CORMORANT Announce New Bassist/Vocalist; New Album Plans Revealed

Hot Flashes

Posted on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 16:13:43 EST

Bay Area progressive black/death/traditional metal alchemists CORMORANT are preparing to enter Trakworx Studio in South San Francisco to record the follow-up to 2011’s Dwellings.

Recording, mixing and mastering will once again be handled by Justin Weis (AGALLOCH, SLOUGH FEG, HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE) and is scheduled to begin in September. The band's third LP will further explore the black metal and doom influences found on Dwellings and will also mark the first appearance of new bassist/vocalist Marcus Luscombe (VENGINCE, ex-CLOAKWHEEL), who has joined the fold upon the amicable departure of bassist/vocalist Arthur von Nagel. A late 2013/early 2014 release is expected, with more details to follow soon.

Says the band in a collective statement, "We're excited to have Marcus Luscombe join Cormorant for our next album. Marcus is a Bay Area native who has been active in the metal scene since 1999 as lead guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist for Vengince (Ivory Tower/Cargo Records) and lead singer, lyricist and guitarist for Cloakwheel (Nightmare Records). We're very impressed by his creativity and musicianship, and we look forward to utilizing his talents on the upcoming record and beyond.”

As a thank-you to their longtime fans and introduction to new ones, Cormorant's entire discography (including Dwellings) is currently streaming on their Bandcamp page at this location.

I think the band Marcus used to be in, Vengince, opened at Mayhem once. They were one of the better openers. I'm sure that if the dudes in Cormorant chose him he's more than a great fit. New Cormorant either late this year or early 2014. GET HYPED :rocker:

Fuck that's tempting. Really tempting. Fuck. Especially since I'm probably going to be nowhere near SJ until like December.

But yeah, this should be a ton of fun. I honestly really can't wait for the sessions, hell I may give up seeing Maiden if it conflicts with one of the tracking dates. I know Justin's super psyched too, we've both been anxiously waiting for this. If Feg can finally finish things up and Dimesland, Hazzard's Cure and Wild Hunt stay on schedule, this summer will be an amazing one for Trakworx.

Give Cormorant your money to fund the new album.

Very tempted to pay for a custom Cormorant atmospheric trap rap song about the evolutionary history of manatees.

Does one of the guys go to GFaqs? he namedropped the metal board.

I believe their previous bassist/vocalist, Arthur von Nagel, used to participate on those boards. But I'm not sure any of the current members do.

Hmm, they chose Waking Sleep huh? Good move on their part, they haven't shown off the best songs from the album yet. ;)

Also watching Nick track the solo on this song was nothing short of awesome. SRV meets black metal!

The Bay Area alchemists behind the progressive black/death/trad metal of CORMORANT have completed work on Earth Diver, the follow-up to 2011’s Dwellings, and are finally ready to share a few more details about the release. The new full-length is slated for an April release, and features mind-boggling cover art from accomplished artist Sam Ford of WIZARD RIFLE (whose creations can be seen gracing works by BLACK COBRA, WITCH MOUNTAIN, OCCULTATION, ATRIARCH).

The band collectively states, "We’re excited to reveal Sam Ford’s awesome artwork for Earth Diver…it has been several months in the making and worth every second! The cover draws upon many of the lyrical themes featured on the album, and it’s part of a 4-panel presentation that includes further custom artwork from Sam.”

Earth Diver tracklisting:

‘Eris’
‘Daughter Of Void’
‘Sold As A Crow’
‘Waking Sleep’
‘The Pythia’
‘Broken Circle’
‘Mark The Trail’
‘A Sovereign Act’

The band's third LP will continue to explore the black metal and doom influences found on Dwellings and will also mark the first appearance of new bassist/vocalist Marcus Luscombe (VENGINCE, ex-CLOAKWHEEL). Recording, mixing and mastering were once again be handled by Justin Weis (AGALLOCH, SLOUGH FEG, HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE) and the band will once more release the record on their own terms.

The new artwork of course isn't as majestic as the Dwellings artwork, but I still really like it. I can't wait to hear this record.

Artwork with a "majestic" vibe wouldn't work for Earth Diver. This album is a lot darker than Dwellings IMO. From what I remember of the songs, this artwork is totally perfect for the vibe and sound that the music had. A lot more sinister, a lot heavier, just really different from Dwellings in general but still totally sounds like Cormorant.

I probably said it earlier at some point, but these guys all utterly annihilated with their performances in the studio. Brennan's parts on this album would make most drummers die halfway through the song, but dude kept nailing solid takes one after another and wouldn't even need a break. Just an incredible band to watch track. You guys are also gonna like Marcus a lot I think. His bass playing was really versatile and he has a really strong voice on top of that.

I got my pre-order today and this is amazing. I'm not even done with the album but I'm floored. If you have any doubt in your mind about this album, stop being dumb and order a copy if you haven't already. It should be noted that both Metalsetlists and our very own Onioner are personally thanked by the band in the credits. I don't think any other band will be thanking this forum in their credits.

Yeah, the only album I can think of now that might come close would be new Giant Squid, Triptykon, Electric Wizard, and if it's happening, Sleep. But you never know what might come out of the blue.
