Do you work with middleschoolers or somethings?

No, just a guy who is so opinionated that he will make ridiculous statements to make his point. In this case, his point is that he doesn't like Led Zeppelin.

Snow blowering my driveway, even though I didn't need to. I bought the thing last year and used it once, for ten minutes, after I'd spent three hours shovelling my car out to go buy the damn thing.

It's definitely true, and something I have a real grievance with, I think rightfully so. Buddhism is one of the few legitimate religions. Of course, Buddhism is an atheistic religion that has the Oriental, relativistic attitude built into it that doesn't exist in the western/monotheistic religions. To observe something as completely lame and superficial as k-pop contribute to its demise is sickening.

Just watched the episode of the first season that's all flashbacks of the main characters' pasts, and the hospital scene has a voice on the PA which sounds like the voice in 'I Remember Now' saying the same line, "Dr. Davies telephone please. Dr. Davies, telephone please".

Finally made it through all my Christmas albums. Here's how I rank them plus a little blurb on each.

1. Inquisition – Obscure Verses for the Multiverse (2013)
This was fantastic. I was enjoying it a lot but the guitar work in Master of the Cosmological Black Cauldron, Joined by Dark Matter, Repelled by Dark Energy and Inversion of Ethereal White Stars sold me on it. When I heard that guitar work in the first verse of Inversion of Ethereal White Stars I knew this was in my top ten of the year. It’s funny because last Christmas I got Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm and it was probably my favorite album from that haul.

2. Gorguts - Colored Sands (2013)
Great album. The only complaint was that it was a little to long. I’d scrap that orchestral song in the middle (because I honestly thought it was terrible), cut a few minutes off a few songs and move Absconders to the final track. I was expecting something totally different and was pleasantly surprised.

3. Deafheaven – Roads to Judah (2011)
This was a good album but it just peaked to early with Violet. Everything after that song was secondary. It could’ve been longer.

4. Municipal Waste – Hazardous Mutation (2005)
Municipal Waste…listening to this I just want to see them live again.

5. Rotten Sound – Cursed (2011)
I was expecting something dirtier but I still really enjoyed it. It was cool to hear L-G Petrov on one song.

6. Mysticum – In the Streams of the Inferno (1996)
This was a fucking weird one. I heard “industrial black metal with a drum machine” and was expecting something like Blut Aus Nord. Instead I got black metal with a drum machine. Literally. Vocally it’s the closest to Emperors ‘In the Nightside Eclipse’ as I’ve ever heard. Like, carbon copy. Musically it’s a lot more “basic” than that, maybe closer to early Mayhem. But the drums are like a Scooter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTuUDBT7tYE) album. Very odd. It may have been better with real drums but then again the poorly programmed drum machine set it apart from everything else. I got the recent re-release and the pictures in the booklet are fucking hilarious.

7. Neurosis – Honor Found in Decay (2012)
This was just okay. Like every Neurosis album since 2000 songs start off slow until they reach an epic climax for the last few minutes. When it was over I was just like, “yup”. The artwork is fantastic and really puts you into the mindset for the album.

8. Delirium – Semantic Spaces (1994)
This is an album I heard fifteen years ago and finally got my own copy of it. I enjoyed it more fifteen years ago. It sounds really dated now. The songs with vocals are great, really great, but there are a few instrumentals in the last half that just drag on to long.

9. The Dillinger Escape Plan – Ire Works (2007)
This was just okay.

10. Alice in Chains – the Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013)
This album just didn’t do it for me. It was just too long. I think a few more listens may be in order.

11. Deftones – Diamond Eyes (2010)
Nothing on this album jumped out at me. It was good but forgettable.

12. Septicflesh – the Great Mass (2011)
I had high hopes for this album, last Christmas I got their 2008 album Communion and loved it. This album has better orchestration, better sound and better production. But it just doesn’t have catchy songs. There’s a couple good songs towards the beginning of the album (The Vampire From Nazareth and Pyramid God) but by the end I was bored to tears.

13. The Dillinger Escape Plan – Operation Paralysis (2010)
This is by far the worst album I’ve heard by the Dillinger Escape Plan. It too far removed from their debut for me. To much piano. Not that there's anything wrong with piano but how can the same band that wrote this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi2uETFYybE) write this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXGinFnJnfM&list=PLF9D2BD03D5BF9290&index=10)?

I'm looking for something to beef up the sound from my TV/blu ray/Xbox etc. but don't have room from a proper set of speakers.

I understand that, but I hate most is when some venues are wishy-washy between all ages events and 21+ events. Of course, I don't understand all the nook and crannies of running a bar, but if you can afford to host some all ages events, why not make them all ages events. Again though, I'm ignorant of what it's like to run that kind of establishment. If anybody can fill me in, that'd be cool.

That's a somewhat legitimate risk, but do you think putting age restrictions on shows is a legitimate way to deal with that risk? I just think there's better ways of dealing with it than prohibiting all underage kids from attending.

Also, c'mon, man. Prohibiting 12 year olds from driving is completely different than prohibiting them from attending a show. Do you think the risk of letting 12 year olds go to a show is nearly as dangerous as letting them drive?

So what's your better way of dealing with it? Give kids a fitness test to make sure they can deal with the rigors of a metal show? Base it on facial hair growth? I'd love to live in your concert-goers' utopia, but kids aren't allowed to do certain things for a reason.

And you know what? Based on what I was like when I was 12, behind the wheel probably would be a safer place than a mosh pit for me. I was like 6' and 130 lbs. I would have gotten snapped like a twig in a mosh pit -- I was probably smart enough to control a vehicle in average conditions.

Also, there's that whole liquor license thing that Mankvill mentioned as well. Drunk kids, while entertaining are generally frowned upon. I mean, you could do the age cut-off at some arbitrary age like 16 but then you have to do armbands and security checks at every single show. Keep it simple and just go with the drinking age. Concerts can be dangerous places.

Most of these kids we're talking about that are being "discriminated" against in the case of 21+ shows aren't 12. They're in their late teens. Whether or not we should see pre-teens at metal shows is a whole other story. We're mainly talking about 16+ kids at bar shows.

Yeah, granted but what I'm asking is where do you draw the line if you allow 16 year-olds in every show? Then all the 14 & 15 year-olds will get upset! All-ages shows aren't going to happen all the time because promoters/venues make less money off of them and they cost more to run.

This. That is why that hardcore scene here in Chicago has sucked to me the last year and a half.

For a while most venues that could host either all ages or 17+ hardcore shows banned them because of the chaos so the main promoters for the shows booked all hardcore shows at one venue that was only 21+.

Thankfully now one venue has unbanned hardcore shows and they are booking some as 17+ now.

It wasn't because anyone got hurt its because the venues didn't want all the pits and diving.

Alright, that's a good point. You do have to draw the line somewhere... I'd just rather not draw a line at all. Let's just agree to disagree. I'll live in my idealistic utopian fantasy world, and you can live in the real world :(

However, I will say one thing, that I don't know how many 12 year-olds would want to go to these shows (or if their parents would let them at that age), or if they'll be dumb enough to even enter a moshpit knowing how tiny they probably are.

It was one of the best shows I have ever been to! It was like a dream come true to see Phil and Rex play those Pantera songs! Especially 5 Minutes Alone!!! I'm so happy I went!

Also, Kirk Hammett was there. It was cool seeing him rock out the entire time. Especially when they did the Slayer songs.

Just interviewed Mike Scalzi for a Slough Feg article. 1 hour and 50 minutes of what may be the coolest conversation I've ever had. Topics covered: the awesomeness of Brocas Helm, the awesomeness of Raven, the lameness of Diamond Head after the 80s, the pluses and minuses of technology from an educational standpoint, engineering, the birth of the current Bay Area metal scene, and of course a bunch of Slough Feg-related stuff. There are awesome people, and then there are guys like Mike Scalzi of Slough Feg and Bob Wright of Brocas Helm.

Thank you!! Although I should clarify, by "legit audio engineer" I mean working in the pro-audio hardware (and maybe software depending on how I'm needed) sector as an engineer. I should be helping develop some pretty rad products from 9-5 on the weekdays, and hopefully continuing to help out with recording sessions in the Bay on the weekends. I set up my PS2 and Final Fantasy XII last night to do this level grinding trick then went to bed. I expected to wake up today with my characters having gained forty to fifty levels overnight. My PS2 is old and has a problem with the controllers, so it pauses at random. So I woke up today with my characters having gained...three levels. The system paused about forty five minutes after I went to bed and stayed paused for eleven hours.

Thing is, my PS2 is so old I don't care about leaving it on. So I told it "fuck you then, you get to stay on for two straight days". I un-paused it and made it get back to work.

Also it was just announced that Zack Farewell of Grayceon is the new drummer in Giant Squid and has been working in their new material with them. So the new Squid record is gonna absolutely melt faces.

This confuses me. I thought that Chris Lyman, who was on The Ichthyologist and is still close friends with Aaron and Jackie (not to mention business partners with them in Cotton Crustacean), stepped aside so their original dummer (name escapes me right now, but he was a beast) could step back into the role. Now, he's out, Chris is still out, and they're having Zack pull double duty with both bands.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Zack as a drummer and he might well be the best of the three, but I guess I'm just surprised at the move. I thought they had what they wanted.

At this point, the only reason for Grayceon to exist is so Jackie can write songs that aren't about sharks. :D
