Hey all, I know I haven't been around a ton this year, but perhaps some of you will still see some value in reading about my 2012 in stuff. Albums first, then live performances and movies, and hell, maybe some other stuff too.

First post, about my 10th favorite album of the year, is coming today.

Great album, hopefully it gets them more recognition. Best new US black metal band to come on the scene since Cobalt. Descended Lamentations and Convict All Flesh are godly. The x2LP edition with new cover and remastering is supposedly in the works by Pesanta Urfolk.

Can't fucking wait for the Pesanta Urfolk version. Gonna be first in line to preorder that bad boy.

I disagree, I think Fell Voices deserves that honor. But ironically they're like Ash Borer's little brother.

This is a very fine album though, and has an identical spot on my list at the moment. And it's still growing on me.

Hmm, best USBM band to debut since Cobalt's debut? I might go with Ash Borer too, but there's a case to be made for several others.

What kind of turntable do you have DethMaiden?

Right now I'm fucking with this guy:

But as with every broke dude, I'm pining for a few couple-grand audiophile systems at all times. ;)

Those last 3 are all albums praised by my friends that I have been meaning to check out but I haven't even gotten around to any of them. And I'm sure I'll like them all.

If you like hardcore-influenced, vaguely Springsteeny garage rock, it's been a fucking incredible year.

Brad, I'm curious why you don't like Cloud Nothings? (I saw your blog.) Attack on Memory is my favorite album of the year, and I don't even like that style that much. I also didn't really like The Men or Japandroids, which ironically enough are the two bands most commonly used in the same sentence as Cloud Nothings.

DethMaiden
12-04-2012, 12:00 PM
Eh, I just don't find them particularly interesting. They do what they do fine. They were kinda bad live, but I don't totally hold it against them given they were playing through a rainstorm. They just don't really click with me.

I dig so many of Aesop Rock's beats but I find his rap style completely boring and have never been able to enjoy a full album by him. I have the same problem with MF Doom (except Madvillany that will always be a classic).

I haven't listened to all of Skelethon, but what I have heard I thought was great. The production is top notch.

Aesop Rock has always been one of my favorite MCs. I love his lyrical style and he puts on a good show too.

Blasphemy.

If it wasn't for Death Grips, Skelethon would be my favorite hip hop album of the year by far. I think it might actually be Aesop's best album, it definitely is production wise. I didn't know that chick who raps on Crows is the girl from Moldy Peaches. That's pretty cool.

Call it "punk" and it's fine, call it "garage rock," and it's a problem. Genre tags don't mean anything. Deal with it.

I can't really say I was shocked by this album. I kind of saw this direction coming. Though I will say that it was half better than I expected.

Here's a (maybe) less controversial one for those inclined to the heavy.

I thought you had lost all interest in stuff this heavy. Nicely done. You can stick around for a while longer. :D

DethMaiden
12-06-2012, 12:34 PM
Dear God no. I listen to stuff this heavy (and heavier) way more than I listen to the other stuff I'm interested in. It's just that bands this heavy are rarely this interested in being interesting. ;)

I still see new metal albums as homework assignments and end up listening to hundreds of them every year. It makes the signal to noise ratio pretty rough, but you know when I fall in love with one, it's because I absolutely fucking love it. See: the metal entries on this very list.

I was going to leave it alone, but the way your comment was worded gave some room to be a wise-ass so I rolled with it.

mastodon421

On Book Burner: The reason you liked it so much is that reason I don't love it. It's not as experimental or riff-based as their older stuff, which is what made them stand out from other grind to me. Don't get wrong, It's still a good record, but it lacked the depth that made them really exciting to listen to.

Are you seriously saying Prowler is more riff based than Book Burner?

No, I haven't heard Prowler in the Yard in it's entirety to be honest. I was talking about Terrifyer and Phantom Limb, I should have said past two albums in my initial comment.

Something was noticeable. For a non-musician who knows zilch about these things, it's hard to point out directly what something like that is.
