View Full Version : NINE INCH NAILS ARE FUCKING BACK, BABY!

NOTE FROM TRENT:
Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.
I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked - which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.
The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.
Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.

What a SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK line up of new NIN now. Adrian Belew? That arena tour in the fall. I will be there as well.

Probably the BEST live show/setup I've ever been to when I saw them w/ Boris in '08.

You could pretty much see this coming however. Doesn't cheapen it at all for me.

I figured Trent would have NIN tour again and I'm very excited. I saw them on the 2006 With Teeth Summer tour and it was an incredible show. Every so often I regret being too lazy/stupid to not seeing their two Chicago shows on the Wave Goodbye tour. I won't make that mistake again. Hopefully.

But if NIN comes to Sprint in the fall. You will see the BEST stage show you will ever see.

I don't think its possible to see any band Trent is in and not think of him as NIN and nothing else. They were just too huge to think he could do something not NIN and have it succeed at all.

It's not HTDA (or is it? i don't really know) but people creamed themselves over his work doing the soundtrack to The Social Network, so there's definitely buzz over him for stuff other than NIN.

So I'm pretty sure I just found confirmation that NIN is coming to Orlando, FL. I was looking at the page for the Justin Timberlake show coming (don't judge me) and started looking at the various seating charts. Most of the shows coming had their own separate seating charts, and I noticed that one of the charts is titled "NIN" with a GA floor (all of the other shows coming up have seats on the floor). No date for it, but I would guess it is between the end of October and the beginning of November (around the time of Voodoo and MOEMS).

I'm really digging the new song, however my most favorite 2 albums are Downward Spiral and Fragile and I don't think those will ever be topped. And it seems that after those, Trent kind of ran out of creative power and has kind of repeated a lot of things on the albums that followed. I still really enjoyed those albums a lot, but they're just not as exciting and interesting as my favorite 2.

I think he might be tough to work w/ but in all honesty, Trent is NIN. He is the final say. That's probably why they've been through so many members. He's better off getting a guitar player who's not a big name. A big guitar player would probably want to do their own thing, rather than what Trent wants. Lets be honest, Adrian fuckin Belew doesn't have to do anything he doesn't want to do. Of course I figured he'd know ahead time its Trents show. If he is out its best do it before the tour starts. Hopefully its not true, I'd love to see such a great guitar player w/ NIN.

No different on the Lights In The Sky tour. Are there really tons of metal bands that can sell upper and lower level of an arena? Pretty sure they do an arena because of the fact their stage and light show is so incredibly huge. No way their show would work at a theater.

Gotta say I'm a little disappointed w/ NIN. Looks like they are trying to milk this reunion for all its worth. On Lights In The Sky w/ the EXACT same setup (arenas, end stage, GA floor, etc...) when I saw them in Tulsa I paid between $45-55 to be on the GA floor. After looking on Ticketmaster out of the 3 or 4 I looked at, the floor is going for $100+. I'm sure it will be an amazing show like Lights In The Sky.

If they say this tour will be an extension of it, then why in the hell is the price literally twice what it was in 2008? I love NIN and they put on the best live stage show I've ever seen but I'm disappointed that they are jacking their prices up all because of the shtick of "reuniting". Kinda reeks of a $ grab.

I'd find that hard to believe that they have little to no control over their ticket prices. That did jog my memory a little bit though... I do also remember that in '08 was when they were independent and now that they signed to Columbia their tickets are sky high.

I get that on a major label the tickets would probably go up a bit, but it seems hard to believe that they go from independent to major label and that doubles the prices of their shows. Again, I don't know for sure but that seems a bit excessive to me.

I mean, i'm sure they control it somewhat indirectly with how much they get paid by the promoter each show and the stage productions costs and all that, but ultimately it's the promoters who decide what the ticket prices are.

That's easy. Tour income is the only way to pay back the money fronted by the label for recording because record sales don't cover it anymore. When they were fronting the money themselves (and probably doing things on a much lower budget accordingly), there was less to recoup. Now they've got to make more money to pay back Columbia.

And of course, don't rule out the fact that they're only touring again because the money's run out from last time.

After the success of the first 3 albums going 2, 3, and 4 times platinum, I honestly and truly believe that Trent is a multi millionaire who has more money than he'll ever know what to do with. He could control the ticket prices somewhat by asking a smaller fee for the shows NIN plays. Also, it's sad that after complaining about the greed of record labels and going independent, he went back on a record label.

Also, track listing for the album:
1. The Eater of Dreams 0:52

Money talks. And no matter how much you may have you'll always want more.

I know labels are pretty insignificant these days, but isn't Columbia a way larger label than Interscope ever was?

Not ashamed to say, I really did not like much of anything about that song. I think I might have finally came around on Came Back Haunted, but this is not anything I have any intention of ever wanting to hear again. Trent I know you are better than this.

That song sounded like a very subpar indie pop bands song with Trent Reznor singing it.

I am incredibly disappointed.

Theoretically if one were interesting if hearing said album, where might one go about acquiring it? This is all hypothetical of course.

I'll go ahead and say I like what I've heard, even "Everything," which was grown on me. You can definitely tell Trent went back and listened to Pretty Hate Machine.

I agree - it's pretty tight. I wasn't impressed with the few random samples I heard here and there, but I listened to the album as a whole last night and I gotta say I'm liking it.

Yup, overall it's pretty good. Much better than the rest of the post-Fragile material.

I absolutely love this album!!! Since Fragile, I felt like Trent was repeating himself quite a bit and not sounding very original, but this album has a lot of new unique and original stuff going on that I've never heard on a NIN album. And the creativity level is just off the charts! I do wish it was a bit more upbeat and had some good metal guitars on more than just Everything, but all the stuff going on instrumentally helps to make up for it quite a bit. Because of all that, this is my favorite NIN album since Fragile. Downward Spiral is a 10/10 and Fragile is a 9 so I give this an 8 and I would give the albums between Fragile and this one all a 7.

Year Zero is my favorite also.

Gave one listen so far. I liked it but was a bit underwhelmed cuz of how mellow it sounded but I know I will start to hear everything on more listens and get into it.

Makes sense. It's more Pretty Hate Machine than Downward Spiral or The Fragile. Trent is in a good place now, so his music reflects that. Personally I'm pretty happy with it.

Satellites is the worst kpop song with NIN background sounds.

Album is inconsistent. Many moments of greatness and quite a few duds as well. Feel conflicted about it as a whole. It'll receive re-listens later because its (to its credit or not) definitely not an album that's immediately digestible.

Yea...

As a very huge NIN supporter. The album is not very good. I've tried to get into it a couple different times. Its upsetting that it was such a let down. I didn't think The Slip was a great album by any means but it had its moments. At this point I would have been satisfied if it was even The Slip good which it is not.

Definitely, and I'm hoping it will grow on me.

This record has a subtlety about it. He's not trying to shock people anymore. His earlier stuff was compelling because it was more intense and disturbing, and packed a punch, but his music across the board is going to be good just because musically he's one of the best there is.

That he's changing his style a bit, I think gives the music a novel feel. I like this, but at the same time I miss being walloped in the face. I also like that it's obvious he listens to a ton of different styles of music, like Prince or jazz standards, and that they find their way into his music. What I don't like, and can't escape, is that a decent portion of this album is boring, especially by NIN standards, and it's actually hard to concentrate on it all the way through.

I actually like the album as a whole, for the reasons you stated. Does it have its less interesting moments? Sure, but I wouldn't call them boring. I just agree that he no longer seems to feel the need to punch us in the face anymore, and as appealing as it was when he was doing it, it's not always necessary. He's a great artist.

That, and I thought The Slip was less interesting than this one, so if you wanna fight about it, 300%, I'll be your huckleberry. :boxer: ;)

Well dang, maybe I'm the problem and not the album.

I agree that this album is better than The Slip. And I disagree with Velvetgrass, I think this album is also better than With Teeth. That makes it their best album since The Fragile (excluding Ghosts I-IV which is a different animal anyway).

InFlamesOfBirchmen

I'll be honest, I don't get the love for With Teeth. It's okay at best, but isn't that memorable in my opinion with the exception of the singles.

illuminatus917

With Teeth was NIN's first "average" album, and first attempt at simplifying the music to some degree. It was a poor channeling of Reznor's angst, and came across as immature. And uninspired.

The new album has grown on me a lot. I wouldn't put it on the level of his earlier work but it's probably my second favorite album of his since the Fragile, the first being the first How to Destroy Angels EP..
