Might as well do this in chronological order

Rules:

1) I am allowing bands that aren't metal in the strict sense like AC/DC, Van Halen, Guns N Roses, Cro-Mags etc. But don't go too far off of right field or I won't count that particular entry. Nothing wrong with Minor Threat, Black Flag, The Clash and Eric B. & Rakim, but that's pushing it.

2) You must have no less than 20 and no more than 100.

3) We're strictly doing LPs, but the following EPs/demos are ok because of special circumstances:
Morbid Tales
Anno Domini
Apocalyptic Raids

4) Entries can be posted here or sent to me by PM.

5) due date is 9/27.

So are the album votes weighted by their order or does every album on a list get 1 vote?

I need to do some brainstorming and make out my list.

I still threw in some albums that I discovered and came to love later on.

Double posting will not give you double points. ;)

and larv, thank you for clarifying, and no, neither of those you marked count. If you want you can switch them out for more appropriate albums so your points (and your over all list) doesn't lose their weight.

Edit: Pink Floyd doesn't count either.

I'm guessing Sentence of Death doesn't count for EPs?

I'll have my list up sometime this weekend!

You know, I originally thought a whole bunch of EPs with original material, including that one would be ok, but then the thought occurred to me that the list would become way too cluttered would get way too cluttered with that stuff. Part of the reason is that Morbid Tales did originally come out as EP, though overtime it's sold now as an LP. Other websites won't allow Morbid Tales on a greatest albums list because it was originally an EP, which I think is stupid, but what are you gonna do?

Anno Domini while a demo, was eventually supposed to be mixed and mastered into an album by Euronymus, but then we all know what happened there.

This was a lot tougher than I thought it would be. I tried to avoid thinking of just a generic "the most classic of the classics" and instead tried thinking of the albums that I find myself returning to the most often and the ones that really work as whole albums that create an atmosphere and really just work for its full duration instead of simply a given album with a bunch of cool songs. This was still really hard, since I really love every one of these albums and I had to drop a bunch that I really like in order to whittle it down to 50. I included 51 just in case JRA didn't want to count Appetite for Destruction.

1. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
2. Iron Maiden - Live After Death (Disregard this one because of no live albums)
3. AC/DC - Back in Black
4. Guns 'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction (just skip to the next one down if you don't want to count this one)
5. Exodus - Bonded By Blood
6. Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion

8. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast

I don't see how it's fucking retarded if an EP with only 4 songs doesn't qualify for an ALBUMS list. :eyes:

...Anyway, I was thinking I'd avoid the type of situation where the top of my list is just IRON MAIDEN IRON MAIDEN IRON MAIDEN but I'm realizing that with the limitations of "80s" and "metal," that is pretty much destined to be the case, so I am embracing it. Currently working on a word document I have, making sure the lower rankings on the list are nice and good. ;)

Don't be obtuse. 'Apocalyptic Raids' counts, and that only has four songs, and 'Queensryche' is at LEAST as classic as that, if not more so. It has two of Queensryche's classic songs at least, and they never appeared on any other release. The 'Queensryche' EP should definitely qualify for this list.

You're right, ordinarily it wouldn't be retarded. Except that some EPs of equal length and significance ARE included. So what's slightly retarded here is picking and choosing between EPs of all original material. Either they should all count, or they all don't. I think the only ones which definitely shouldn't are covers EPs, live EPs, and EPs that are basically just slightly longer album singles with more b-sides.

If you're going to count Rush's Moving Pictures, it really should. But whatever, I don't post here enough to argue or care. Also, there's other albums on my list that aren't really any more heavy/metal than that Journey record, you just either don't know or care.

I was considering arguing my case for Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse of Reason (I mean, if Moving Pictures counts... :eyes:), but this is JRA's idea and he's submitting the list somewhere else so I guess ultimately it's fair he decides even if we don't all agree.

Many objections have been noted though. ;)

I'm more interested in who the proverbial "big guns" are. By my count we have 17 lists submitted so far. That's hardly a desirable sample size if we want this list to represent MSL as accurately as possible.

I'm not butthurt, I just can't figure out for the life of me what the hell it is. Blue Murder? Thin Lizzy? If it's that then they count. They have enough metal cred.

Whatever it is, I don't think it'll get a second vote, but the reason I bring it up is you're essentially wasting votes on things that don't count.

Whatever I'd be replacing those albums with would probably be more obscure things that aren't likely to get any other votes anyway, so I don't think it really matters much. I don't really have a stake in this personally or emotionally, so I don't really think I care all that much about that.

Just out of curiosity thought: What makes Blue Murder OK but Whitesnake not? The music on both albums was chiefly written by the same guy, and the two albums basically sound exactly the same. If you're going to say it's because of the "reputation" Whitesnake has, you're basically admitting that a band's image and reputation are more important than what they sound like.

And either way, you still haven't found it.

Guess I misunderstood the way you meant that then. It was Magnum I was referring to all this time, but I realized in backpedaling through this thread which I hadn't even read before, that I have probably an equally un-metal album on my own list which has been on multiple other ones, but you haven't called anyone out on it yet. This is just STUPID. The fact that you're letting people include synth-pop 80's Rush records (which I DO like, mind you) but not a number of these bands in question that are 5x heavier and more aggressive proves that you're really only furthering your own agenda or playing up to your own tastes.

Here's the thing about Rush's Moving Pictures. There's still plenty of riffs on it and in 1981, there was a little bit of a drought in terms of rock records that fit the bill, particularly after the prolific year of 1980. Off the top of my head, you really only had Killers, Welcome To Hell, Diary of a Madman, Mob Rules and Fair Warning. Compared to 1980 where you had so much shit that people had to leave some albums off a top 10 of 1980, Moving Pictures temporarily filled a vacuum. At least until Signals came along and the sound was completely drenched in synth and Alex was sounding way too much like Andy Summers.

Point being, most metal bands with prog influences will still cite Moving Pictures as influential to them. Signals, not so much. Also I believe I only said Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures were allowed. Anything else after that, no dice (and I love Grace Under Pressure).

1) So if you're implying number of riffs makes an album eligible, I strongly suggest you put on that s/t Whitesnake album. Literally every song other than Here I Go Again and Is this Love have killer riffs - literally some of my favorite guitar riffs of all time are on that record. Both more numerous AND heavier riffing than appear on Moving Pictures.

2) Not really, see list posted. Second, how does a slow year make something more acceptable? Considering we're now talking about a 10 year span, who cares if one year was a bit slow? (Even though in reality, not sure it even was).

3) So influence makes an album alright? Need me to pull up the numerous interviews/articles I've read over the years where guys who formed (several quite heavy) metal bands after the mid-to-late 80s say that their first hard rock record was Pyromania? Hell, it was MINE, 18 years after it came out. Same goes for that s/t Whitesnake record honestly, it's a benchmark album of the hard rock/"hair metal" genre if there ever was one. I think this is a somewhat weak argument as is, but if you're gonna use it, I can counter with several albums that you have issues with.

Again, I just come back to the fact that you're trying to police something based on arbitrary rules that are based on your limited knowledge of something. If you're going to be at the helm picking and choosing what can and can't go on, you can't be making exceptions for random things like that, and only going after the albums you happen to know off the top of your head are easy to disqualify. Hell, I'm more offended by the fact that you're willing to allow some EPs, which in a way is the same issue. Hell, someone's already posted an EP on here that you didn't even catch because you don't even know it's an EP. Same as there's an album or two that I've seen people submit that are EASILY not any more "metal" than some of the ones you called out on my list, but you don't even know what they sound like. Why not just set a basic set of rules and just have faith on the people submitting to just keep it within the general boundaries?

1981 was huge.

Judas Priest - Point Of Entry
ACDC - For Those About To Rock
Def Leppard - High N Dry
Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love
Thin Lizzy - Renegade
Saxon - Denim & Leather
Riot - Fire Down Under
Raven - Rock Til You Drop
Tygers of Pan Tang - Spellbound
Accept - Breaker
The Rods - The Rods
Michael Schenker Group - MSG
Anvil - Hard n Heavy
Y&T - Earthshaker

Point of Entry is a terrible terrible record and anybody who says it's a highlight of 81 needs to be beaten retarded.

For Those About To Rock is a disappointment, though it can also be on a list.

I will ultimately allow Anvil, but fuck them too, horrible band that never made any sort of dent because they suck.

a good 30% of that is stuff only Eddie Trunk would remember.

I will say that I did forget about Crue and I can never remember whether Fire Down Under came out in 81 or 82.

There's a couple of other worthwhile one's there, but Moving Pictures was ultimately more relevant to metal than a good half of that list.

as for me all of a sudden not allowing Whitesnake? Jeff, you brought that on yourself by being a smartass and not telling me which one is apparently barely hard rock, and by me playing a guessing game and using process of elimination. I strongly suggest you take out most of the stuff you think barely qualifies and replace it with whatever Maiden, Dio-Sabbath, Dio, Riot and Savatage albums you left off, since those are more likely to make it anyway.

Let me put it this way folks, I know if there's a band that you think a stereotypical longhair Metallica worshipper would think is too "gay" "glam" "pop" or whatever for a metal list (Motley Crue withstanding), leave it off.

To be honest that Whitesnake album should've been on my list, I just completely forgot about it.

If you're not going to count that Pink Floyd album throw Whitesnake's self-titled in there somewhere and fill the spot.

It's not a matter of how much of the underground they know, it's which hard rock bands weren't heavy enough. Like I said at the beginning, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Thin Lizzy, Guns N Roses, Van Halen, KISS and the first two Rush albums of that decade all had that credibility. 98% of others didn't.

Just butting in here for a bit. I think this should be a metal and hard rock list. Many albums that are loved by metalheads and classic rock enthusiasts will be left out otherwise. I think if it's a band that could get posted on the main setlist forum, it should be included.

You seem to be forgetting this list is subjective. Some people just don't like Iron Maiden, or haven't gotten into them yet. It's not that big of a deal, so no need to be a dick to him.

Your man-love for Iron Maiden and hideous spelling is 100 times more embarrassing than omitting them from a best of the 80's list.

whatever man, but omitting Iron Maiden in an 80's best of list is plain ignorance, but really I was just half joking about it, like everytime a subject involving Maiden comes up. It's that guy’s list , he’s intitle of not liking them or not knowing them. It's my way of bringing it up.

and for my spelling I'm a fucking French from Québec Tabarnak, what you ontarians probably call a frog, je fais mon possible, mais des ostie d'anglais bouché dans ton genre qui cherche juste les poux je les emerde ostie, si té pas content mange d'la marde criss

I know you're a frog, motherfucker! And to be honest, you have better spelling & grammar than half the anglophones who post here. So for that, I apologize, you Iron Maiden fanboy! :finger:

Yeah! Where's the Anthrax, bro?! ;)

a-ha? You're damn right! Shame on you, hellawaits!

Of course I fucking know Iron Maiden. They just don't really do it for me. I can't get into Bruce's vocals and while I don't mind Anthrax occasionally, I can't sit and listen to a whole album without geting bored.

1. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
2. Pantera - Power Metal
3. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
4. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
5. Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
6. Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell
7. Megadeth - Peace Sells.... But Who's Buying?
8. Metallica - ...And Justice For All
9. Anthrax - Among The Living
10. Death - Leprosy
11. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
12. Obituary - Slowly We Rot
13. Testament - The New Order
14. Sepultura - Beneath The Remains
15. Sepultura - Schizophrenia
16. Prong - Force Fed
17. White Zombie - Make Them Die Slowly
18. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman
19. Dio - Dream Evil
20. Exodus - Fabulous Disaster
21. Annihilator - Alice In Hell
22. Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning

Tried to be as varied as I could. I regard all these albums on equal footing, more or less, so it came pretty easy. Think I represented most of what was good in the 1980's for metal.

You should release the list in some fancy chart form. I think they now have a topsters generator where you can put in 100 albums.

EDIT: here it is http://top100.topsters.de

Honestly, I'm thinking about scrapping this and moving onto the 90's instead. Metal is more clearly defined there.

All I wanted was an 80's metal list that had Rush, AC/DC and Van Halen on it, but that was just too much to ask I guess.

Van Halen 1 and 2 came out in 78 and 79 respectively. Persistence of Time came out in 1990

Fair enough. I guess my list is just 40 albums then.

Sepultura – Beneath the Remains
Sepultura – Schizophrenia

Wow, I didn't know you ranked these albums so highly on your list, let alone liked these two albums that much. Kudos my man! I personally think everything Sepultura came out with from 85-93 is stellar, but skiz-beneath-arise are the 1-2-3 KNOCK OUTS imho :rocker:

Of course man, those albums are landmarks of the genre! I go back and forth between which one I like more.

Yeah man I feel you on that one. One thing i love about those two records is how radically different Max's vocals changed. In "Schizophrenia" he sounds like a demonic parasite, but in "Beneath the remains" he sounds like a straight up young brazillian dude in his early 20s with a thrashy voice and bad english. Some don't like it, but I love the super gritty production on Schizophrenia, goes really well with the atmosphere, as well as max's demonic voice.
