This, the new songs sound like second-tier versions of Era Vulgaris.

I dug the "My God is the Sun" song a lot, the rest have been meh. I think they might have had too many chefs in the kitchen, with all of the guests.

Most QOTSA albums have a ton of guests anyway, I think Josh has just grown out of writing riff-oriented songs.

No fucks given. I'm sure they're going to do a bunch of new stuff with guests and whatnot, but unless John Garcia jumps onstage for Kyuss songs again I really don't care.

Album has really really grown on me. I absolutely love "Keep Your Eyes Peeled". Such a sick bassline and groove. Its not something that'll hit you the 1st time but it grows on you.

W/ the special guests I really probably expected a bit too much. But easily best album since Songs For The Dead.

I really am digging this album. I think QOTSA are a band that change up their style and sound with every album and while this album dosent have the rage from songs for the deaf or crunchy, stoner esque riffs from their self titled (Save for the song "Keep your eyes peeled" which has a pretty awesome sludgy riff throughout). I think they put more of an emphasis on melody and harmony on this record (songs like "Vampyres of Memory" and "....Like Clockwork" utilizing very nice solos combined with some pretty dreary lyrics). And while they can still bang out some amazing riffs, "my God is the Sun" and "Smooth Sailing" especially, I feel like the change toward a more cathartic and dreary sound is a pretty awesome direction that the band has taken with this album and I cant wait to here the new stuff in a live setting.

PS. Sorry for the elongated post, I'm a pretty big QOTSA fan :)

Congrats to QOTSA #1 Album on Billboard

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE's new album, "...Like Clockwork", sold 91,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 1 on The Billboard 200 chart. Issued on June 4 via Matador Records, the disc follows up "Era Vulgaris", which opened with 52,000 units back in June 2007 to enter the chart at No. 14. The band's 2005 offering "Lullabies to Paralyze" registered a first-week tally of nearly 97,000 copies, to debut at No. 5.

barclays and toronto are the only large arenas on the tour.

much like most of the other bigger "indie" bands that have played there, it probably wont be full arena (cant remember who it was but i saw a picture of the upper balcony closed and covered with curtains), but i think they are big enough to draw a respectable number in only the biggest metro area in the country.

Seeing as it was in December, I figured it was the first announced date of another leg.

And that band was The Black Keys. I remember having the same thoughts when they played the Garden. They ended up getting just over 10K in attendance for their show here. Probably because it was the cheapest arena show in years (most expensive tickets were 50 after fees)

detuned
08-27-2013, 07:48 PM
it probably is another short leg, but regardless, i cannot imagine itll be full of that size of places, especially if its northeast focused as im assuming.

and the band i was thinking of was smashing pumpkins (for perspective, they sold 54,000 first week of their last album, and obviously havent been very relevant for a long long time. also they sold discounted tickets to this, under the guise of sandy relief)

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/smashingpumpkins/barclayscenter/2.jpg

and here is what the national (75,000 first week) can pull at barclays

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/fp/youthlagoon/barclaycenter/youth-lagoon-23.jpg

QOTSA did 91,000 first week of their latest. by that vague logic you would think they could at least do what the national did.

also, a band like rush only was on selling 10,815 tickets total at barclays, so you can wipe that 18k number from your mind

also, mumford and sons and the postal service did 2 nights each there.

while the non-visible back sections were quite thin, this was definitely a much better turnout than i had feared.

what a fucking joke those floor sections were though. both supposedly cost the same, both supposedly "sold out" from day one of on sale.

now to find some good barclays pics...

^ One of the many reasons I loathe the Agganis.

For those who are local but haven't been there, the seats are smaller than the Orpheum's & Fenway Park's.

what, the floor sections?

was my first time there, aside from the bathrooms being way too fucking small, it seemed fine for an arena.

cutting off beer sales at 9:30 was a bit strange, but irrelevant to me.

Are there other venues in the country that have a barrier on the floor such as the Agganis? That might be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.
I got a really good seat in section 102 the day off but a friend wound up giving me her wristband so I could head on the floor.

they kinda arent. it being the only new england show so far on the album cycle thus far probably helped. i know of a lot of other mainers who came down for it, one of my good friends came up from connecticut, so im sure there was lots of out of staters.

even though from the pics ive seen so far from barclays that it looks like it was a good turnout as well, im guessing/hoping these handful of arena shows are more of them just taking a crack at that scale while riding high on the reception of the latest album. as great as they are, i still think they are still too left of center to make the jump to arena band outright.

Yeah prior to the Agganis show the biggest place I'd seen them headline was the House of Blues in Boston. While I'd say they do deserve it I'd rather see them play those smaller venues again.

Yeah, their floor sections are retarded. It was the same setup for the BlackDiamondSkye show and the Zombie/Manson show that ended up getting cancelled for no reason & moved to frigging Glens Falls, NY.

Wasn't aware of the beer cutoff time.

The first time I went there was in 2009 for the annual Comics Come Home benefit show. I had stage right loge seats about 10 rows back. As soon as I sat down, I was pissed at how small the seats were. Granted I'm a big dude (6'2", 270), I have zero complaints about the seats at the Garden, Verizon or Tsongas. The cupholders on the armrests were scraping my sides the entire time.

hah, guess i stopped reading at his height. i know that shit too well, i use to weight far far far more than that.

beware of row 11 center at the orpheum PVH5150, you literally have to be like under 5'8" to actually sit comfortably in those seats. got fucked out incredible seats once because of that. i would have had to sit at a 90 degree angle and get all up in my friends personal space to even make it remotely work. FUCK THAT PLACE

hopefully coachella doesn't prevent bands from playing in the bay area between dates, I'm still waiting for a proper headlining show.

I would assume there's some kind of exclusivity agreement preventing this honestly.

Wow. Releasing one of the best albums they've ever done I figured they'd tour off this for 3 years. I'm shocked they are going back in the studio in 9 months. But hell if you wait 6 years to release an album maybe they are anxious again. I don't know. If it's even half of what the new album was I'll accept that as a win.

nah. i remember last year goldenvoice booked at least refused up in san fran in between the coachella weekends. year before godspeed filled in that week with a run of san fran shows too. not to mention goldenvoice fills up all the small clubs in so cal with coachella bands too (http://mycoachella.mydesert.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/goldenvoice.jpg). coachella has been long sold out, so they have no need to worry about the draw being effected by their or any other shows. bands are expected to tour around the southwest to play both weekends.

I stand corrected, thats cool then.

QotSA played that shitty Made in America festival last September, and they still have yet to do an actually Philly show...guessing that festival made them sign something.

I wouldn't think so. In fact, I know a lot of bands that played Coachella came up to the bay area for a show in-between weeks last year. That's what Band Of Horses were doing when I saw them (I got free tickets).

I think they just did that show to cover a smaller market they hadn't hit earlier. Just a few months before that they sold out the Fox in Oakland (2,800) within a couple weeks of tickets going on sale.
