That's all I got for now, tune in for updates.

Dude, don't joke about that. You're ruining an amazing artform by pairing it up with some trendy asshole band that is just fucking noise.

Seriously, don't ever disrespect Merzbow like that again.

Sonar's closing, and there's three possible new locations for the fest, all still in Baltimore. The new location will be announced either this or next month, and the first round of bands might be announced as soon as next week!

It'll more than likely be at Rams Head or Ottobar

The reason I doubt it'll be Soundstage is because they really can't close off any of the streets surrounding the venue because it will seriously mess with traffic flow.

I hope it won't be at Ottobar; it's smaller then Sonar and the last thing MDF needs is to be more crowded. Too bad Rams Head has been ruled out as a location, that seems to be the perfect place to have the fest if they got a larger headliner like King Diamond to play. Guess i'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah I was thinking that earlier, that's a major area of the harbor.
I've never been as far north in Baltimore as the Ottobar. Is it similar to the area of Sonar?

BlashyrkhMR101
07-10-2012, 09:21 PM
I don't live in Baltimore but I'm all of 30 mins from it so I've spent quite some time there and there's no way it would be at Ottobar, too small. Soundstage probably not since that also is a surprisingly small venue with way too much emphasis on the VIP shit, not to mention it would kill the outdoor stage. Rams Head Live seems to be the only viable option due to it not actually being on a street, but sort of in a walking area for pedestrians. You would of course have the issue of all the bars around it that play "club" music, having to deal with death metal at full volume outside of their bar. I'm sure the guys will make a good choice but I hope it's not the goddamn Ottobar.

Yeah MDF has been getting more packed every year. Ryan and Evan are very good when it comes to organizing a fest like this and I think they're aware that they need another venue the same size, if not bigger than the Sonar.

idrinkwine732
07-11-2012, 08:07 AM
They're probably going to go bigger than Sonar. It's one of the biggest attractions to a place like Baltimore and the city LOVES them for hosting it. I bet it gets to a bigger club that can still accommodate two street stages. I don't know Baltimore well, but I'm sure there's a venue that fits.

I'd love to hear the decision-making behind something like this, because the organization for this must be really fucking tough to coordinate.

I'm wondering how Carcass is not a headliner though. Even though they did those two reunion tours they would still be a big draw. Maybe they have even bigger bands up their sleeves? King Diamond seems like a logical choice. But anyway... seeing Carcass playing a short set would kind of suck, unless you weren't that familiar with them. When they play short sets they mainly focus on Heartwork, and while I think it's a great album, I'd rather have some more early stuff.

Well I could see Venom getting pissy if they weren't announced as a headliner, kind of how Morbid Angel did this year. If Carcass isn't a headliner, they'll definitely be in the slot before the headliner on one of the days and will have an hour long set.

Stay tuned for an announcement in September that will include additional headliners for next year's fest, including the headliner for the Thursday show.

Regarding the venue information for next year, we are still sorting through our options and weighing out the pros and cons of each. There's a chance that we'll be ready to post the info before the end of August, but be aware that this could trickle into the first half of September. As of now, we do intend on keeping the fest in Baltimore close to hotels.

We plan on having both the venue information and billing complete before the end of September. Tickets will likely go on sale around the first of October, but stay tuned for a precise date.

Neither Exodus nor Converge are odd choices. They've had plenty of thrash bands in the last two years, and there are usually a few hardcore bands thrown in the mix (see Coke Bust).

They will probably play Incarnated Solvent Abuse.

I'm really hoping they do another tour after MDF. It seems unlikely that they would put all of their bands on hold to rehearse for a single show, so I think there's a good chance of something happening.

I like Heartwork and I'd like to hear the songs live, but it's lame as fuck to play 1 or 2 songs from Necroticism and 1 from Symphonies. Even lamer that Bill only does his vocals in Reek Of Putrefaction, Jeff does the other ones

Like most people Heartwork was my introduction to the band and I still really like the songs but as my tastes progressed towards grind and such my interest shifted towards Symphonies.

We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.

In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.

The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will allow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.

We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.

This is basically the best of all possible outcomes. Sonar was indeed perfect for MDF, glad they're staying there, especially since that means I can just book at the same hotel again.

I actually thought the bands sounded good for the most part, even Nasum. What do expect with grind? It's not exactly easy to mix in live whenever you're dealing with blast beats and grinding guitars/bass, not to mention the vocals.

a friend of mine at the Morbid Angel show last night mentioned a very nice hotel as well called the Tramont. Apparently he and his buds have gone there the last few years. So theres another option.

Tremont*

It's a HUGE hotel, and good pricing. 2nd closest hotel from the Sonar.

You should like keep me updated with the hotel situation. I talked to Adam about it for a bit after the show last night, but he said that he basically wasn't doing shit until people already had their tickets.

Last year I stayed at the Brookshire Suites Hotel which was about a 12 minute walk from the Sonar. Priceline's "name your own price" came to $54 a night so it was perfect.

Last year we crammed about 6 or 7 people in a two bed room in the Comfort Inn. I know I paid $100 for three nights, so it wasn't bad.

Yeah, he wants to make sure that people are going for sure before he makes plans for people in our room. He just got me and the others first because we've gone the previous years and we're going for sure again. Once you get your ticket, let me know and I'll let him know.
