Take with a grain of salt but I hear A7X is booking a Fall tour with Deftones and Ghost.

Also it has been leaked on theprp.

Grr. Going to see Ghost next month headlining so depending on price...

An opening slot would yield 5-6 songs so would have to think about it. Don't care for the other 2 bands.

Yeah I'm guessing

Ghost : 30 Minutes
Deftones : 55 Minutes
A7X : 1 and a half or so.

What size venue would this tour be? I'm guessing small arena.

Probably. Every time A7X has come to MA, to my knowledge, they've always played the Tsongas Center which holds 7,500 at full capacity.

Wow, I've been really on the fence about the Ghost show in DC recently just because the timing isn't great and I knew when they announced the tour they wrote on Facebook that the children of the "forgotten territories" should be patient. But if this is the tour they meant then fuck that, I need to go to the headlining date.

A source close to A7X mentioned they were doing dates with Deftones but did not know who was opening. Chino Moreno & members of A7X were among several well known musicians hanging out at a Ghost show in Cali back in the Spring for what thats worth.

I prefer Deftones wayyyy more than A7X but A7X is definitely a headliner over Deftones. A7X plays arenas here in AZ, Deftones the same venue as the European metal bands.

This is a tricky argument, but ultimately, I agree with you. I'll venture to say that about half the crowd will leave after Deftones, and they've definitely sold more records. But since A7X gets more radio play, I guess they're a bigger draw.

Deftones hasn't had a platinum or gold record since 2003. A7X's last 4 releases in that time frame have all gone gold or platinum. Like it or not, A7X is by far the bigger draw nowadays and more fans will probably stick around for them than you think.

The cancellation of the Zombie/Manson show last year with zero explanation and just a lack of hard rock/metal shows in general. Off the top of my head, i think the last 2 metal shows there were Maiden in 06 and BlackDiamondSkye in 2010.

Aren't they more popular now after Nightmare though? I saw them on the Buried Alive leg of the tour in Madison, that was far from sold out, but it didn't matter because the seats were first come, first serve. But at the All State they assign you seats. They usually don't do behind the stage. I see it being half full or so. They were popular during the Uproar / Nightmare phase but lost a lot of fanbase since not much has happened and everytime they've hit IL since Uproar has been on the outskirts of the state.

Don't think it's an underestimate. I find it hard to put A7X (at least now) in the same company as playing same arenas that Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica, Ozzy & other bands of that popularity play. I think A7X would be the next level down from those above bands, but close.

Hiatus? Didn't they just get done touring like last June or something?

But then again the Foo Fighters were on Hiatus for 4 months, and Abigail Williams were on hiatus 2 weeks, I guess A7X took a break longer than most 15 minute of fame artist's careers.

I have no doubt they wouldn't be able to sell out an arena even if sections were roped off, but I honestly don't see them playing below amphitheaters now. To be honest I think the choice of "good" openers here will ultimately hurt them. If they bitched out and got Black Veil Brides and some other dumb band to open for them, the sky is the limit.

Interesting.

I'm legitimately shocked this is coming to the Garden.
knew they were really overshooting and overpricing. apparently they closed the balcony and moved those people to the $35 price level that i was unaware that was even added, which looks pretty empty in this video (far back loge). should have been lowell.

Not sure this video is fair, a Boston crowd will be late arriving - BUT this tour being in the Garden is ridiculous. If they needed an arena Worcester or Lowell would have made way more sense. Or possibly even Manchester.

The HoB in Boston is the biggest one, it holds somewhere between 2000-2500, at those ticket prices it would have worked.

Yep you're right, Agganis is like 7-8k or something. I think DCU in Worcester is like 12k?

The Garden can be 17k+ for concerts, even more for acts that do a center stage if they pack the floor. Wicked odd.

Might not be much better at the Garden to be honest. They have very strict rules on pyro there.

I saw TSO there last year and it was strange seeing a practically pyro-free TSO show. Even the band didn't seem to be too thrilled. Same with Rush.

I thought you guys were talking about MSG when referencing "the Garden" the entire time I was reading this thread up until now. I just looked up shows on setlist.fm and found out you meant the TD Garden in Boston :eyes:

Was skeptical about the thought of Avenged Sevenfold playing Madison Square Garden anyway. I love the band, but it would probably be a box office failure. On the other hand, another band I enjoy Passion Pit headlined there in February and sold pretty well. They're not the biggest band in the world either so you never know, someday they might...

Isn't MSG not much bigger than the TD Garden? And New York also has like 12x the population that Boston has, so I don't think it'd be that much more difficult.

MSG is listed at 20K even. I've never been there, so I'm not sure.

I know the actual seating capacity at the Garden is 17,565 for Bruins games & 18,624 for Celtics games. Probably around 18K for endstage concerts when you account for the people on the floor making up for the tarped off seats behind the stage.

And while Boston's population isn't anywhere near NYC's, you can get from Rhode Island & New Hampshire to the Garden quicker than you can get from Staten Island to Manhattan. But that clearly didn't happen last night. My friend photographed the show last night and he said there were between 6-7K there. Whoever has it in their head that these semi-major bands in sports arena tours are a good thing is a fucking dolt. Yeah, Avenged Sevenfold has a #1 album. So does Skid Row and they played at Wally's Pub last year.

detuned

not quite. love that rush actually publishes their numbers:

TDG
9,861/10,031 (2012)
11,331/11,903 (2010)

MSG
13,207/13,207 (2011)
11,786/12,125 (2007)

also, How Are Passion Pit Playing Madison Square Garden? (http://www.spin.com/articles/how-are-passion-pit-playing-madison-square-garden/)
Glancy explains the primary misconception that comes with booking an arena show: "You go to see the Knicks play at Madison Square Garden and there are 18,000 people. But you put the stage down, boom, you shrink that to about 12,000." Very few musicians Neil Diamond, U2, Dave Matthews, for instance play to 360 degrees of wall-to-wall fans at MSG. Most artists, like Passion Pit, sign on for 180 degrees and then add more if needed.

"We were originally selling for 12,300 and now we're up to around 13,000," says Cohen. So they kinda "sold out" the Garden, then? "But we can't actually say that because we don't want to turn anyone back. We're up to 220 degrees and we're going to 240. Sometimes that can mean pushing the stage back, but if there are no big columns or curtains in your production, you can open up the sides and sell more seats."

And while Boston's population isn't anywhere near NYC's, you can get from Rhode Island & New Hampshire to the Garden quicker than you can get from Staten Island to Manhattan.
youre giving new englanders too much credit. people like you and i will travel all over, your average person wont. not to mention, while it might technically be quicker, that involves actually driving, trains in NYC cover more ground and more people.

i bet avenged would do fine at MSG.

Whoever has it in their head that these semi-major bands in sports arena tours are a good thing is a fucking dolt. Yeah, Avenged Sevenfold has a #1 album. So does Skid Row and they played at Wally's Pub last year.

I'm not in the concert/ticket business or anything but you don't need to fill a huge arena to turn a profit on the show. A lot of the times they'll account for this and use a smaller setup. I know when a lot of the mid sized hard rock/metal bands play the Air Canada Centre in Toronto they don't even sell tickets to the upper level and have that whole section closed off, and save money on less staff and stuff. Sometimes 6,000-7,000 people in an arena does the trick especially with food and beer and stuff.

Another thing is that the choice of venues in big cities doesn't allow for the perfect seating situation that fits the exact number of people who are going to go. I think i've said in threads before that bands like Avenged Sevenfold and other mid-sized hard rock/metal bands are sort of stuck in no man's land where they're too big for the theatres and not big enough to pack big arenas and amphitheatres. Some cities have smaller arenas that hold less than 10k but some just have the big NHL/NBA arenas and then the smaller clubs and theatres. I know people here mentioned the DCU Center in Worcester as being a better choice for this tour but I don't think that venue is much smaller than TD Garden. I also would assume that not all of the venues on this tour are as big as TD Garden, and it all just depends on what the city has to offer.

EDIT: Nvm, I just looked at the tour dates again and saw at least half the venues are big. Oh well.

DCU is quite a bit smaller than TDG. operational costs could be a bit less being in worcester instead of boston too.

as you were getting at though, just because they couldnt fill the place doesnt necessarily mean it was a financial disaster, but the fact the balcony was sold and then closed*, and then the $20 ($35) price level was added close to the show, would indicate it sold far less than they expected.

which you could chalk up to that "no man's land", except not only are there multiple smaller arenas in the area, but the promoter has booked avenged in two of them before, with even more commercially successful support**, so they obviously know what the band is capable of pulling. i know avenged not only debuted at billboard #1 again, but nearly matched sales of their last album (quite impressive considering the decline in sales in the past 3 years), but clearly that didnt warrant such a jump in venue size.

* what boggles me is they actually let people up to the balcony before closing and moving people (according to a dude who instagramed from both seats)

** stone sour/hollywood undead lowell 2011, three days grace/bullet for my valentine springfield 2011

Hmmm, it appears you did your research...

I guess the only thing I can think of is either being a bit too over amibitious (which has been said before) or maybe that the promoter has a good relationship with that venue and was able to get a good deal? Is it a Live Nation tour, by any chance?

I think House of Blues would still be wayyyy to small for A7X. Doesn't Deftones usually headline HOB-sized venues?

Yup. Deftones just did the Boston HOB earlier this year, and that's the biggest one (2,425 capacity). The smallest one is New Orleans (I think) with a capacity of around 850.

Floor and close loge were $72.50 at the box office and somewhere around $85 on Ticketmaster. Definitely a contributing factor to a shit turnout.
