So someone I know posted one of those "You know what I hate?" comments on Faceache today... which got me thinking... we don't have a thread for that!

Clearly we need one.

Along the same lines (because they tend to be the same kind of people): people who think USPM is the greatest thing ever and that the modern European stuff sucks. What annoys me most about these people is that whenever someone asks for suggestions for power metal bands (see: Reddit and Metal Archives) they immediately assume they're talking about USPM, when that's not at all a logical assumption.

For the record, I like both styles, but the hatred that modern power metal gets is ridiculous.

I hate the fact that you people call indicators "blinkers". It's like a company put them on a car for the first time decades ago, some redneck said "ur-hurh, it's blinking!", and it stuck.

I'll keep my first post here short but I'll be back with more; since we are taking about driving:

Turn Signals: My #1 pet peeve when driving is A) people don't use them and either make a sudden turn or join your lane without warning

BUT

I hate it even more when people turn them on, then leave them on; I don't get it in most cars these days you got the clicking noise plus the flashing on your dashboard yet in our ADD world that doesn't phase some people.

and.....there are still people in this world that leave their headlights off...at night..ya sure we have all made the mistake of being in a hurry and forgetting but I saw one person at 10 PM, pitch black pull out of a street with no lights on....for 20 minutes....and this was outside the city lights.

Doesn't apply to the ones about "people who only listen to chart hits". I actually hate when people have no appreciation of the fact that other people enjoy things that aren't to their tastes and that's OK.

But I do hate the chart music thing too. It's not because chart hits are almost always songs I don't like. I hate that these people are a) that fucking lazy, and b) that closed off to what's out there.

Really though, the fact that they only listen to chart music is just a by-product I suppose. I'm sure they apply the same laziness and closed off attitude to other areas of their life as well, and it's those attitudes I guess we all hate. They just come onto our personal radar when it comes to the music thing because that's what we all care most about.

Definitely. I buy both these days, but only buy vinyl when it's appropriately priced, and usually only when it's a favourite album, or it's exclusively on vinyl. CD is still the perfect middle-ground medium.

Conversely, I hate people who only buy digital music. Not as much as I hate people who don't pay for music at all, but nearly.

I buy mostly digital music because: a) I don't have access to places were CD's are sold all the time, and b) because most of the music I want to buy is either not sold here or is impossible to find.Trust me, if I was able to get all my albums that I want on CD, I would. That said I do buy CD's when I can and I have about 30 of them.

Dude... order online.

Yeah, this. Seriously, nothing you buy is remotely rare or expensive. And online it's probably even cheaper than in stores.

not rare yuh? How about you try to find Wings Of Tomorrow, Hall Of The Mountain King, Nightfall In Middle-Earth, or Rest In Sleaze (the albums I want) in a record store here in Georgia.Georgia has no record stores that sell underground metal/rock albums, at least none that I've found.

And I know that the CDs I want are not expensive, but all my income comes from my birthday, Christmas, and an occasional paying gig, so that's the only time I am able to buy CD's (except for when my parents decide to buy some for me if the CDs are low priced at a Walmart or Best Buy).Using iTunes is the only way I can get a sure fire album right when I purchase it.Now, when the album I want isn't on iTunes (like Rest in Sleaze), then there is a problem.

It was Amazon that took that long? Things rarely take 4 weeks to get to me from the US, and Canada's customs is notoriously slow. I'd say you got unlucky; I'd give it another shot. I would imagine Amazon would generally deliver faster than anywhere else because they process everything really quickly as long as it is in stock.

I guess so but if I get it on iTunes I still get it don't I? anyway like Spiner said I will give it another shot the next time I have money to spend (which won't be very soon, got Music Midtown tickets I still need to buy). And it didn't take all the CD's to get to me in that long, it just took 3-4 weeks to get them ALL, the first one came in about 5 days, the last one came in about the end of the 3rd week or the beginning of the 4th week (can't quite remember).

Edit: Wait I just remembered I bought them used and not ACTUALLY from Amazon because I couldn't afford to get it from Amazon last time, so I got 5 used ones for 3-10$ but the ones from Amazon either were out of stock, or were like 10-15$.

Anyone who rules out an entire, varied industry because of one bad experience, is an idiot.

Physical products require availability. Duh.

What you're basically saying is, you got everything you ordered, but you're too impatient to wait for it. The fault is with you, not online retail.

adamclark52
08-10-2013, 04:50 PM
You don't realize how lucky you are with online retail. In the early 1990s I had to order Black Sabbaths 'Paranoid' on CD BY MAIL! It took three months, was coming from oversea, I had no way to track it, had to pay by money order (which meant anyone could've opened the envelope and taken the money) and I never knew if it was even coming. But it did and it was worth it.

What I'm saying is it's so much easier, and faster, today. Christ, I've ordered stuff off Amazon, changed my mind ten minutes later, gone to cancel it and been unable to because they already shipped it!

And if you look under every title it'll say (for example) "ships in 1 to 2 days", "ships in 3 to 4 weeks". Everytime. They even taking mailing into account and on your order summary they'll tell you, within a few days, when it will be in your hands. So you can't blame Amazon for shipping it exactly when they told you they would.

People in this digital age are just too impatient.

I prefer physical media because I get a hard-to-explain sense of satisfaction from it, but since we're no longer living in a time period where 128kbps is effectively the max you can have a decent amount of music on your 20gb hard drive, the argument that CDs sound better is nonsense.

1. 320k MP3s aren't sold through iTunes, Amazon or what have you. Those are usually 192-256k if I remember right. Basically the only ways you're gonna get 320k MP3s are illegal downloads or ripping the CD yourself.

2a. FLAC also isn't sold through most digital retailers. Again, gotta pirate or rip the CD.

2b. FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec. MP3 is an inherently lossy format. What is this "FLAC mp3" you speak of? I want no part of it!

2c. FLAC is more or less a zipped WAV file. Meaning that it is the same data as is on a CD. So yes, you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between a FLAC file and a CD going through the same signal path, because they're the same damn thing.

Now that the semantics are cleared up, the truth is yes, 90% of people can't tell the difference between a high-quality MP3 (192k+) and a lossless file, especially given how low-fi basically everyone's listening setups tend to be these days (small computer speakers, earbuds and an iPod etc). On good equipment in a quiet environment the difference is absolutely discernible though. There is nothing that sounds better than an all-analog engineered vinyl LP going through a great hi-fi stereo. Not even the highest quality digital tracks (the 192k/24bit stuff that's been released on Blu-Ray recently) can match that.

Its interpretation of "most recent" posts is "a random hodgepodge of posts from the last week in no particular order." You have to refresh like three times to actually have the most recent stuff show up in order.

And the regular site is terribly designed, unintuitive, and makes it impossible to change any kind of settings (though, in the case of privacy settings, this is probably on purpose).

Yeah, there was nothing wrong with the original layout. But the thing that bothers me the most now is that at times there are pages popping up that are "talking" about something you "like", say, about a band.

That, and those stupid games, whom I thankfully blocked...rather quickly.

I guess I can expand that whine into all social media sites that change their layout, design, or major features constantly just as you're getting used to the last change. I hate the fact that you people call indicators "blinkers". It's like a company put them on a car for the first time decades ago, some redneck said "ur-hurh, it's blinking!", and it stuck.

It's bad enough you name them after a dumb analogy, but it isn't even the right analogy!

If you want to use the official terminology, they're called turn signals.

How can you possibly say that? How can you know for certain that you'll never like a whole genre of music? You have absolutely no idea where your interests will lie in five years. That's incredibly stubborn, immature thinking. In five years you probably won't even listen to the same music you enjoy now; to think anything to the contrary is just short-sighted.

I don't like rap, you don't understand it just doesn't have any elements I like, none, EL ZIPPO.It's not like it is with a genre of metal or rock were it has elements I actually like, this is a genre that I am 99% sure will never grow on me.Mark my words, I will never listen to a rap song ever again on purpose.Call me dumb, call me stubborn, call me an idiot, but that is how it is.In 5 years if I don't listen to the music I listen to now and transfer to rap I will definitely let you know and you can insult me all you want (and I still won't care).

Because throughout the '70s and '80s, when immigration from middle eastern countries to England increased, particularly from Pakistan, it was most common for any families with a bit of money to run a corner shop, newsagents, or liquor store.

And because it wasn't really considered racist at the time, they were generally referred to as "Paki Shops".

Incorrect, you didn't get the point of the sentence.I'd never heard a melodeath song six months ago, but when I listened to it I liked it, and I never said I hated before I did.I've heard PLENTY of rap songs (way more than I would have liked to), and I've decided that it is just not a genre that I can like.I've also tried to listen to rap metal, not my thing either.Musically some of it is pretty good, but the rap part ruins it completely.Bottom line, I hate rapping.

No, no. I got your point. I just ignored it because it's irrelevant.

The only relevant point is the one everyone here is trying to make and you're stubbornly refuting. Which I don't blame you for, because absolutely every teenager worldwide, all of us included when we were younger, does the exact same thing with all of their opinions.

Fact is your views WILL change, your tastes WILL change, and you absolutely cannot say you will never like something, because you, we, and everyone else simply do not know that. It may turn out to be the case, it may not. But you don't know that. All you know is that you haven't previously liked any rap songs, and you currently don't like any rap songs.

Indeed. I know I'll never be a pop fan because unless the general asthetic of pop music changes a LOT, I'll never like enough of it to be a fan, but that's not to say there won't be occasional pop songs I like. Same as I don't like most indie I've ever heard, but there are occasional songs I like.

You can be pretty certain that you'll never be a proper fan of a genre, but to say you will always hate every aspect of it is both stupid and patently untrue.

Didn't say I didn't like pop, I actually like a couple of current pop songs, sometimes even a whole album, I won't say I hate pop.I will change my statement about rap to this: I will continue to hate it until I gain an interest in rapping, which most likely won't happen, but I won't say it WILL NOT happen, I just really REALLY highly doubt that I will ever be able to gain a taste for rapping. So yea, I hate The Beastie Boys because I don't like their music and cringe every time I here it (not saying I hate the actual band members, just the music they create).

Anyway, here's some other things I hate: People who listen (or act like they listen) to popular metal/rock bands just to seem cool, and people who only listen to underground metal/rock bands and hate other metal/rock bands that are popular just because they are popular because they think it's cool.

I agree with you on this, I've been playing for 6 years and I can only do very basic sweep picking, but even when I do learn to sweep pick very well I definitely know that's not the end of the road, there's still LOTS of techniques and hundreds of different scales to learn.I've met quite a few people that think that sweep picking makes you the master of the guitar.

It is here too. And not just when you pay on the door. Almost all venues in London do the same thing for ticket collections too.

The only way to get a real ticket is have it posted, sometimes at a very high price, and even then sometimes they'll discover they won't have the tickets available in time and switch everyone to door collection (without refunding the postage, of course) and no one gets a ticket.
