily), and enjoyed all the others and will give them some more listens.
The only ones that did not do much for me were Wrekmeister Harmonies (a bit too much minimalism for my taste), Power Trip (its solid, but I bet they would be phenomenal live), Phosphorescent (loved a couple songs, (loved "Terror in the Canyons" and "The Quotidian Beasts") dosed off for the rest, not bad, just not my thing). Either way phenomenal list! The ones not mentioned are ones that I enjoyed and I will listen to them again but the three I mentioned initially were my, "holy fuck this is fantastic" albums. I also already owned Sunbather so I left that out of the really enjoyed list.

Nice, glad you found some cool stuff! If you liked that Men record, you need Open Your Heart and Leave Home (both a lot more punk/hardcore leaning, but both better than New Moon) and you're definitely gonna love the one that drops in March: http://pitchfork.com/news/53187-the-men-announce-new-album-tomorrows-hits/

For Nick Cave, likewise, if you haven't explored his discography, start working your way back from The Boatman's Call and Murder Ballads. Those are probably his best, and everything before them rules as well. The new one was a total return to form, though. Love it.

I still haven't given Mount Moriah a proper listen, but I just want to say again how outstanding that album cover is.

It's mesmerizing. Given Jenks Miller's black metal background too, I wouldn't be surprised if it's meant as an homage to Aske.

Actually I own Open Your Heart, and I agree it is superior to New Moon, but I still thoroughly enjoyed New Moon for different reasons albeit maybe not as much as Open Your Heart. Does that make any sense?

However, I have never listened to Leave Home so I will check this one out.

Also as a side note some of the death metal albums (Portal, Vastum, Carcass) have grown on me even more! So your list is increasingly magnanimous in albums I wish to own.

Got it. I totally agree with you there. New Moon is such a different experience that it's tough to quantify its pleasures on the same scale as their past work. Tomorrow's Hits is even EVEN more different, love that fucking band.

Glad you're digging the DM stuff. This was the best year for death metal in God knows how long. I could have easily had several other records on my list (Autopsy, Abyssal) too.

:party:Really glad to see someone else giving this album some props. I thought it was a great record. Saw the guys open for Intronaut this summer and they were the nicest most humble dudes. I hope they can pick up some momentum and get the recognition they deserve.

Late replying, but I just saw them headline last night and it was incredible. Their first show with a new bassist but they played the entire Sky Swallower record and sounded great.

easily 750+ albums this year, is still very fucking excellent.

Do you work, or have family, or do............anything?

I mean no disrespect or ill will. That's just, wow.

Work IS music, so that's a big part of it.

Devourment.

No way. I think I'm the only person in the world who liked their new album. I think I read in the 2013 thread that you liked it, so maybe there are two of us.

Oh my bad, I didn't know. Again, I meant no disrespect. That's just an insane amount of music to listen to in one year's time.

Agreed, but yeah, my two gigs are working for a label and writing about metal, so it doesn't strike me as too much. :) No offense taken.

Sounds like an enjoyable line of work!
