As some of you may know, I have gotten super into pop music the past year. I don't mean like hipster pop bullshit like M83 or whatever, but stuff on the radio.

I only listened to one full pop album this year (which will be in my main list) but the group is from Korea (any guesses?) so this list will be primarily of songs that were on American radio this year. I'm gonna do my top 10 and bottom 10 songs of the year. :D

So stay tuned :3c

MANKY'S TOP 10 WORST POP SONGS OF 2012

10.

Enrique Iglesias - Finally Found You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_EiqPp-vBM)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pFq0ppCspD4/UE-gLjZACfI/AAAAAAAAfn4/3otR2777Cf0/s1600/Enrique%2BIglesias%2B-%2BFinally%2BFound%2BYou%2B%2528feat.%2BSammy%2BAd ams%2529%2BLyrics.jpg

So for some reason, Enrique Iglesias went from being a perfectly normal pop star with a pretty good singing voice (and making one of the greatest pop love songs ever [Hero]) to basically making Black Eyed Peas songs. He really doesn't need to autotune his voice at all, but hey - it sells! This song actually isn't horrendous, especially not as bad as his last few singles, but the lyrical content makes it really easy to imagine Enrique as this stalker following a girl and threatening to kidnap her. "EITHER YOU'RE COMING WITH ME OR I'M COMING WITH YOU!" Holy shit, brah. Where's my mace?

Karmin - Brokenhearted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8cbak34DR0)

http://i46.tinypic.com/2myal1e.jpg

Man, I really hate this song. The verses on their own are alright and it has a catchy beat, but holy shit when the girl starts to "rap" and for some reason adopts an English accent, it makes me turn into a blind rage. Absolutely stupid and totally ruins an otherwise unremarkable song. Karmin is a one-trick pony that has already faded off most people's radars and hopefully by this time next year they'll have been forgotten forever.

Rihanna - Where Have You Been (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-0OuRVCAK8)

http://i45.tinypic.com/dfvyn6.jpg

This really sucks, not just because it's not that great of a pop song - it sucks so much because Rihanna used to be on top of the game. She's now released like three or four of the exact same sounding songs in a row, and her vocal abilities are being put on the shelf in order to blast in some crappy electronica instead. Seriously, whenever this song is on the radio, you can't hear ANYTHING except the electronica part when it kicks in. Stupid. Making music for the dance clubs and not the general public = stupid stupid stupid. She is trying to be the female Pitbull, I guess. Also she got back with Chris Brown so she's a stupid slut.

Jessie J - Domino (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJtB55MaoD0)

http://i48.tinypic.com/n4wcpk.jpg

Popular music had a lot more terrible vocalists singing over catchy beats than normal this year. Like...horrendous singers. Jessie J is not a good singer and she can't really vocalize, but I guess the beat was good enough to save this song from the bottom of the garbage bin. And this is probably the most explicit song about cunnilingus to ever reach radio airwaves.

The Wanted - Glad You Came (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiEEJds8JFE)

http://i49.tinypic.com/awtk0j.jpg

England, stop shipping us your failed pop groups. The Wanted is basically an even worse version of One Direction and Glad You Came is so fucking annoying because its main hook sounds like the music they play at Mexican Restaurants. Their overtly English accents also makes this song pretty hilarious at times, but that fucking musical hook kills it.

Flo Rida - Whistle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSnkWzZ7ZAA)

http://i46.tinypic.com/21b0r9k.jpg

Another barely-there metaphor for getting his dick sucked, Flo Rida somehow stays huge even though I think he's one of the worst rappers around today. And, as I found out last year, whistling in songs is super-fucking annoying. Just still a little mind-boggling how his consistently low-quality songs are still huge time after time after time.

4.

Nicki Minaj - Starships (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeIJmciN8mo)

http://i50.tinypic.com/2djs3k1.jpg

WHY?

No seriously, why is Nicki Minaj so huge? Starships is probably her worst song on the radio of her career, but people are eating it up. She can't sing at all, and her rapping is about as good as Eve was on a bad day. This is a classic case of someone being huge for their image instead of their actual music. Funny side-note: if you say you dislike Nicki Minaj on tumblr, you'll get accused of racism!

I don't have a problem with Nicki because "Super Bass" rules and her verse on Kanye's "Monster" is still untouchable.

Maroon 5 - One More Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwK7ggA3-bU)

http://i49.tinypic.com/34ikyys.jpg

Despite being actually pretty okay at the start of their career, Maroon 5 has turned into one of the most insufferable acts in music today over the past couple of years, mostly because of their lead singer, Adam Levine. If he's not whistling or singing in a falsetto voice, his terrible vocals are dragged all across a basic beat, just like in this song. This song almost sounds like a parody version of everything that is wrong with Maroon 5. Barf.

P!nk - Try (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTCDVfMz15M)

http://i47.tinypic.com/2moyzqa.jpg

Forget what I said about any of the previous entries not being able to sing, that's nothing compared to these last two entries. P!nk kind of came out of nowhere in the last few months with a "comeback" album, and both singles (the other being Blow Me (One Last Kiss)) are both equally pretty bad, but not only is she displaying her tone-deafness on "Try", it is also one of the worst examples of songwriting I've heard in recent years. It's forever pandering and a terrible message that is about as eloquent as a third grader writing about "not giving up." Stay out of the public eye, P!nk.

You're also uggo.

Katy Perry - Wide Awake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0BWlvnBmIE)

http://i46.tinypic.com/69dlxe.jpg

Katy Perry continues her career by releasing two of her worst singles to date, but the combination of ear-shattering singing and boring music pushes Wide Awake over the edge for me. I don't think anyone has ever accused Katy Perry of being a great singer, but when she hits the "falling from cloud NIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE" or the "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'M" near the end of the song is so grating because she cannot hit notes for the life of her. And she's obviously trying to recreate the success of Firework by releasing more "slow" songs which are Katy Perry's total weakness. Can't sing, but damn she's hotter than ever.

I'm not saying I like One More Night or Maroon 5 in general, but that wasn't even the worst song Maroon 5 released this year. Payphone and Moves Like Jagger were much, much worse imo. Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn676-fLq7I)

http://i50.tinypic.com/zik5jq.jpg

Kelly Clarkson is relevant again?! "Stronger" is Kelly's best single in three years. It's upbeat, powerful and actually features one of her best singing performances. Of course she's still on that "GRRRR ANGRY GIRL POWER!" thing, but whatever works, right? This is how you do dance-influenced pop music right.

http://img.maniadb.com/images/album/714/714601_1_f.jpg

If you still think T-Swizzle is still a country artist and not a full-blown pop princess, this song should've quelled any doubts. A pounding beat and a super infectious chorus make this one of Taylor's best songs. It's a different type of music from her, but she pulls it off extremely well. Note to self: do not break up with Taylor Swift.

Also: this song has had some pretty sweet pop punk covers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZNkKk-1Wbs)

http://djmastersworldwide.com/blog/wp-content/plugins/rss-poster/cache/fb33f_keha-17.jpg

No, Ke$ha still isn't the best singer in the world, nor is she the best "rapper" or whatever you want to call her singing style. But I guess being BFF's with Wayne Coyne has paid off, because this song has more integrity and better music than pretty much anything she's done in the past. I think she finally understands that she doesn't have to be a joke 100% of the time and can actually take some pride with her music. Catchy as sin!

Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWNaR-rxAic)

http://i49.tinypic.com/1zvafli.jpg

Here it is, the biggest song of the year - especially for a first time hit. If this song wasn't stuck in your head at least once this year, then you're a goddamned liar. The entire song is so sugary sweet that it gives me cavities and the chorus is the catchiest thing ever written. The model pop song for 2012.

Neon Trees - Everybody Talks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5G9tIe84lE)

Rejoice, for instrument-based/actual band-based pop music is back! Well, maybe not fully, but Neon Trees released one of the best traditional pop songs in so long. It's catchy, upbeat and is on actual instruments! Super refreshing and super fun. Their other couple of singles are pretty awesome as well, so let's hope they stay around a while!

Train - 50 Ways To Say Goodbye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSBFehvLJDc)

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6e4ydmBMB1qgt1lg.jpg

Let's be real here for a second - Train is basically pop music for my Dad. But after literally falling off the face of the Earth after their huge year back in 2001 (11 goddamn years ago), they came back out of nowhere with a few really great pop/rock songs. Although their other big song this year, Drive By, was also really good, 50 Ways is funny, upbeat, catchy...pretty much everything a good pop song needs to be. Its Mariachi band backing track adds to the Southwest flavor that Train has always had, too. THAT'S how you do it, Maroon 5!

Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-fA-gBCkj0)

http://i48.tinypic.com/2em3k07.jpg

Sneaking in near the end of the year, I remember hearing this song for the first time on the radio and thinking "Wow, when was the last time this pop station played Sting?" Bruno Mars is only getting better and better as a singer, and his dance-y stuff has always been good. This is just the icing on the cake so far. Impossibly catchy and fun to sing along to. Insert Tyler, The Creator reference here.

One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJO3ROT-A4E)

http://i50.tinypic.com/33aqfk1.jpg

One Direction is the only comeback boy band that gets it. "What Makes You Beautiful" is a fucking great pop song - it's catchy, it has stupidly sweet lyrics, and each guy in the band actually can sing (at least in this song) and putting it all together just makes for one of the funnest songs of the year. It's paper thin and hearing that opening chord makes every pre-teen girl in a 20 mile radius emit an ear-piercing scream, but it's GREAT.

Justin Bieber feat. Nicki Minaj - Beauty And A Beat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys7-6_t7OEQ)

http://i50.tinypic.com/2mg096g.jpg

I can't believe this is the same Justin Bieber that released "Boyfriend" and "As Long As You Love Me" earlier this year. That driving bass line throughout the whole song and arguably Jay Beebz best singing on a single yet. And Nicki Minaj doesn't even really ruin the song! That weird instrumental break isn't the worst thing but it's probably the only thing keeping this out of my top 10. If Jay Beebz makes music like this from now on, he will be unstoppable.

Ellie Goulding - Lights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NKUpo_xKyQ)

http://i45.tinypic.com/ilbyhg.png

This is basically why I love pop music sometimes. There's no way this song would be on popular radio stations a few years ago. "Lights" is basically a continuation of one of my favorite pop songs ever, La Roux's "Bulletproof" - very synth and vocally driven, sorta-almost-downtempo pop dance music with great lyrics and a great beat. Ellie Goulding just hit everything on the nose with this song. It's hipster pop come to the mainstream, and it's fucking awesome.

The only songs on here that I like in any way, shape,or form, are Locked Out Of Heaven and Die Young(what a guilty pleasure this is).Sure there definitely not what I want to here on top 40 radio,of course,I may never here what I want on it,but it's a step in the right direction.Anyway, everything else on here I HATE (no offense to anybody).Taylor was good when she was country, sorry, but she's a pop artist now, nobody can convince me she isn't.

I'm trying to pinpoint what exactly the intention was with Gangam Style. It's clear that the koreans were trying to emulate LMFAO but i'm not sure if it was supposed to be a parody or if it was intended to be a hit song in the US. It seems more like the latter but I like to think it's the former.

Yikes, what were 'the koreans' trying to do, grandpa?

Maybe some people in this thread should be careful talking about a song that resonates for another culture like you have any fucking clue about it.

It's not supposed to be a parody of anything; it's a standalone song by a standalone artist.

Alright maybe saying 'the koreans' was a little silly of me but i'm just saying it seems awfully similar to LMFAO and other shit like that.

It's still ignorant to say that they're just ripping off American music. K-pop is a HUGE part of South Korean pop culture, with its own history, trends, styles, and so on. And I'm pretty sure PSY has been around a lot longer than LMFAO.

I know he's been around for a while, and maybe his old stuff is just like Gangam Style which would make me completely wrong.
