So I ended up going to the public premier last night in SF since one of my friends friends bailed, James showed (as advertised) and said a few things while people took pictures.
It seems like every concert film has a different concert to film ratio. This one was a little more concert than I was expecting from the advertising.
I saw it in Imax 3D, so the picture and sound couldn't get any better. As a concert (film) alone, it was by far the best thing I've ever seen. Every view, angle and close up you could imagine and more.
I figure a lot of you guys will be seeing it at some point so I'll go into spoiler mode.

To me, the whole "movie" outside of the show was a spectacle to keep you sort of engaged while you're sitting down for a 90 minute concert in a movie theater. It was surreal, confusing and ultimately pointless. The cliffhanger (no pun intended) was really stupid, really shoved in there as something for everyone to talk about on the way out.

I'm going to see it tonight in IMAX, my roommate bought me a ticket. I know its going to be cheesy as fuck, but I can't wait to see it.

This movie looks like the dumbest thing, probably ever. They should have just released a concert film and left it at that. S'not like Metallica fans wouldn't have just lapped that shit up. Will be giving it a big miss and just buying the soundtrack.

Not even the dumbest thing Metallica ever did. Lulu, anyone?

But that album answered everyones question as to "Who was the table?"

Winner of the thread right here. I just saw it tonight and I was pretty impressed. The concert portions were brilliantly-shot and the band sounded great. The "storyline" thankfully doesn't take up much time and is completely pointless. The music is so strong that I can gloss over the stupidity of the subplot. Definitely worth-seeing if you like Metallica in any capacity.

Just got back from seeing it. Musically it was great, but there was a lot of Plot holes and things that could have easily been taken care of with better writing. The story, yeah like everyone else said is pretty pointless, but it adds a different dimension you wouldn't have gotten with other Concert Movie.

Was it bad? No. Was it amazing? No. Is it worth seeing? at least once, even if it is to go all Mystery Science Theater during the whole thing.

My dad and I saw it tonight; so pretty much the same as everyone has said, the concert part is great, the "movie" part is lame and really pulls down the overall product. I felt like the balance was way out of wack in terms of the concert vs the movie; for example at the start, Creep, Bellz and Fuel are played which total roughly 15-20 minutes, but the movie footage only pops in for a total of 2 minutes and all it is the kid driving

and movie you are not deep like Citizen Kane you cannot tease "what's in the bag? Wooooooooo" and not show what it is; for all I know it could have been a giant shit from the horse in the movie

In the end, the kid lights himself on fire, pretends he is Thor and yet he doesn't share with us what he smoked to achieve those hallucinations?

Overall I loved the concert footage the 3D was there and not overbearing; in fact I would be more interested in getting the DVD if they released just the whole show. But alas they won't and the "movie" really brings this down for me

6.5/10

Yeah in the theater somebody shouted "IT'S FULLA DRUGS", later I saw someone online said it's Lulu, which is why he got sick when he saw it.

Damn that makes a lot sense, so the horsemen and his posse were kind Metallica fans trying to destroy the bag and prevent horrible death on the world.

Well they failed; good job fans
