I think I'd almost prefer them just call this 14. Super Collider sounds like a metal album that an elementary school came up with.

It drives me nuts when people put a lot of stock into musicians saying that their next album is the best they've ever done, best since so-and-so album, a return to this sound, blah blah blah. Of course they're going to say it's their best ever. I'd love it if someone said "This album we're working on is fucking garbage, but I hope you guys buy it anyway!"

I wonder if the album title is referring to one of these?

This topic might be too "nerdy" for Mustaine though unsless he believes there's some kind of conspiracy behind building these things.

Agreed, I love Rush and it's the same thing, "We're going back to our roots and this will be much better than the last one" or something like that every time they make a new album. I even found an old magazine interview with Rush from 1994 where they said that and that was almost 20 years ago, although I will say they finally got it right with Clockwork Angels. If Dave can make another Rust in Peace I'm all for it but I definitely won't be buying this blind.

UA is one of those albums that just kinda gets forgotten. I think it was a step up from System Has Failed (not sayin a ton though) but I think it pails to Endgame and is mostly a lost album. I'll still listen to a few songs from it every now and then.

I think it's also how 13 will be viewed several years from now as well. Not really good, not really bad, just kind of blends in w/ the furniture.

It's more or less a result of our age. I like UA too, when I got into Megadeth it was their most recent album. Endgame was the first Megadeth release I could actually look forward to, so the fact that it was actually pretty good definitely "elevated" its quality in a way when it came out. Endgame practically lived in my car during junior year of high school, so I have a lot of fun memories of blasting it while driving to In 'n' Out with friends. It's still my favorite post-RiP Megadeth album.

Also I am pretty much banking on Super Collider being just as mediocre as Thirteen. As long as Johnny K is still sticking his fingers in the songwriting, the thrash is gonna be bare minimal. Maybe we'll luck out and batshit crazy MegaDave translates to pissed off fast songs, but I highly doubt that'll be the case.

The only thing I don't really understand is the love for Youthanasia. I've tried listening to it I don't know how many times, and I just don't get it. Obviously its along the lines of CTE, only to me, they seem like they'd be B-Sides for CTE.

For me CTE and then Endgame for post RIP. Everything else can be numbered whatever as I don't really care for the rest very much, with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 songs from those albums. But thats just my preference.

Just thought a few people might like a chuckle at this. MegaDave's foreward for Michael Sweet's (Stryper) new autobiography:

'Sometimes you see someone or something and you think you got it all figured out, just to find you were pretty far off base. That’s a sucky feeling. I learned a long time ago not to judge a book by its cover, and as much as I used to think that I am nothing like Michael Sweet, I have come to realize that we both have had a lot of hardships in common; the same trials and tribulations, the same band problems, and some of the same relationship issues. Fortunately for us, we both believe in the same Jesus, and serve the same amazing, loving creator, so it’s no wonder that we would both be standing on the same victorious side of life, once all the smoke clears at the end of the fight. I hope you will enjoy his memoirs and come to a new understanding and a new appreciation of Michael Sweet.'

Wouldn't be true if you believed in different Jesuses, right Dave?

A poor sounding leak on YouTube will discredit a song from the first moment. Whoever leaked it did Megadeth no favor. God damn hooligans, I say!

The song won't be a favorite of mine. It will be one of that songs that passes the time on shuffle lists while waiting for other tracks.

Maybe it works live better. I don't know.

Speaking to the "Shockwaves"/"HardRadio" podcast, Mustaine stated about the "Super Collider" title track and cover artwork: "I was up in Santa Barbara, and USA Today, as a newspaper, I started reading a long time ago because it had Sudoku in it. I'm not really down with a lot of the viewpoints of the newspaper, but I kind of got used to reading it because of the puzzles in it — 'cause I love word puzzles; I like to enrich my word power. And there was a story in there about how they finally had identified the mass that goes around the molecules and stuff; it's called the Higgs Boson and we had done that with the Super Collider. And I thought, 'Wow, that's a really cool story.' Actually, the stuff's called the 'God particle.' And I thought, knowing how closed-minded people are with my faith and thinking that that's gonna change who I am as a person — which it did — and that that would also correlate into changing my guitar playing, which it didn't, I didn't wanna have a song called 'God Particle', because every village has its idiots, and unfortunately for me, a bunch of them follow me on the Internet. So we opted to call it 'Super Collider'. And this first song is kind of, like, a song about no matter how bad things get, come with me, we'll take the high road and we'll hang out and have a great time and we'll stick together until the end of the world, so to speak, when the world explodes like a Super Collider. Because the whole theory of the super collider is atoms swirling into one another at millions of miles an hour, I guess. I love the concept, I love the artwork that we have for this record — it's the Hadron Collider, and that is a remarkable machine. And if you look at the Super Collider, the thing itself — whether it does a damn bit of good or not, nobody really knows; I don't know how it's gonna correlate to lowering gas prices or anything like that, or getting people to stop trying to run everybody's lives right now and the dumbing down of America… But it's really cool if you look at how big it is. A lot of pictures on the 'Net will show this enormous machinery and guys the size of ants next to it. And the one picture that we used for our cover was, like I said, the Hadron Collider and it's just beautiful stuff, man. Science is really interesting. I mean, I don't believe in evolution, I believe in creation, so science only goes so far with me, but I really dig looking at that whole way that's set up with the tubing and the piping and the reactors and all the stuff that goes along with it. You have to see it for yourself."
Wow what a cool story.

Ommie

It feels to me that Megadeth is pushing out too many albums too fast. I mean I know that is a typical cycle of any band but since Dave reformed the band in 2004, they have done 5 albums in 9 years. I like it when bands have more time between albums so they can mix up the setlist. With Megadeth it seems like tour BAM record BAM tour BAM. For me nothing they have done has really been high quality since Endgame, and that album got really underplayed in that tour cycle.

Rant over; I'll listen to the whole thing and see if it is worth buying because this might be the first 'deth album I skip getting considering how much of a letdown 13 was

And w/ very low expectations I will begin my listen...

What the hell. I have no bosses at work today. I will type off my first impression of these songs.

1. Kingmaker - I really like this song. The lyrics are kinda meh, but music is really great. Already better than anything off 13 IMO.
2. Supercollider - Prefer that Bon Jovi songs stay w/ Bon Jovi. No, not ever. Terrible.
3. Burn - Is he really saying "Burn Baby Burn"? I feel embarrassed for myself listening to this.
4. Built For War - Zzzzz...Only thing I remember is constantly hearing "Built for War" but everything else is unforgettable.
5. Off The Edge - Equally as bad as Built For War. Repetitive and unnecessary.
6. Dance In The Rain - More crap, running out of ways to call this bad.
7. The Beginning of Sorrow - No
8. The Black Crow - Next
9. Forget To Remember - Blah
10. Don't Turn Your Back -Less bad as 2-9, not as good as Kingmaker. Guess by default 2nd best song on album.
11. Cold Sweat - A very killer cover of a great Thin Lizzy track. Not enough TL songs off Thunder & Lightning are covered. Seems like the majority are just off Jailbreak or earlier albums.

This is pretty much what I think all of us were expecting. I might try to listen to all of this again (won't be soon however) and see if I've changed my mind but off of 1st listen this is not good. I still think there might have been 3 songs off 13 I liked. Only 2 off this and 1 is a cover so I can't even really count that.

Sad thing is mine we really low too, and yet somehow I still feel very sad after listening to it. Draimain really needs to work on making his other bands awful and not Megadeth. They were doing a good job making mediocre music before him and now its a step lower than that. I think tomorrow I will try to listen to Risk again and see what I hate most. I haven't given Risk a full listen in years.

I am with you; I thought Risk was the biggest piece of shit but at least Risk at the time was done out of MegaDave wanting that #1 album; he has no damn excuse now since Megadeth has grown and done some good work TSHF, Endgame and some of UA

To me "giving it a shot" does not involve buying it. The good thing about today's music industry is that you can prevent yourself from rewarding shitty work.

Wouldn't class any of those as "good work".

Well, the thing is I'm not expecting a great album but I think some of the samples sound cool so I'm actually expecting to enjoy it at least to some degree. I don't know what it is about new Megadeth and me, I may just be sick in the head. But like I said earlier in the thread, I've actually come to find the title track fairly catchy and I listened to Dance in the Rain last night and I enjoyed it.

But I don't hate Risk or all of Thirteen either, the only Megadeth album I absolutely hate is The World Needs a Hero.

I mostly agree. I don't hate The World Needs A Hero, but it is definitely my least favorite Megadeth album. It drags on too long... and Return To Hangar? Seriously?

Eh, so I listened to Risk again to see what IMO was worse. Tough to say, they are both bad in different ways I would say. I would have to give the edge to Supercollider for being worse. W/ Risk some of it is bad (at times laughably bad) but I think Dave was atleast honest about what Risk was. He didn't try to say it was this or that, as opposed to how he talked up Supercollider and how it was the best thing they'd ever done, etc.

I don't think there's anything about Risk that is good, its all just not very good but he atleast had the balls to go all in and do something 180 of what Megadeth was doing before. As safe and cashed in as 13, I refuse to type it in that other stupid way, felt like at the time as a way to contractually finish w/ Roadrunner. 13 actually feels dangerous if compared to Supercollider. It feels cashed in, half ass, and any other synonym or phrase that would describe the like.

I still think that Kingmaker is a good track and I like the Thin Lizzy cover. Even w/ liking those 2 songs I still think Risk is better of the 2. Definitely not anything I would brag about w/ Risk being greater than Supercollider but, to me, its not the worst for me anymore.

Think I might try World Needs A Hero but I will give myself a day or 2 to recover from this.

Endgame is the best Megadeth album since RIP.

Never got the love for Countdown. It's not bad, but I don't enjoy listening to it.

I like the album. Not great, not poop, just middle of the road. A few songs are really stupid (Burn!??!!!) and a few are really cool (Don't Turn Your Back). The last 1:12 of Dance In The Rain sounds like the first record. Cool vibe to Blackest Crow, and the Thin Lizzy cover is really really good.

The 2 b-sides are nothing to write home about, in fact All I Want should have never been put to tape.

Pretty much this. I like it for the most part. As usual, most of the hate is unwarranted.

Huh, they must have taken it down and re-posted it with a change or something. I was reading it at the time I posted the link here.

Popoff is just as bad as Dave in that article. 'Super Collider' is the best metal anthem this Summer? Are you high?! It's not even the best song on Super Collider.
