Listening to the VHOL promo. This album kicks as much ass as I was expecting. I don't think I'm ever going to forget me and Harry from Slough Feg cracking huge smiles like we were small children entering a toy store for the first time when we heard the song Arising all the way back in January. This album's great from the first listen, and it gets better and better with every play. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a record start to finish this much, there isn't a single song I want to skip when listening front to back.

Great album, after a year of anticipation. I'd say it delivered and then some. It will be a miracle if another record snags AOTY from it. Been blasting it all day since I received my copy earlier. Arising is definitely a highlight. If you love old school heavy and thrash metal there is absolutely no way you could hate that song.

New Uncle Acid is also amazing, turns what they started with Blood Lust and makes a flawless record out of it.

It's not metal but the bassist of Suicidal Tendencies' new solo album sounds like it's gonna be pretty cool.

Officially my new #1 most anticipated album of 2013:

"I have just completed the final mixes of the first album from my new project WITHERSCAPE.
Fans of my 'Moontower' album and the catchier parts of EDGE OF SANITY won't be disappointed!
I sing, both clean and growl, play drums and keyboards. Ragnar Widerberg plays all guitars & bass and has co-written almost all the tracks with me."

What does everyone think of the new Terror? I'm digging it for sure. Not quite as much as KOTF, but it's a damn good album. Weird though, I could've swore I read somewhere Terror advertised this album as their most straight-up hardcore. It's definately not, as IMO it's their second most metal behind KOTF. The Most High is a sick song.

Been blasting the new Vulvectomy. Italian slam band. Music is great, lyrics aren't the best, but they're better than most slam vocals, which are nothing more than fart noises.

It's fucking great. Not as great as KOTF but in my eyes its hard to top that record as its one of / if not my favorite hardcore record ever.

All the new songs are catchy as hell though and within the last week I've listened to the cd at least 50 times.

I wouldn't say it's so mediocre that its painful but it is... well, hilarious

in other news... I've reached that inevitable point where the work required in discovering new music > the pleasure in enjoying new music... so there's that, I guess... woe is me and all that not-so-fun stuff...yippee.

Finding new music never felt like work to me. The list of artist I plan to check out grows at a faster rate than I can listen to all of them.

Yeah I don't have time for people who think finding new music is "hard," c'mon dude, you're reading a blog post (actually, probably just a HEADLINE to a blog post), typing a band name into Spotify, listening for 30 seconds and deciding if you wanna keep listening. It's hard work the same way being a puppy-petter would be a terrible job.

I've heard about 50-55 titles I've really liked this year, pretty insane. The stuff I'm most excited for that I have NOT heard yet, though:

Deafheaven - Sunbather
Kylesa - Ultraviolet
Church of Misery - Thy Kingdom Scum
Exhumed - Necrocracy
Man's Gin - Rebellion Hymns
Mouth of the Architect - Dawning
The National - Trouble Will Find Me

Yeah I love checking out new stuff. The artist doesn't always click with me clearly, but it's always an exciting process for me regardless of the quality of the music.

I think my top 5, in no particular order, would be something like:

Lightning Swords of Death - Baphometic Chaosium
Nails - Abandon All Life
Suffocation - Pinnacle Of Bedlam
magic circle - Magic Circle
Bring Me the Horizon - Sempiternal (deal)

I haven't heard a ton so far this year. It sucks not being right down the street from 2 record stores anymore :(

My Top 10 with 17 records heard so far. Still need to catch up on a few records and I'm sure things are going to get better with a plethora of intriguing release lined up for May and June.

1.Killswitch Engage-Disarm the Descent
2.Hatebreed-The Divinity of Purpose
3.Clutch-Earth Rocker
4.Suffocation-Pinnacle of Bedlam
5.Intronaut-Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words with Tones)
6.Rob Zombie-Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor
7.Coheed and Cambria-The Afterman: Descension
8.Tyler, The Creator-Wolf
9.Within the Ruins-Elite
10.The Story So Far-What You Don't See

Nomadic by Fallujah is also amazing and will more than likely be my favorite EP of the year.

Fair points, but the problem is the plethora of new music out there. If I dedicate myself to checking out new releases, I can't just check out some, I have to check out all of them. I have over 10 different blogs on my google reader; it gets tiring having to read over 100 posts a week. Some if the bands are pretty damn good, but most of them aren't. I can't simply listen to 30 seconds and move on... okay, sometimes I've made an impression on under 30 seconds, but much of the time I don't. But even if it did work like that, I'm not sure if I'd enjoy it any more. I go into this with the mentality if "shit, gotta clear out my google reader." You could say "don't subscribe to as many blogs," but then I'd be missing out on so much stuff! I usually do like the Buddha and opt for the middle ground, but in this situations, the extremes are the most logical path. If I hear about a killer album on here or somewhere else in the metalsphere, I'll check it out, but I'm not gonna look for them myself... I'm gonna let them find me. Obviously I should probably just change my whole mentality on this, on the work vs play aspect, but that's easier said than done, at least for me... It just gets boring and tedious and repetitive and it affects my enjoyment if the music itself. So there's that.

I have ZERO problem with how much music is getting released. I got a full time job along with my radio show and I still find the time to check out the music worth checking out.

It's about how much time you want to invest, that's all.

This album is so intangible compared to their others I can't like it.

And it was my projected album of the year coming into 2013. A serious step down from their 2010 album. :(

7. How To Destroy Angels - Welcome Oblivion
8. Furia - W melancholii (EP)

This is getting a lot of positive attention. People seem to think it's the best "occult rock" album of the year. Gotta say, Wolf People, Ghost, and Blood Ceremony's new records all shit all over it.

Nah. Not even close. Although I wouldn't doubt Blood Ceremony being better. But I don't really see Purson in that same vein. They're really more psychedelic rock with some elements of circus music, but not the same way stupid prog bands do it.

I mean occult rock is a stupid fake genre construct anyway so I'm not gonna split hairs here about which bands are and aren't really occult rock. ;)

The Purson record is just way too sleepy for me. Slow tempos, nothing really heavy, meandering song structures.

For sure, dude. I think it's something new and cool. Based off the first single, I was expecting the album to be really rockin' like Leaning on Bear, but I really like the slower, spacey stuff on the record. I like how it sounds psychedelic, circus-like and nautical. I don't feel it's trying to sound sinister like other bands that get stuck with the occult tag like Ghost or Blood Ceremony. It's more flower child than that.

DethMaiden
05-06-2013, 11:51 AM
This is true. And I do think being non-evil is a cool approach to so-called occult rock! The new Wolf People is probably my second favorite album of the year, and there's not one reference to the devil on the whole thing. Just lots of Sabbath, Fairport Convention, Dungen and weed. :horns:

Savages also just released their debut, Silence Yourself. Rad stuff, a noisier Warpaint w/ more post-punk influence. Got "Best New Music" from Pitchfork. I'm really enjoying Psychic Ills, too.

1. The Ocean - Pelagial
2. Anciients - Heart of oak
3. Ghost - Infestissumam
4. The Fall of Every Season - Amends
5. Vhöl - S/T
6. Light Bearer - Silver Tongue
7. Cult of Luna - Vertikal
8. Rob Zombie - Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor
9. Tribulation - The Formulas of Death
10. Killswitch Engage - Disarm the Descent
11. Intronaut - Habitual Levitations
12. Stone Sour - House of Gold and Bones part 2
13. The Eels - Wonderful Glorious
14. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away
15. Soilwork - The Living Infinite

Still need to listen to the new Darkthrone, and the new Altar of Plagues.

A friend of mine found the new DEP and it is fucking fantastic. It's def more in the vain of Ire Works than Miss Machine or Calculating Infinity, very melodic for a Dillinger album. But Greg really shows off his range and they kind of venture out of their comfort zone. There's still plenty of mathy goodness though. It's without a doubt in my top 3 thus far, along with the new Ocean and Ghost. I cant believe their hasn't been more discussion on how fucknuts amazing Pelagial is. But seriously though, the title track is fantastic, Nomad is super catchy, Leaving It All Behind is epic and See You On the Other Side is simply amazing. I just hope they can keep this momentum going and come out with another record in 2015. This album is a huge step up from Capricorn, so I expect the next album to be their masterwork if they can keep this up. Hail the bay, bitches!

I figure that what I'm about to say might be heresy to some die-hard Orchid fans, but I wish they'd give the gloomier sections a rest - they do a decent job with the Sabbath vibes and all, but they're SO much better when they're playing more energetic riffs IMO.

Yesterday I checked out the new Burzum album and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it a lot more than the last two albums. For those who are worried that it will be a repeat of Dauði Baldrs and Hliðskjálf, it's not. Those albums (especially the former) sounded like a terrible N64 game soundtrack. The songs on Sôl austan, Mâni vestan focus more on building atmosphere. Varg's comparison to early Tangerine Dream is not completely off base either. There are some moments where I can see the influence, although there is a much different feel to the music. I wouldn't call this album anything really innovative, but it is good for what it is. It could use more varied songs and I think adding field recordings to better convey a connection with nature would make it more interesting. I'm sure many people will just criticize it for not being metal, but go into it with an open mind and you might enjoy it.

I listened to the new Immolation today. It's solid but I expected more after that Providence EP. Indoctrinate is a monster track though.

I gave it a couple listens and I feel the same. It's a good album, but it's definitely a step down from Providence and Majesty & Decay. There are still some killer songs, but overall I think the songwriting isn't quite as strong.

I listened to the samples and a lot of it struck me as sounding like the self-titled. Do you get that vibe at all?

I've heard the new one six or seven times now and the album doesn't have that feel at all to me. It's a very good album and it sounds exactly like what you would expect AIC to sound like but it still has it's own feel to it, just like every other AIC album does.

I just heard a few songs from the debut Blazon Stone album and I think everyone will agree that Running Wild is back! This is even more of a RW worship than his other band's latest EP, Rocka Rollas' "Conquer". I'm going to give the whole album a listen later today, but this sounds amazing so far!

And now I just heard the new Rocka Rollas as well. It's pretty different from the Running Wild worship, but still insanely awesome. It's a completely intense speed metal assault :D

I gave the Power Trip record a bunch of dedicated listens this week. It's a cool album, and it's better than a lot of the newer thrash, but I don't think it quite lived up to the hype. Still probably gonna pick up the LP when it's out though, the artwork is too awesome to not have on vinyl.

I'll readily agree that it isn't straight thrash sure, but AOTY? Really? Maybe I'm just not getting something, but all the songs just blend together to me and none really stand out. They're all uniformly cool, but they all sound the damn same to my ears. For me anyway, the best album of 2013 is easily Earth Rocker so far.

Just listened to a few new albums...

Blood Ceremony - The Eldritch Dark: A little bit different from their last one, and I can't say I like it nearly as much. However, it's still pretty decent for what it is.

Burzum - Sol austan, Mena vesten: I was happy to hear Varg was going all ambient, and I think he did a great job at it. I wasn't a big fan of Umskiptar at all, so I'm happy about this one.

Kadavar - Abra Kadavar: Another one of those retro-ish stoner bands everyone's been telling me I should be loving and shit. It's ok.

Batillus - Concrete Sustain: Another change in sound since the previous album, but I'm loving this one. Currently in my top 3 or so.

Watched the Judas Priest Epitaph Blu Ray earlier tonight. Tom Allom outdid himself, this is the best production/engineering Priest have ever had, and one of the sickest live mixes I've heard ever. The band are also in good form, though I've seen videos of better shows from Rob than this one on the Epitaph tour. Scott ended up making the most fuckups though, and fails at landing a few fills right during Starbreaker. There's also too many goddamn camera cuts, it makes watching the movie fatiguing, which is already challenging since the concert is two and a half hours long.

You're right, it is a killer record. This is all pretty rough anyway, the order I mean.

The album as a whole is much more cohesive than Over the Top and Flying Tigers IMO. If you're going in looking for a single song better than 40 Deuces you're out if luck though. The album is a really strong start to finish listen, and the guitar solos are out of this world. Will Wallner's solos especially are basically orgasmic.

Based on this and Onioner's recommendation, I went and listened to most of the album last night. It's extremely energetic and very well written. If they had Wyatt, I know it would beat out Over The Top easily. While the vocalist is good, it's too easy to imagine someone who fits better singing on the record. Maybe he'll grow on me though.

Didn't want to start a new thread for this but Adult Swim released the lineup of artist doing tracks for this year's summer singles program and it's looking pretty sweet.

El-P + Killer Mike = Run The Jewels
Kitty prod by Hot Sugar
Metz
Dan Deacon
Friendzone ft Mykki Blanco
Autre Ne Veut
MadLib + Freddie Gibbs ft Karreim Riggins
Mac DeMarco
Lightning Bolt
Lil B
Marnie Stern
Captain Murphy ft Viktor Vaughn
Andy Stott
Pig Destroyer
Miguel

The El-P & Killer Mike song is already streaming. New Lil B and Pig Destroyer tracks are always a good thing, MF DOOM and FlyLo doing a song together is a dream come true.

I'm hoping for another Lil B rock song. California Boy was revolutionary.

Damn straight, California Boy was the most revolutionary thing to happen to rock music since The Beatles.

3. The National - Trouble Will Find Me
4. Coffins - The Fleshland
5. Deafheaven - Sunbather
6. Eight Bells - The Captain's Daughter
7. Cathedral - The Last Spire
8. Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
9. Inter Arma - Sky Burial
10. Batillus - Concrete Sustain

New Church of Misery is great. Probably my second favorite after "Master of Brutality". Both the Power Trip and Savages records are top notch as well.

Thy Kindgom Scum is alright. Nothing ground breaking, just Church of Misery as you know and love them.

I've only listened to the Church of Misery once now, but it's definitely a great one. It's more of the same from them. I'd put it on the same level as Master of Brutality right off the bat, but I'm definitely not enjoying it as much as The Second Coming or Houses of the Unholy just yet. Lambs to the Slaughter and Cranley Gardens, specifically, are great.

New Black Dahlia fucking rips! Their Beloved Absentee is such a killer song. :rocker: Moksha by Cloud Rat is also really great. New Bodom is surprisingly solid. New Jungle Rot is a bit monotonous, but has a couple good tracks.

Anyone check out the new letlive. song? Not sure how I feel about it. Last album was more intense.

Ehhhh, not a fan personally. It feels like they're trying too hard to make the new stuff seem crazier but it just falls flat honestly. Hopefully the rest of the record is good. Also, Jason is NOT good at rapping.

Also, new Power Trip was pretty good. I didn't like the new song so I was fearing the worst.
