I see maybe two movies a year in cinemas these days. Used to be two a month.

I've seen three 3D movies ever. Underwhelming and not worth the money. As has happened every time in the past, the 3D gimmick will die, until next time they try to do it.

Yeah, even back then I'd never do that. There just aren't that many movies worth seeing.

And with cinema prices vs DVD prices, that just wouldn't make sense anyway.

I can go see a movie for $5, usually if I go see two back to back it still only costs me $5

Yeah, that's ridiculously cheap. It'd cost you 4 times that here. Well, maybe twice that if you go on student rates during off-peak times etc.

Yeah the huge chain movies here are AMC Theaters and monday - thursday before 6pm and the first few showing on sat and sunday morning are $5 a ticket. If its IMAX or 3D it's like a extra $3 during that time period. They always get the 2D versions of movies though and its a extremely nice theater. Plus I only go to the movies during week days.

The last new movie I saw in theaters was Shutter Island. A decent movie, but easily Scorsese's worst.

The last movie in general I saw in theaters was Jurassic Park in IMAX this past April for the 20th Anniversary. Never gets old.

Still, fuck the theater in general. No movie in the past 3 years has gotten me so excited that I couldn't wait another 4 months to get the Blu-Ray from Netflix.

If I'm willing to go to the nearest theaters, they charge like $9 - $12 a ticket depending on what I'm seeing or how new it is, so I'll only do that if I really, really want to see something or if I tag along with someone.

Otherwise, I just wait about a month or so and go to a theater about half an hour away from me that plays the movies after the mainstream theaters are done with them, since it has tickets for dirt cheap and the management doesn't really care if you see another movie starting after the first one ends if you time it right. Last summer, I got to see The Dark Knight Rises and Dredd (the only movie with 3D effects that I actually thought enhanced the movie) for $1.50 since they ended and began within ten minutes of each other.

The food prices are about the same though, so I just never bother with that shit.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH CALLING IT POP!?!?!?

You know funny thing is I thought it was purely a Canadian thing and that Americans unanimously called it "Soda" (or "Sowder" if you're from New Jersey), but apparently a huge portion of the Southeast US calls it "pop" as well.

I suppose so. I used to hate hardcore dancing with a terrible passion. But then I started going/playing a ton of shows in the hardcore scene around(which by the way, is pretty fucking awesome for being in the midwest) and I just see it way differently now. Still irks me when I hear the hardcore kids talking shit on regular ol' moshing.

Exactly. Down here nobody calls it pop. I lived in Oregon and Washington state and pretty much everyone calls it pop up there, no one refers to it as soda. When I moved back here in 93' it took awhile to get used to calling it soda.

Why didn't I think of this sooner? DIGITAL DOWNLOADS. Cherry picking only certain songs off of an album instead of getting the entire thing is straight blasphemy. I never understood wanting to pay for MP3 files only.... if you're gonna spend the money on an album, why not get a hard copy? I guess everyone doesn't enjoy collecting CDs/vinyl, but they should damnit!

ALSO: People like my friends who claim to have "so many CDs" but 90% of them are burned copies and half of those aren't even actual albums but instead shitty mixes.

Yuck.

Digital downloads are more convenient, especially when you have to pay extra for imported CD's.I always make it a priority to buy whole albums on iTunes though, if I have a couple of bucks left over I'll buy single songs I like of an album and most likely will buy the rest of it when I get the money again.

You're right about the convenience and the price tag for sure, I just sincerely enjoy having a physical copy with the artwork, insert, CD/vinyl, etc. I'm on the fringe of being an obsessive collector too so that doesn't help my cause when I'm trying to save money. I just love it, though!

I am the same way. If I walk into a record store when I have barely enough money to cover the shit I actually need to cover, there is a big chance I will spend money I shouldn't. But I just love physical copies so much :bliss:

Indeed! Glad to hear someone else out there shares the same addiction that I do. Local record shops have been my wallet's downfall the past few years, as I ALWAYS end up spending more than I wanted to. On the flip side it's made me beyond orgasmic to find some of the things I've found. And that's another thing.... I enjoy just browsing through stacks of vinyl and shitting myself in glee when I find something amazing. Last year I stumbled upon a record shop I didn't know about and upon my first visit I found an original copy of Mercyful Fate's Melissa. Just about had a heart attack. Needless to say that's now my go-to guy for metal vinyl. Ugh, is it pay day yet? I hate not having money!

That's one of the main reasons I just buy on iTunes, because I rarely am able to visit a really good CD store, and if I order them it takes longer. In the end I just want to be able to listen to my music, if I am able to get the CD then that's great but otherwise I'm not going to neglect something that's more convenient. The only good CD store in Georgia I've been to is way up north, and that's where I bought most of my Journey CD's, and I occasionally find something good in Walmart's and Best Buy's $5 selection.

Funny enough best record store I've ever been to was in Downtown Disney, the place was HUMONGOUS with two whole floors of nothing but CD's and Vinyl of every genre you can think of, and pretty much any band you can think of.First time I went there I remembered having to choose one of like 5 Stryper CD's, second time had to choose one CD of KISS's entire catalog, and remembered seeing all Winger's stuff including the Heading For A Heartbreak single. It was like 8 years ago though, don't know if it's still there, but if it is I would love to go back.

When people don't sync and combine songs properly on their iPods. Example, someone who has (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth and Whiplash as two tracks, so when they put their iPods on random you get a song that seems to end halfway through or start halfway through. I always combine tracks that merge together, even if I'm left with a twenty minute song rather than four five minute songs.

"Your" bars? Canadian beer is not American beer. You can find a shitload of beers better than fucking Bud in any bar I would go to. By the same token, I've been to lots of bars in the US as well and I don't think I've ever been reduced to ordering a Bud. You're going to the wrong bars.

There was a point a couple years ago where I saw a ton of Lawrence/KC hardcore bands and I thought most of them really sucked and the fans were all assholes who would rather pick fights than have a good time. I actually avoided a few shows just because I didn't want to deal with them.

Indeed I do. Been to four cities so far and the story has been similar in each.

Some places had Samuel Adams, but since England is packed with Samuel Adams pubs, which only serve their stuff, I wasn't it much of a hurry to get any as we have it here. When in Rome, and all that.

There is a pretty diverse music scene there, including lots of metal.
The food is fucking ridiculously good.
Kuma's Corner (which is a perfect combination of the first two items)
Several fairly good record stores exist there.
The architecture of the city is awesome.
It's a big city, but it's way cleaner than New York and / or LA.
Lots of good sports related stuff to do (Cubs, Bulls, Blackhawks, etc.).
If you time the visit right, I will convince the wife it's time to go see her family and I will meet up with you and give you a much-needed ass-kicking.

Definitely go to Kuma's (2900 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL). It's a metal themed restaurant.

Also, adding to those:

Susie's Drive-in (4126 W Montrose Ave Chicago, IL)

Lockdown Burger (poor man's Kuma's Corner, but with a more diverse menu and less dick rules) (1024 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL)

Jim's Original (if you want to have a real Chicago style hotdog) (1250 S Union Ave Chicago)

Also, if you're there on a Tuesday, Reggie's (2105 S State St, Chicago, IL) is worth checking out. They have 25 cent wings on Tuesday, plus there's a pretty neat record store upstairs called Record Breakers.

Reckless RecordsReckless is the most well-known and most established joint, but there are others as well. Laurie's Planet of Sound is pretty awesome, and there's a damn decent store attached to Reggie's as well.

Speaking of which, a few decent metal venues to Google before you make your trip are Reggie's, Metro, Subterranean, The Empty Bottle, Bottom Lounge, Ultra Lounge and EXIT. These are where most of the punk / metal acts that come through town stop (aside from the larger commercial joints like HOB or the Riviera for major acts).

The Squared Circle (wrestling restaurant) I don't know anything about the Squared Circle, but those other joints are teh tits ( . )( . ) :rocker:

Also, you have to get either some Italian beef or a Chicago style dog while you're in the area. Al's Beef has both (although their beef is better than their dogs), and they have locations all over the city. My favorite is the one right across from Gino's East on W. Ontario at Wells. There are so many great hot dog places it's impossible to recommend just one. Google that shit and decide for yourself, based on your travel plans. Most of them are far better than anything you've ever had outside of Chicago, so you basically can't go wrong. I personally like Murphy's Red Hots and Hot Doug's.

Finally, if you're in a more discerning mood and have the cash, Chi-town has a lot of excellent steak places. I recommend the Chicago Chop House (which, incidentally, is two blocks east of Al's Beef and Gino's East on W. Ontario).

I am going to hit Reckless Records on Wisconsin Ave. The Misfits show I'm going to is pretty close and it's open until 8pm on Sundays. And their website shows them having a lot of used Sonic Youth albums.

It's a pretty simple situation. When it comes to the big bands, the US gets the best support packages, but probably overall fewer tours because of the European festival circuit.

When it comes to smaller bands, the US gets the best tours for the bands which are American, Europe gets the best tours for the bands which are European. No one gets tours for bands from elsewhere.

This. Dublin get's good headlining shows because bands do off dates on festivals. UK gets good packages, Ireland gets maybe half of those, if even. There is more variety in Europe's line ups because of the festivals, but Europe as a whole isn't much better than the states. We have the festivals, but after that, there's still 'B' territories where shows don't generally go, and there's still ridiculous money in getting bands from a to b to play shows.

That's what I put up with...every day. Try to explain electrical (I'm an electrician) to someone who literally maybe doesn't even know how to screw in a light-bulb.

For you guys who've never worked in construction or the service industry: I can liken it to a band getting someone who's never picked up a guitar to play guitar for them. And not a band that plays three chord music. Imagine if Nevermore hired someone who's never picked up a guitar in his life to replace Jeff Loomis. That's the guy who's running this site.

I got (what I am guessing is) food poisoning there for the second time after eating their chicken. Never eating there again, and if I do, i'm sticking with Black Forest Ham :bouville:
I think Subway is great and all (as far as fast food is concerned), but damn they have some of the the worst chicken ever. Never got why people had that, I usually just have turkey myself and have never had a problem with it.

Yeah, that's what I meant, and after about a second of research I can't believe I didn't know its origin.

It's ironic the "keep calm and carry on" posters were never circulated, because that's exactly what the Brits did in WWII.

So are the shirts supposed to take on the same meaning as the poster? Or is it just a trendy phrase ran amok?

Seeing a band onstage that is shitty, you know is shitty and yet you see everybody else around you losing their mind for such a shitty band. Makes me feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone and I think that I'm the only one hearing what is really going on stage.

Examples I can think of right off hand:

Odd combination and some might laugh. I went to a show in Springfield, MO about 10 years ago to see Andrew WK. Who come to find out didn't headline. The headliner for this show was fucking Hoobastank. I was not the driver so I had to sit through a goddamn set from Hoobastank before The Reason song blew up. I stood there hating life while I think I was feeling the floor moving.

Being at Rockfest in KC w/ 40k people going batshit crazy for Shinedown who I think I started hating even more than I did before, while I waited for STP to get on stage.

I'm sure I have more but those 2 always come to mind immediately.

Peope who leave gigs early.

Sure there could be one or two people who think the band suck and just go home, or who were only their for the support, or live somewhere with a bit of a shitty transport service and need to make the last train or something. I've done all of those things, albeit less than 10 times total.

But people who watch the entire show, then leave before/during the encore/last song. For a lot of gigs I do often make my way to the back (or wherever the exit is) so that I can make a quick getaway as soon as the final song is done, but last night I did that at Paradise Lost and easily 200-250 turned round and walked out as soon as they started playing the last song. And given that there were only about 1000 people there, that's a pretty significant proportion.

The Brit is actually kind of right... It's all about timing. If you don't want to stand in line, go late and miss the opener. Either that or wear your coat and stand at the back. I don't think I've ever checked my coat at a show... I either dress just warm enough not to die outside, or I stand at the back with my coat in one hand and a beer in the other.

ravenheart
11-10-2013, 09:23 AM
Indeed. The concept of paying someone to hang a coat up bemuses me entirely.

And I never queue either, if I can possibly help it. I just arrive for the first band I want to see, whether that's the first opener or not. Very rarely are they on so soon after doors that the queue hasn't gone by that point. The only place I do queue is Brixton Academy, because it is absolutely impossible to get a good spot to watch from if you don't.

Incidentally, what I notice most people do when faced with the cold outside, warm inside problem is wearing a thinner jacket, with a hoodie or similar underneath. Then once inside they remove the jumper, tie it round their waist, and put the jacket back on again. Seems to work for most people, although perhaps even that many layers may not be enough in a Canadian winter?

Of course, I suppose there's no escaping the heat in a gig no matter the weather if you're the kind of fan who insists on being in the crush down the front?

Alduin
11-10-2013, 10:09 AM
Its 3 bucks Im willing to spend. Its not so bad not having a jacket once Im at the venue, but its all the waiting around for buses and trains and cabs etc before I even get to the venue that gets me. Plus I can talk the person doing the coatcheck into holding on to my merch for me most of the time which comes in handy. My buddy has had all his merch stolen cause he had the genius idea of leaving it in a dark corner unattended :tp: Id really rather that not happen to me
