Strange Cousins (IMO) was their weakest album I've heard from them. Even that, it was still not a bad album. If alot of other bands put that out, it would be a success. But for Clutch I expected a little better. Hearing that this was a faster album, based on interviews & the new live songs, I'm expecting something Blast Tyrant-y which was the 1st Clutch album I ever heard. If thats even half close to being true I'll be just fine w/ that.

Agreed with everything here. BT was the first I heard also, whenever the nice weather starts I always like going for walks and cranking that album on my headphones, such a great summer party vibe to me. Each Clutch album is different so I don't expect another BT but I'd love another feel good rock album from them in the same vain as that and some of their earlier ones.

Blast Tyrant is the manliest album ever made. When Neil yells the first words of Mercury you can actually feel your facial hair grow. I honestly don't expect Clutch to ever top Blast Tyrant but if they get to somewhere near a Robot Hive level again I'll be happy.

I like this. I also really like Strange Cousins more than most people, so I wouldn't mind if the album is in that style, but obviously I don't think it will be. BT is also one of my favorites, but I don't want another one. I'm hoping they blow my mind with whatever they did come up with, which I'm sure they will.

That's because the 2 released songs blow the absolute shit out of Strange Cousins. And Strange isn't a bad album, when you've set the bar so high its tough to top it. It'll be an easy lock for Top 10.
Pigtown Blues was just a 7" released that was made in between Strange & before Earth Rocker was started and it is not on Earth Rocker. The Onioner has a great interview w/ JP who talks about that a little bit (if you haven't read the interview, its a very great read). It won't be on Earth Rocker, and honestly I'm not sure how well it would have fit anyway.

Pigtown isn't on the new album. If you missed the single that came out a while back, you missed it for good.
And yes, Earth Rocker fucking rules. Top Ten easily. I love it a whole lot more than Strange Cousins, which basically bored me upon the first listen. It doesn't have the same epic scope that elevated Beale Street, Robot Hive and Blast Tyrant to all-time classic status, but it's awesome as fuck regardless.
Now we just need to wait for ravenheart to chime in and say that he hated Earth Rocker haha.

Exactly. Impressive to be on album #10 and going up each time you release a new album now. Not a ton that keep going up w/ every new album. And the ones that do (the majority) seem to suck that do accomplish that.
I bought my copy at Best Buy last Tuesday. Many may not agree, but this is my favorite Clutch album to date. Top 3 right now are Earth Rocker, Pure Rock Fury, Robot Hive/Exodus.

My thoughts as well.
I can simply not get into Clutch at all, but they seem like a pretty solid (and popular) band, so I can understand the allure of touring as their support for a while. The Sword doesn't have to worry about booking anything - just go around playing short sets and chilling in cool places.
But those fuckers haven't played a single Canadian date in support of Apocryphon yet - which I really, really want them to do.

If I recall correctly The Sword have extreme difficulties crossing over the border. They had to cancel their Heavy TO/Heavy MTL 2011 dates due to this anyways and have not been back since to the best of my knowledge.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was just the fill-in drummer that had difficulties and he's been gone for a while now.

Agreed, I've never seen them headline, only open. These type of bands rarely come to Montreal, and when they do it's opening or festival dates, it really disappoints me :( Baroness too hasn't headlined here since the Red album, and they're only doing a 40 minute Heavy MTL set rather than a headline date this summer. At least I get Kylesa next week.
Even if Clutch has to play a smaller venue, I don't understand what the deal is, maybe it's the French lol. Their biggest album to date and they still can't fit in a gig here. Sucks I wasn't able to make the trek to Toronto this Spring. Oh well, one day haha.

Goddamn that album actually slays (much more than anything else I've heard from them to date). Quite a different sound.
Are there any other albums they have like this one?
Blast Tyrant is the most similar to Earth Rocker, same producer as well. That's the album I started with and it blew me away. The next album Robot Hive/Exodus is in the same vain also, but a bit bluesier.
Elephant Riders is probably my favorite because riff wise, it's probably their best but people new to Clutch are usually put off by the vocals or production on that.
The self titled is a classic, whole album is really good, more spacey and stoner rock than what they are now though.
