Well since I didn't do one last year I figured I will do one for this year since I am bored on a Saturday night. I will finish this top 14 list this week and hopefully rate other things like live shows, eps, & movies.

First, I liked to give a very short summary of my life during the year of 2012. From January to July I was unemployed with barely money. Everyday felt the same with exception of the occasionally disappointing interview and few concerts. By June I was really starting to lose my mind to an extent because of how bored I was until July where I made some progress with a few one day jobs that ultimately led to me being hired as an intern for a company in the city. Since then, I have been waiting patiently until I can obtain a full-time position so that I can hopefully one day move out of my parents house and get a apartment in city.

That being said, I am glad this year is over with and hopefully 2013 will be a a lot better. Now unto the first album on the list.

14. Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage

When I heard that Gojira signed on with Roadrunner I didn't know what I expected to hear from their next album. I was hoping that they can exceed their amazing fourth album "The Way Of All Flesh" but I knew that would be difficult for this band to surpass their best opus. However, they did a pretty good job of coming close. Many of these tracks do sound familiar to each other and most last around 5 minutes which is a little disappointing. The grooves, especially in the title track, sound amazing along with those crushing riffs that never fail to disappoint. A little more experimentation could heave helped this album sound more unique but it does sound like the most cohesive album which isn't a bad thing. Overall, it is great album from this amazing French band that definitely belongs in any top 20 list of 2012.

13. Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud

I guess you can say that I am a casual fan of Devin Townsend, I haven't been able to hear all of his works since I discovered SYL in 2006. I love discovering all the wonders that he has brought to the metal landscape and how he continues to write new material every year however I don't always enjoy all of them. Now for this album in particular I must say that I do enjoy this much more than his last two records overall. The tracks are not dragged on like in Deconstruction or too mellow like in Ghost. When I heard this record for the first time I didn't like what I was hearing but than I gradually warm up to it the more I listened to it. Lucky Animals was a track that I hated immediately but I found out that if your are in happy mood it can sound amazing with the repetitive chorus and all. Anneke van Giersbergen sounds much better here than in Addicted! and it doesn't as sound out of place at all like it did in Addicted! in some tracks. The tracks Liberation, Where We Belong, Grace, Save Our Now, Hold On are the key stand outs and ultimaly what made this record sound fantastic. Kingdom does sound a little out of place and I felt it didn't need to be remastered since it already sounded great before. Besides that, this record is a great showcase of Devin brings to the table in 2012. I just wish he would growl more and hopefully one day bring back Strapping Young Lad so that I can see them live.

12. Paradise Lost - Tragic Idol

Once again, these Gothic Brits deliver another brilliant record reminisce of their early material in the 90s. Each track sounds fantastic and if you loved Draconian Times as much as I do than it will be obvious that you will like this album all the same. My favorite track is Crucify where the production sounds amazing with those awesome solos from Mackintosh. However, this whole album sounds great and I really can't say more than that. The I don't like about this album is the cover which could have look a lot better. If you have any interest in Gothic metal than this needs your attention. Listening to this record make me feel more upset that I missed a chance to see them live when they came with Katatonia/DTP back in September.

11. Pig Destroyer - Book Burner

Pig Destroyer is my favorite grindcore band and once again they never fail to create an amazing record filled with all the aggression and violent screams that everyone can enjoy. The production sounds amazing in this record and guitars shred perfectly. Though they are not breaking any new ground like in their previous records this album shows what they do best and that is why I love them.

10. Celldweller - Wish Upon A Blackstar

I first heard Celldweller back in 2004, and I've been fan ever since. Klayton, the sole member of this band, does all the instrumentation and most of the production. Wish Upon a Blackstar has been a few years in the making, but it was worth it. There isn't another album out there that I can compare this to other than the self-titled debut. What makes this album unique in a sense is that it combines a lot of styles of electronic music such as EBM, pop, industrial rock and dubstep into one. The quality of production is second to none. The songs themselves have great hooks and catchy choruses.

9. Aborted - Global Flatline

After the somewhat disappointing Strychnine.213 album I wasn't expect much from Aborted's next opus but this album reminded me why I loved them in the first place. Excellent brutal death metal the way I like it. Violent screams, the perfect balance of aggression and grooves in the riffs, disgusting lyrics, horrifying artwork, deep growls, and those evil menacing soundbites. An exceptionally well done record from one of my favorite death metal bands.

8. Alcest - Les Voyages de L'ame

Alcest started this year great for me because January is always a perfect time to listen to full albums in the cold winter weather. I found myself lost in Neige's ethereal voice and black metal screams mixed in with that wonderful combination of shoegaze post-metal goodness. Though this record does not deviate a lot from the previous records I think Neige has perfected his own craft with this record. I think Autre Temps may very well be Alcest best song IMO.

7. Lamb of God - Resolution

This album has been receiving a lot of mixed reviews from both fans and non-fans alike. Many have been saying that LoG have lost their way and all the songs sound the same with no change to their sound. After listening to this record for most of the year I feel this is a one of their better albums and way better than their previous record Wrath. I feel this is a contender for their most aggressive record and I feel that Randy really pushed his vocals to the limit and screams that he hasn't done since the days of Burn the priest. One of my favorite songs on this record is To The End which starts off strong and randy makes the chorus sound excellent with those groovy riffs. That song should be staple in their setlist instead of The Undertow or The Number Six. Another thing that makes this record unique is Randy's clean vocals in Insurrection which at first sound out of place but I eventually came to love them and hopefully in the future can utilized his cleans more effectively. The album closes with the excellent King Me which I feel they should perform live in the future. I hope Randy doesn't get sent to jail in the Czech Republic because LoG is still important and relevant to the American metal scene IMO.

I'm not excited about LOG anymore but they are definitely release consistently quality albums. Definitely the best "popular" current metal band.

Such a great death metal album. Gets better with every listen. I love the soundbite at the end. Can't remember what scripture the professor (his name escaped me ATM) is talking about, but it's eerie as hell, and a perfect ending to the album.

6. Anathema - Weather Systems

Before this album came out I have been losing interest in this band for some time. After 'We're Here Because We're Here' I felt the band seem to sound uninspired as none of the songs on that album didn't hold any interest for me. But once I listened to this album I felt they gain the direction that they were heading. The music is so soothing & uplifting that any person can feel relax. The female vocals really fit the mood of songs pretty well. My favorite song on this album is definitely The Beginning and the End because it reminds how strong and profound Anathema music can be.

5. Stone Sour - House of Gold & Bones Part 1

This year has been full of surprises for me. After Stone Sour last record 'Audio Secrecy' I thought they would continue on a more mellow path and have soft hard rock songs with a lot of ballads. But nope this album starts off strong like any good SS album should. Gone Sovereign is such a strong opener for this song and greatly transitions well into the following Absolute Zero which has a great chrous. After that the songs sound amazing with well done production. The Travelers song reminds me of sillyworld with amazing lyrics that I can relate to along with Taciturn which is the only ballad on the album. Overall, this is the best hard rock album of the year and I hope the second record sounds better than this because it is going to be hard to top this.

4. Katatonia - Dead End Kings

Katatonia are one of my top favorite 5 bands of all time so I am always excited whenever they release new material. Now after 'Night is the New Day' many of their fans didn't think DEK was a good album but I disagree. I think I prefer DEK to NitND because of how well the album flows and the cohesiveness of all the songs. They still the same sound as NitND and the production is well done. I love everything this band has done and it makes me upset that I didn't see them last year but I can look forward to May when I get a chance to see some of these songs live.

3. Periphery II: This Time It's Personal

Whatever you think about Djent there is only one band that rises above all others in the genre and that is Periphery. Bulb Mansoor and his gang of djenters helped make one of the best records this year. I love everthing about this album and already love it more than their debut. Muramasa starts off this record strong with those hard and heavy riffs and Spencer's loud voice which sounds amazing throughout the whole album. Scarlet and Luck as a Constant sound perfect and captures everything about what makes this band sound amazing. Overall, another excellent record from this band that continues to put other bands to shame. I hope I can see them on tour soon this year.

2. Deftones - Koi No Yokan

Every time Deftones releases a new album it is almost guaranteed a top spot in my favorites for each year. This being no different and I assume everybody recognizes who they are since the release of the excellent Diamond Eyes. I remember being a long time before I became such a avid fan of this band. They have such a unique sound and nobody sounds like them makes their appealing all the more enduring once you really begin to listen to them. For this record they continue with their sound from DE and mixes it up a bit to make a record with a lot more variety of ambiance. There is not a lot of Chino's signature screaming which might seem disappointed but you most likely won't notice it. Swerve City opens up this album brilliantly and closes with the excellent What Happened to You?. Rosemary is the longest song on the album that has a mellow section that could have been cut a little shorter. Entombed and Tempest are the seemingly slow tracks in the album that take awhile to get used too but sound amazing. Graphic Nature and Poltergeist should be staples in their live set. All things considered, this is another seamlessly perfect album from front to back by one of the most consistent bands of all time.

1. Sybreed - God is an Automaton

Only a few people on this board know who this band is which is a travesty but understandable. IMO this is the best industrial band of all time. They continue to put out solid releases and have yet to gain the attention that they so desperately deserve. Combining a lot electronic influences which include synth rock/pop mixed in with death/groove metal. Great production throughout by their creative genius of a guitarist Drop who knows how make a track sound ridiculously good. The choruses are remarkable and sound excellent that they will stay in your mind for days. The electronic tempos fits well with the crushing riffs along with the solid drumming throughout the record. All in all, this album was the best thing that came out this year which is no surprise to me because every time this band releases an album it takes the top spot because they continue to deliver the music that no one else can replicate.

Best & Worst performances of 2012

Fortunately, I didn't attend enough concerts last year due to being broke so I missed a lot of concerts that I should have attended liked Iron Maiden, RobZombie/Marilyn Manson and Rammstein.

BEST
System of a Down/Deftones - Allstate Arena: August 15th
I was very excited to hear SOAD for the first time because it has been so long since they toured the US and I couldn't wait to hear some of their best songs live. Deftones put on another exciting performance and given the huge stage area they played great and got most of the crowd's attention. When SOAD hit the stage the crowd got ecstatic and sang the opening words to the Prison Song and from thereon it was flawless to the last second. Easily the best performance that I witness in 2012.

Honorable Mention
Lamb of God - Congress Theater: November 30th
LoG put on an amazing performance with an awesome stage setting that was brilliant from beginning to end. I hope that they can continue touring in the future if Randy is not sent to jail.

WORST
Suicide Silence - House of Blues: January 22nd
It is a shame that Mitch died did this past year but with that being said his band sucks and that is putting it nicely. His band has nothing to offer but screaming with breakdown after breakdown after breakdown with nothing in between. I though they would be at least decent but nope just foot stomps that align with those huge breakdowns was all this band meant and hopefully they will retire and never be heard again.

Dishonorable Mention:
Motörhead - Mayhem Fest: July 21
I never saw the appeal of this band but I respect their small important role in the metal community. However, having see them live I have to say that Lemmy and his crew are pretty boring outside of their one song witch most of the stood up to hear Ace of Spades. After that most people went back to sit in their chairs which speaks a lot about the rest of the band's catalog of songs.
