I think it works great. It fits the style to me. But then again, the vocals usually mean the least to me when it comes to the music. I am also aware there are not many people like me.

And on that note in 50 minutes, That Drummer Guy LIVE! is on InfernalRockRadio. I am showing off my interview with RED FANG Drummer John Sherman, and 4 hours of the best Metal and Rock you will hear on the radio!

Thanks man. That is the thing about doing something like I do, unless people comment, I don't know who is checking it out. I mean I do get ratings from the stations it's on, and I see hit counts from Podomatic and now Spreaker, but It never shows where people are tuning in from or who or anything, so comments is the only thing I got going for me until the show gets picked up in more places.

I'm glad you tune in. :rocker:

Week 89

Listening to this one now. Gonna type my thoughts as I get to the songs.

KXM- Gunfight - Decent tune but not quite heavy enough for me
Prong- Remove, Separate Self - Didn't really dig this
Eluveitie- Vianna - This was really cool. I've never listened to these guys, and I honestly probably wouldn't listen to it very often, but it's nice to hear stuff like this once in a while.
Alestorm- Wooden Leg! - Not my favourite song from the album, but the whole album is a masterpiece
Unisonic- Exceptional - One of the best songs off a very disappointing record. Kiske's vocals are sooooo good though.
Noveria- Fallen from Grace - Singer is pretty good. Wasn't really digging the music though. The guitars sound a bit too downtuned for this style. Gets more interesting once the leads come in.

In between these songs, you mention that Unisonic features members and ex-members of Helloween, but it's only ex-members :P

Goatwhore- Unravelling Paradise - Never listened to these guys before, but my brother is a fan. The guitars are way too quiet when there is blasting. The more death metal style vocals are well done. Definitely decent, but not really my style of extreme metal.

That's as much as I have time for at the moment, but I will most definitely come back to listen to more of this week because I want to hear Entombed A.D., Pathology, Vader, and Derdian.

Thanks for checking it out so far.

Yeah about Unisonic, I love Exceptional because of his vocals. I remember you were saying before how disappointed you were in the album. I like the songs I've heard, just wish there was more variety in the BPM. there is a lot of mid-tempo songs.

And my girlfriend gave me a ton of shit when I got that wrong about Unisonic. Not sure why I thought Kiske was still in Helloween, that doesn't even make sense . She loves Power Metal to death so anytime I get something wrong, she holds it against me for a long time.

Again, thanks for checking it out! :rocker:

Yeah Kiske is pretty much a god to me. Everything he touches becomes 100x better because of his involvement.

The problem with the new album is that most of the songs are either ballads, or slow boring songs without riffs. Even "Exceptional" fits the mold of their weaker stuff, but it's much better written than most of the other songs on the album.

Haha. No worries, I kinda get when you're doing things live that can happen. I remember in my only live interview to date I was a mess of "ums" and "uhs".

Again, thanks for checking it out! :rocker:
NP. Round 2 begins now, though I definitely won't get through too many songs before I have to head out.

Interview With Goatwhore's Zach Simmons - I think I skipped part of this in finding my old spot, but cool interview.
Goatwhore- FBS - This is way thrashier, and thus, way better than the other Goatwhore track. I could listen to this for sure.
Entombed A.D.- Pandemic Rage - The death 'n' roll is strong in this track. I've only heard Left Hand Path, and this is certainly a far cry from it, but it's not bad.
Pathology- Relics Past - This is one crazy breakdown to start the song. I have 3 Pathology albums and have never heard that strange of a breakdown, Sounds like the standard Pathology otherwise. I was worried they'd really lose it given how terrible the album name is, but this is pretty much identical to everything I own by them. I'll probably skip getting this record. And as soon as I say that, an AWESOME guitar solo shows up. With melody and everything. I might need to buy this now.
Vader- Where Angels Weep - If there is one old-school death metal band I've never gotten into, it would be Vader. With that said, this track is really cool. Lots of thrash influence here.

I'm gonna just start listening to these without commenting on every song though

I actually dig that you're doing that. It shows that someone is really paying attention to the show more then just saying "Hey, great job!" Or "I didn't actually listen, but cool I guess."

I've gotten better over the years with umms and uhhs in my interviews. Interviewing most of my heroes has helped with that. Although when I do it a lot now a days, you can tell I am nervous as hell.

Midnight- Degradation Love both Midnight and this song. Great pick to get it started.
Vallenfyre- Bereft There were some cool ideas in here but I wasn't really digging it.
Alfar- Across the Northern Storms I don't really listen to a lot of this, but this song was really cool. I would probably buy something of theirs if it were more widely available. The guitar solo was definitely the highlight.
MindShade- Fire Demon The breakdown in this song is really bad. Otherwise not a terrible song, but I didn't like the vocals.
Interview With Fallujah Frontman Alex Hofmann (Part 1) Skipped this because I'm not really a fan. Going to listen to the song though.
Fallujah- Carved from Stone Seems like pretty decent tech-death. Nothing special, but certainly listenable.
Transatlantic- Black as the Sky Way too out there for me. Vocals weren't my thing either.
Judas Priest- Dragonaut Was really interested to hear this as I didn't check out the new album. Sounds great to me. Just what Priest should sound like, and I say that as someone who isn't a huge Priest fan.
Yob- Nothing To Win Music was good, but I didn't like the vocals.
Grailknights- Holding out for a Hero Didn't like the intro, but totally awesome aside from that.
Lethian Dreams- Shades This was pretty decent. Not a lot of substance, but some great atmosphere. Big change at the end, which I think adds a lot to the track.
Marty Friedman- Sociopaths (feat. David Davidson) Everything I've heard of Friedman's solo work prior to this was disappointing. This was really different from what I expected, but I still didn't really like it that much. Lots of good turns, but some bad ones as well.
Dawn Of Destiny- Rising Angel Loved this other than the harsh vocals which felt forced. Great song nonetheless.
I will probably check out the rest later, as I want to hear that Skid Row track.

I love that you are actually checking out the show. It feels likes it is giving my showsome more legitimacy. Good or bad, I love feedback.

This week is a bit more of an experiment as my girlfriend and I have been having big discussions and actually a couple "business meetings" about what to do to make the show bigger and better. One suggestion that she made was about putting songs in a random order, or at least putting a couple songs that sound cool together, more than trying to do the stream of consciousness/roller coaster playlist that I've been doing since pretty much the start of my career. She does raise a good point about how not everyone can take 2 hours out of their day to listen to a show when it is on FM or streaming on the radio stations it airs on (Obviously with Podomatic and Spreaker, you can skip what you don't like) so I may be turning people off at first if they don't like Hard Rock/Power Metal/Prog Metal like I usually do at the beginning of the show, and the start of hour two is usually Death Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, etc. So it's good to mix it up the playlist to show off everything at different times and possibly keep people more interested.

Also the idea of splitting up the interviews if they go longer than a certain length. The Fallujah interview was 13 minutes so I tried finding a good point that felt natural to split the interview. I am normally the kind of guy who wants to hear an interview all the way through in one sitting, but I'm realizing that others find it a bit tedious to listen to if they aren't into the band, or if the interview is too long.

*Again, another reason why I love good and bad feedback. It tells me what is good and what can be improved*

There's other ideas that we have that I will be trying down the road, but I wanna do it one step at a time.

I think you may dig the new Skid Row, as someone not big into the Bach-less era of Skid Row, i dig the song a lot. I also mention in the show that I was one of the few hundred people who got to see this song live for the first time. it was right before the played the Rock USA show (or whatever that Oshkosh, WI fest is called) and the show I went to (in a town of 1,051 mind you) as a test audience. It sounded really good live and on record.

I would agree. Even as a guy sitting at my computer, I can find it hard to find 2 hours sometimes. I definitely like the idea of mixing it up more. With that said, I've only heard less than 2 full shows, but it sounds like a good idea.

Also the idea of splitting up the interviews if they go longer than a certain length. The Fallujah interview was 13 minutes so I tried finding a good point that felt natural to split the interview. I agree with splitting it up, especially if you aren't listening to it the way I was where you can skip what you want.

Awesome! I'm actually one of those guys that doesn't have much interest in hearing new Skid Row. They're great because of the songs Sebastian made with them, and that's why I'm going to see them. Still, I'd like to check it out only because I know they'll be playing new material.

Edit: Ok I shouldn't have said anything about Skid Row, that song was awesome. The vocals obviously aren't Bach level, but still pretty solid. I thought they were supposed to be bad after the second album?

It's time for a bit of an update about That Drummer Guy

As some may remember it was around this time last year that I got sick and put out of commission 7 months and slowly but surely, been recovering. I'm still not at 100%, days like today, I've actually been feeling ridiculously crappy from stomach issues (I won't go into detail, but use context clues to figure out whats going on).

Anyone who knows me knows that I am without a shadow of a doubt my worst critic. No one criticizes me or puts more pressure on myself, than myself. With all the stress I constantly put on myself, and being busy 24/7 this time last year, I got sick. But since March/April I have been slowly getting better and getting back on my feet. As of right now I am at least able to practice with my bands and do all the various tasks for being That Drummer Guy.

But that said, I have been a bit of a glutton for punishment. I have been getting to the point in the last few weeks where I have been overworking myself again and it is causing a lot of stress to my body again. yes, it is partly because I am creating it for myself to try to make the radio shows, reviews, interviews, website, and my bands to be the best they can be. And a couple weeks back I almost completely burnt myself out on everything.

My girlfriend saw this, realized that I was falling back into the hole I was in this time last year and has graciously decided to help me out with the business side of That Drummer Guy Industries. We are now working roughly 50/50 together. I am of course am the face of That Drummer Guy, host, interviewer, reviewer, etc; but Lynn is starting to take over the other aspects of the business. She is helping me with my PR, email duties, and is now helping me organize the playlists for the show.

Notice with that, I said show, not shows. As part of not running myself into the grave like I almost did last year, I am taking a couple nights a week to do absolutely nothing productive to save my own sanity. In the past I would work from when I wake up till when I go to bed thinking about what to do to improve what I am doing.

Part of that relaxation time is sadly taking a hiatus from Infernal Rock Radio. I love doing a live show, it is so much fun to actually interact with people listening to the show and being able to play anything from my music collection, but at the same time, it causes me to agonize over the playlist and who is listening and everything that does not involve actually enjoying doing a live show. So until I have the time to do a live show again, I will be just sticking to the syndicated show, That Drummer Guy Presents. I have to thank my girlfriend again for realizing and telling me that the live show was driving my stress levels to maximum capacity.

Along with that, I also tried doing an album review a day, which was causing a lot of unneeded stress on me. So after taking time to think about it, I'm not stopping the album reviews, but I will do them when the mood strikes. It could be several at a time, or once a week, whatever the case may be. Again, this is just until I find the time to make it a regular thing. But that also said, I will ALWAYS do the extra long album reviews at the end of the year that I ALWAYS do, because people know me for that.

We have also been having business meetings for the last few weeks to figure out the best way to make That Drummer Guy an unstoppable force, and the ideas we have will come to fruition down the road, Hopefully you guys will dig everything that will be happening in the near future.

Thanks for sticking around and enjoying what I do as That Drummer Guy, Every year has been getting bigger and bigger and I have no intentions to stop now!

Gloryful- Dream Blade - This was awesome. I'd definitely listen to this.

Hammerfall- Hector's Hymn - Even though I left off listening to this song, decided to listen to it again! No regrets. Best band in the world.
Arctic Sleep- Passage of Gaia - Fantastic drum sound. Not digging the vocals. I feel like this has Insomnium-esque potential, but isn't quite the right style. If this were heavier, I'm certain I'd love it.
Nachtmystium- The World We Left Behind - This was actually a pretty catchy song. I had never listened to these guys before. Can't really support them though given the current situation.
Stork- Given Away - This band name/song title combo gave me a good laugh. Music and vocals aren't doing it for me though. Not enough substance in the riffs. It's a bit hypnotic though, which I like.
The Kindred- An Evolution of Thought - Don't really like the vocals. Not melodic enough for a "singer" singer and not aggressive enough for extreme metal vocals. Never been a prog guy though.
Halcyon Way- Web of Lies - I had never listened to this band before, but for some reason I've always thought they were a female fronted symphonic metal band. Way off... There are some solid riffs here, and a catchy vocal line or two, but prog stuff doesn't really do it for me. It feels very Nevermoreish, though I say that with only little familiarity of Nevermore. Not a fan of mixing clean and harsh vocals. 99% of the time it doesn't work. Guitar solo is WICKED though.
Mater Thallium- Maternal Mortality - Don't like the whispered vocals. Or the singing vocals for that matter
Funeralbloom- Cherry Orchard - Same issue some of the other songs have. Too tame for my tastes. And then it randomly breaks into black metal. This section is better. I especially like the sort of hopeless feel it gives off.
Amberian Dawn- I'm Still Here - This woman has the voice of an angel. The music switches between awesome and mediocre. With enough time, I'm sure I would really love these guys. Turns out I've got a promo, so I will probably check this album out.
The Haunted- Psychonaut - The riffs are kind of underwhelming. I've never given these guys a shot before, but the song I wrote today has better riffs than this. Equally unoriginal though :P Not a terrible song on the whole though.
Aborted- Of Dead Skin & Decay - So heavy. I don't really listen to this kind of stuff, but it's so satisfying to hear once in a while. A good smash to the face!
Witchaven- Death Rides A Pale Horse - I've ignored these guys for far too long. Good to finally hear them. The opening riff has a very "Power Thrashing Death" feel even though it's quite different. The vocal changes are interesting. Pretty intense stuff. I don't know if I would listen to this often, but I'm glad to have heard them.
Blood God- Defenders of the Throne of Fire - Very different from the band Bloodgod that I had heard of before. Vocals are hilarious, but this is great otherwise. There's a nice Judas Priest vibe here.
Ascendancy- The Dark Side of Philosophy - Pretty good aside from the vocals.
The Autumn League- The End of Enmity - No real substantial thoughts on this one. Didn't really like it, but it wasn't offensive either.
Tankard- Fooled By Your Guts - This is my jam. I love Tankard! I wish this album was easy to find in North America. This band needs more love. I don't even drink but man Tankard is awesome!
龍5150- Just Keep Your Heart The music is great, but I just can't handle the vocals. It's too bad because this is really killer stuff.
Wolf- Shark Attack - Surprisingly I have never heard this band before but it's pretty good. It sounds like Accept with some power metal influences. I'm kind of glad I heard this because I probably would have bought the album if I came across it in a store, but hearing this now, I don't know if that would have been a great call. It's a good song, but there's so much great music out there.
Poisoned By Life- Burning - This band contacted me last week about their album and I just listened to it today and reviewed it. I've already heard this song twice today, so I'm skipping it, but it was the only track on the album that I really liked. Also skipping the Lady Gaga cover because it's 11 PM and I'm tired. And I don't know the original song anyways :P

Great show this week!

Crimson Shadows- Maidens Call - Big fan of these guys as you know. Glad you're starting the show with them! I hope their new album is the one that breaks them big!
Winterfylleth- Whisper of the Elements - Very cool song. Always wanted to listen to these guys but the long albums turned me off. The song itself is too long, but it never got boring.
Last Days of Eden- Paradise - I dig the opening symphonics. Singer isn't particularly great, especially because this feels heavily Nightwish influenced, but she's not Tarja. Likewise the male singer is no Marco. Still a decent track though because the chorus is really catchy.
Protean Collective- Caldera - Didn't really dig this. Too modern sounding for me.
Trey Williams Interview Part 1/2 - Skipped most of this because I'm not a DF fan but he seemed like a nice dude.
Dying Fetus- Dissidence - Drummer needs to lay off the blast beats. Decent song, but nothing I'd listen to often.
The Scintilla Project- Permanence - Never heard of this band, but I had no idea Biff was involved in something so intense. While I love his voice, I don't think it really worked that well in this song, especially before it gets heavy again.
Deterior- Gnawing At The Pit - Too much brutal, not enough songwriting for me.
In Flames- Dead Eyes - Never listened to this era of In Flames. I can see why people dislike it, especially coming from what they used to sound like. I didn't think it was awful, but I would never listen to it.
Scar for Life- Because I Can - Didn't really dig this.
Strikken- Scar Tissue - Not digging the random harsh vocals. Clean vocals aren't great either, and riffs are pretty standard.
Eluveitie- Sucellos - Not bad. Folk isn't my thing but this definitely was decent.
The Matador- Vaalbara - Really don't like this vocal style.
Youth Forgotten- Moral Soul Vocals and music didn't do it for me.

Gonna call it a night here. Will definitely be back for the rest because I need to hear that Gus G. track. Solid show thus far!

Are they really limiting tweets? It looked like you could just pay more for a better reach (ie: showing up in those suggestion emails)?

It's getting out of hand. My latest posts on Facebook are getting a reach of 30-80 people for a page with 1100+ likes. I just don't understand it. This is why I like everything, so I don't miss out on those updates. I'm surprised others don't do the same.

Fuck social networking. My band Dalla Nebbia has very minimal fans (under 400 I believe) and we have HUGE NEWS we have been/will be announcing for our second album that would mean more for more to see it, but almost no one gets to see it. It's really crushing those smaller bands. Should be a movement soon where they all just make "People profiles"

It helps a lot when you post statuses without links, and if you want to repost something, just repost it instead of sharing it. I experimented with putting links in comments instead of the post and it pretty much doubles and sometimes triples my reach.

Imma do a little review of what I've hard so far from last weeks episode...

Sanctuary- Frozen
Not bad! It was a bit too Nevermore-ey, which isn't a bad thing, but I was hoping for something a bit different. Definitely will be looking into this new album a bit more once it drops! Maybe even catch them on their CD release show here :D

1349- Cauldron
Hell yeah! I should be getting this in sometime this week, and from what I have heard, AOTY contender FO' SHO'!

Falloch- For Life
Mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. The music was cool, but just, meh, didn't do much for me.

Heidra- Betrayal
I don't remember this :(

Kamijo- Rose Croix
Weird... a bit too weird for my liking, and I like some weird shit

Black Crown Initiate- Withering Waves
This is a band I cannot decide on. The Clean vocal parts were great, but the harsh vocals kinda felt very bland and generic. Their drummer is an absolute beast, though!

Decapitated- Blood Mantra
I will be honest, I have never listened to Decapitated other than a few songs here and there. This wasn't bad, but felt SUPER bro-ee.

Eden Circus- Devoid Of Purpose
Don't remember :(

Necromancing The Stone- From Graves to Infamy
Weird sound for a death metal super group! Wasn't my style, but I'll need to check it out some more!

Escapethecult- Feel The Flight
Don't remember much, but dont think I enjoyed :(

SubRosa Interview

SubRosa- Cosey Mo
Wow! That's SubRosa!? I've never listened to them, ever, and just imagined them as a hipster whatever band, but this was actually really rad Sabbathy!

Appalachian Winter- Rise to the Heavens
Could not :(

Electric Wizard- Lucifer's Slaves
Not too bad! I can't wait to hear the whole album. Black Masses was pertty solid, so hope this one continues on!

Dynazty- The Northern End
The most generic Power Metal band ever, but really fun and rad! I'm sure TWATTY would enjoy them  . Reminded me a lot of Keldian.

the Prophecy 23- Video Games Ain't No Shame
Mr.Big- Gotta Love the Ride
I remember the Prophecy song, those guys didn't seem to know where they wanted to go with their sound... had some Devin Townsedn styled vocals too!, but I don't remember Mr. Big at all :(

Lyriel- Dust to Dust
I will reserve my comments :D

Bloodbath- United In Pain
I love the music on this, but I still cannot get into the vocals. I hope the rest of the album keeps the soild music :rocker:

Orange Goblin- The Devil's Whip
Not inspired by Motorhead AT ALL  . Great band, though. Almost went to see Millionaires instead of them a few years back

Ne Obliviscaris- Movement III: Curator
Pertty cool!!! The clone vocals didn't do much for me, but the rest of the song was great! Definitely going to look into them some more.

Don't have my good speakers right now, but going through this anyways

Emergency Gate- Infected Nightmare - Dug the harsh vocals, but not the cleans. 99% of bands I've heard that combine them mess one of the two up :( Not a bad song aside from that.
Enchant- Life in a Shadow - This song has some really cool ideas in it (particularly in the start), but it just strayed too far from metal, especially in the vocals.
Nightbringer- Et Nox Illumination mea in Deliciis Meis - [B]Now this is some truly evil stuff! Huge jump in styles from the last song, and while I'm not the biggest black metal fan, this is more to my liking. Definitely among the better black metal I've heard. The drummer is an absolute machine of blast beats.
The Francesco Artusato Project- 210 - Super awesome guitar opening. And the guitars continue being awesome after that. It took me too long to clue in that this is an instrumental solo project, but that sort of stuff is always welcomed by me.
Interview With All Them Witches 1/2 - Skipped this because I've never heard of them. Gonna hear the song first.
All Them Witches- When God Comes Back - Sounds sorta stoner/doomish. The music is pretty decent, but I can't get into the vocals.
Nader Sadek- Deformation by Incision - This was definitely more brutal/aggressive than I was expecting.
Ninth Circle- After The Rain - Sounds like power metal to me! I've listened to far too much power metal in the last month, so this is really satisfying right now.
Khold- Skogens Oye - I have never listened to these guys before, but they were recently announced for Wacken. I doubt I'd get to see them there since there are a lot of bands already announced I like, but I'm curious about this anyways. Vocals are great, and sound pretty similar to Abbath. The music is more straight forward heavy metal/rock that's a bit evil than black metal, which is really strange yet awesome. Although it then speeds up into something punk-like, which is also cool.
Northern Oak- The Gallows Tree - So this is what happens when folk metal goes wrong... Ok, only the "come follow" parts were really bad, but I feel like they're trying too hard with the folk parts.
Scar Symmetry- The Spiral Timeshift - Don't know if I've heard these guys before, but my brother is a huge fan of their old stuff. Starts off sounding like some weird alien death metal, which is wicked. Both the cleans and harsh vocals here are competent, but I don't particularly like the former.
Außerwelt- Return to nothingness - I don't know what this is, but I love the chill intro.
Soilwork- Forever Lost in Vain - Not a big Soilwork fan. This song isn't really an exception. My brother used to listen to all of these old melodeath bands, and over time, he just stopped following them, and hearing Scar Symmetry and Soilwork, I completely understand why even though I'm not a fan of their old work. In Flames is even worse, but why did all these bands go soft?
Falls of Rauros- Ancestors of Shadow - Another cool intro! The song as a whole seemed relatively devoid of action though.

Going to stop here for now because I'm familiar with a few of the rest of the bands and I know I don't like them, but another solid show! It sounds like I don't like a lot of this stuff, but it's solid music to work to. I wouldn't seek a lot of it out to listen to on my iPod, but you never know when you'll strike gold.

Again, thank you so much for checking out the show as much as you did.

As far as All them Witches. it's not normally stuff that I listen to or play, but when a touring band comes to me and asks if I'd be interested in an interview, I will always say yes. I unfortunately had to miss Arsis, Allegeon andExmortus because of that (I also almost got mugged that night before the interview), but it was still worth it to me.

Andyour last point, that's exactly why I love doing the show. You never know what bands are going to be a home run for someone listening. I always try to play something from a band that is willing to send me something to play (especially if they reach out to me first). Even if I am not the biggest fan of them, I will still show my support.

I definitely get this. I really feel interviews are the way to get noticed because it's 100% original content that is exclusive to your 'zine/show/metal promoting website. This is why even though I'm happy just doing reviews, I try to do an interview once in a while.

Sorry to hear you almost got mugged. Be safe man. No interview is worth almost getting mugged.

I'm with you here as well. I used to ignore a lot of bands that emailed me, but now I'm at the point where I always do my best to at least reply to them, and I'm reviewing more of their stuff than ever. I can only imagine how much it sucks to really work hard at something and be continually ignored by people. Even if I don't particularly like something, just supporting it is a good way to go. You playing this stuff on your show is a great idea, and I'm sure the bands appreciate it. Especially since you are willing to make huge jumps in styles.

Don't have time to get through the whole thing tonight, but hopefully I can get through quite a bit:

Claw- Alpha 13 - These vocals are not great, but the music is nice and thrashy. Man if these guys had a better singer, this would be absolutely wicked. Seems to slow down quite a bit, but the music is still pretty good.
Starkill- Winter Desolation - I know I've heard of these guys before, but I can't recall where. In any case, this is another thrashy start, but the vocals are quite a bit more aggressive. Big change with the clean vocals. I feel like this is a band where if I listened to them enough, I'd think they're brilliant. Quite interesting nonetheless.
Thomas Giles- Mutilated World - This was really not my thing. Didn't like the vocals, nor the general quietness.
Rigor Mortis- Fragrance of Corpse  This is my jam! I listened to the stream of the new Rigor Mortis a couple of days ago and it absolutely slays! This is one album more people need to be talking about.
Pendragon- Faces of Light - Really dig the pianowork in the intro, but the vocals aren't my thing. The guitar work is really killer though. It has a great jamming feel to it.
Breach of Silence- Silhouette - Really dug the opening guitar lick. Not a big fan of the vocals, but at least it's heavy. When the clean vocals come in: ABORT! ABORT!
Stealing Axion- Aeons - Not for me :/
Horrendous- Titan - Great choice. This album got a lot of hype and for a reason. Not the best song on it, but still quality stuff
Gonna cut it there for now, but I also just wanted to mention that the Exodus track you picked is one of the most insane and ballistic things I've ever heard. That song proves why Exodus still trumps 99.9% of thrash bands around today.

I'm not sure if I'll have time to finish this week's show, but you can bet I'll be tuning in for #100. Major props for doing this for so long! :rocker::party:

Terror Syndrome- My Next Victim - Vocals aren't doing it for me. Neither clean nor harsh.

"That drummers guy"

Scale The Summit- Origin of Species - The opening reminds me of that instrumental song from the bonus section of Guitar Hero III. Can't recall the name right now. In any case, this is pretty decent. I dig the guitar work.
Iced Earth- Diary - I've never really explored Iced Earth even though they seem like something up my alley. This song started out really different from what I was expecting, but then it built into pretty much exactly what I expected. Solid and very listenable, but nothing I'd buy.
God Forbid- Scraping The Walls - I really dig one God Forbid song that my brother showed me years ago ("To The Fallen Hero"), but I didn't really like this. The instrumentation is pretty solid, but the vocals are a turn off.
Periphery- Pale Aura - I dislike these guys. A lot. There's a running joke about these guys between me and some of my friends because at my University's metal club, all of the new people who don't really like any metal always put this band on, and once, when Wintersun's "Time I" had just come out, someone was playing "Sons of Winter and Stars", and interrupted it to play a Periphery song, and pretty much our only rule is to never interrupt a song someone else put on. So I don't take this band seriously :P
Cannibal Corpse- Make Them Suffer - Yesssss! Cannibal Corpse is awesome.
Paradise Lost- A Side You'll Never Know - Don't know if I've ever listened to these guys. The music seems chill, though not in an Insomnium way. Not the biggest fan of the vocals though.
Stolen Babies- Mousefood - Saw these guys live with Firewind. I think it made me like Firewind a lot more.
Devin Townsend- Save Our Now - I knew this guy was weird, but this just kinda makes me laugh. It's like Tobi with Avantasia: the guy does whatever he wants and his fans eat it up because it really is good. Even though I don't really like DT or DTP or SYL, I can tell this is pretty well-written, despite it not being my thing.
Kyng- Burn The Serum - I've heard of these guys, but had no idea what they sounded like. Pretty decent rocking/driving music.
Napalm Death- Everyday Pox - I've gotten a lot of heat for this, but I don't like these guys this much. It's partly the vocals, and partly the lack of straight forward death metal. This seemed like a decent song though other than the weird screeching noise. Actually this noise is getting more pervasive as it goes on.
Alestorm- Drink - I don't even drink and I'd sing along to this. An all-time classic.
Down- Ghosts along the Mississippi - Never listened to these guys before. I don't really like Pantera, though this is obviously different. Still not quite my thing though.
Firewind- World on Fire - I think within the power metal community, there is no more underrated band than Firewind. They're definitely well-liked as a whole, but I feel like they're always blown off amongst hardcore power metal fans because they're pretty heavy and not as fantasy based. In any case, I love Firewind and this is definitely one of their best songs.
Soilwork- Weapon Of Vanity - Pretty wicked intro + instrumentation, but I'm not sold on the vocals. They aren't awful, so they might grow on me, but not quite my thing right now.
The Contortionist- Arise - For some reason I thought this band was heavier. Not really my thing. I was too early: it does get heavier. Harsh vocals show up later.

At this point you mentioned that everything from before was 2011-2013, but the Firewind track is from 2010 I think. And Alestorm was 2014, and Cannibal was 2006? Maybe I misheard here.

Steven Wilson- The Pin Drop - Not a big prog guy. Great guitar work though, but it gets sort of out of control (is this a guitar? Might be sax?)

Great bit in between these two songs

Arsis- Unwelcome - Now this is some heavy stuff! Vocals are ok, but the music is great.
Amaranthe- Mechanical Illusion - I recently learned one of the guys from Dragonland is in this band. That is awesome. Unfortunately this band is not as awesome.
The Dillinger Escape Plan- When I Lost My Bet - I sorta zoned out and missed most of this song, but I don't like anything I've heard of this ban previously.
Alcest- Percees De Lumiere - Never listened to these guys. Seemed like some nice chill music until the vocals. Don't really like the vocals, and the music isn't entrancing enough for me to revisit.

Stopping here, but I will finish this tomorrow because I really want to hear that Dream Theater song.

Glad you made it through as much and digging as you have so far.

As for my note about the 2011-2013, I meant when I interviewed said bands. All 27 are in chronological order from when I interviewed them. Starting with Terror Syndrome (my first interview in November 2011) and ending with All That Remains (September 16th, 2014).

Episode #85, The Return of “That Drummer Guy” Josh Rundquist, Josh came back in and gave us the run down on how he overcame his year long sickness & Doctor induced addiction to pills, how his show “That Drummer Guy” suffered in that year, We also spoke about a ton of difference music, Including how his bands Beauty Of Decay and Planet Smasher are coming along, Josh is always a pleasure to have on the show so ENJOY!

About halfway through that Ritual Madness podcast, great interview so far Mr. MPF! You're story about Planet Smasher and how right when you guys are about ready to play a show someone quits is basically what Funeral Age goes through SO FUCKING MUCH. Or we will be ready to start booking MORE shows, far shows, do more, then someone will quit and gotta restart everything by teaching the new guy the songs and playing the same shows again to get them situated with everything live.

Yeah, it really fucking sucks. Basically since 2010 we've been under 4 different names, recorded 3 albums worth of music and been through so many different members to still not have one live show or any music I can release. It's stuff like that that makes you question if you are making the right choice. I am currently going through that right now (although for a different but similar reason.) It just makes me thankful that I do have another band (Beauty of Decay) that is all about playing shows and recording. The practice demos I hgave so far of the BOD music has made me prouder than anything else I have done musically.

I just hope Planet Smasher can make that happen as well.

For sure man, it really sounds like its more of a passion project than anything, at this point at least.

I'm really happy I have my 2 "internet" bands. Both signed to labels, both with material out (well, one will be released next year which I am so stoked to announce), decent following, yet we can't play shows (at least at the moment) because we are all spread so far apart. Being in a band is just rough because you really need everyone to be on the same page and you really need everyone to have the same mindset. If one guy just likes to jam and the others like sculpting good music, it wont work because "jam" guy will be bored and lose interest. If you have some dudes that just want to record and others that want to actively play shows, then that wont work since the live energy wont be there. Its like making that perfect pot of soup

That DTP song is really weird stuff. On the one hand, I think he might be a genius, but on the other he might also be insane.

Back From the Edge was really killer too. Also, not sure if it was just me, but as soon as this song ended, there were some issues with the audio stream (on Podomatic). It fixed when the next song started though.

I did find out the problem, for some reason while recording everything froze up and it corrupted my vocal file.

When recording, my show always freezes up at least once, but if anything get corrupted I always go back and re-record. Funny how this time it played right but saved wrong.

Sadly I can't fix it without rerecording the whole show and I already sent it off to everyone. Luckily it's only 24 seconds. Thanks for pointing it out thought. Hope you still dug the show.

I don't listen to any of these bands, but I've seen about half of a Ghost Brigade set before. Should be fun :rocker:

Nightingale- Forevermore - Music is pretty tame. Not a problem, but I don't dig the vocals. He's got that Jorn Lande quality of singing "too emotionally", except that Jorn does a good job of it

Digging the Warbeast mention (though really, Gammacide :rocker: )

Norrsköld- Dead End to Redeem Us - This was sick. Never heard of these guys before, but the vocals and melodies were all great.
While Heaven Wept- Icarus And I/Ardor - I got one of their albums in one of those cheap grab bag things, and listened to a couple of tracks on YouTube before I decided to sell it. This song isn't bad, but definitely nothing I'd ever listen to. Way too long IMO. Also, did anyone see the rant from a member of this band on Facebook? Seemed a bit crazy to me. No need to defend your music.
Pitch Black Forecast- Landmine (feat. M. Shadows) - Although this was (mostly) aggressive, it didn't quite do it for me.
Haken- Darkest Light - This music is really weird and trippy. Not for me.

Will do my best to get through the rest of it at some point this week.

No show this week. I took off this week for several reasons. 1.) I have a pretty bad sore throat that I have been struggling to fight off. 2.) Since last Tuesday I have had the schedule of nothing but band interviews or band practice. Tonight and tomorrow I have interviews as well and have had zero time to do anything. 3.) It's the holiday season starting this week, I think I needed a week off from the show.

Tonight I interviewed Gene Hoglan (my metal drumming hero), Obituary and Rivers Of Nihil, expect them up eventually. Tomorrow I may get an interview at the ANimals As Leaders, DTP, Monuments show, but we'll just have to see what happens.

If I'm playing a lot of fast stuff (which, you have a good grasp at what I'll be playing) He said Evans G2, Although Evans G1s or Remo Ambassadors may sound better recorded.

Evans EC2 he also said do the job, but like Pinstripes, take out too much ring and are meant for drummers who are not familiar with or not good at tuning.

John The Drummer
12-01-2014, 01:12 PM
I tried out the EC2 heads and really did not like the tone they had, defintely felt really flat, even after tuning for quite while.

I'll have to try out the Ambassadors, especially if Gene-o recommends them! I've been using Emperor's for about a year, maybe a little more, now and think they sound great. I didn't spend much time tuning them, but they sounded HUGE on the Mesmur recording :D.

I used to use Aquarian heads for years, but they just ended up feeling/sounding cheap, especially on recordings. However, the "Hi Energy" snare head is still one of the best I've ever heard!

I currently have EC2's on my kit for Beauty Of Decay and they serve their purpose in a live setting. Hell Gene had them on his kit with Death To All on Tuesday. But he says in a studio setting, they are just too muddy and take away too much tone.

That also said, i am just about to start recording this week's show. This may or may not be the last regular programming show of the year. I have a bunch of special in mind for the rest of the year. We'll see how it all plays out.

That was a great Hoglan interview! Gaw, I wish it was about 3 times longer! It was so great to just hear him talk about his drum set up, what hes up to. Was hoping for him to mention Pitch Black Forecast, but sounds like he has enough going on and can't bring up everything! He also just soudns so genuine and relaxed.... for a guy THAT busy I'd expect him to be a bit more on edge sounding

There was so much I wanted to ask about. I wanted to ask about SYL, PBF, Old Man's Child, so so so much more, but I only had 20 minutes with him before he went to bed before playing the show (honestly that's how I would do it as well given the opportunity.

When he comes back to town, and I get the chance again, I'd love to talk even more about everything he has done.

Beauty of Decay
I, Misanthrope
Live Practice Demo

This band fucking sucked. Especially the drummer  . Sounded good man! Especially for a practice demo :D

Edguy
Rock Me Amadeus (Falco cover)
Space Police - Defenders Of The Crown

I don't like Edguy, and have no history of knowing this song (I think Bloodhound Gang may have sampled it, though) so I don't really know what to say about it : (

Sinister
Fall From Grace (Morbid Angel Cover)
The Post-Apocalyptic Servant

Pretty cool cover! Nothin more to say, but spot on.

DragonForce
Ring Of Fire (Johnny Cash Cover)
Maximum Overload

 I cannot stand Dragonforce, but this was really fun!

Benighted
Old (Machine Head)
Carnivore Sublime

Funny thing, I was JUST listening to Machinehead's "Hellalive" album, and then listening to this Podcast at work and this came on and I was like "Oh man, ... WHO PLAYS THIS SONG!?" I felt like the biggest DERP when you said it was a Machinehead cover

Black Anvil
Under The Rose (KISS Cover)
Hail Death

I skipped this. Never heard the original, and wasn't feeling the intro very much.

Invidiosus
Deny the Cross (Overkill Cover)
Malignant Universe

I had no idea this was an Overkill cover, so I skipped halfway through, will have to go back and listen again :)

Suncrown
Gates Of Babylon (Rainbow Cover)
You Are Not Alone

SO FUCKING AWESOME! One of my favorite "Dio" songs, so it was great to hear such a badass cover of it!

Metal Styx
Paranoid (Black Sabbath Cover)
Curuvar Firtalion EP

OMFG WTF WAS GOING ON IN THIS!? I was so confused.

Iron Blade
Breaking The Law (Judas Priest cover)
Iron Blade

IRON BRADE PRAYING DA JUDAS PRIES!!!! Wasn't bad :)

Alfar
Runes to My Memory (Amon Amarth Cover)
Across the Northern Storms

GREAT cover! One of the few Amon Amarth songs that I actually really enjoy, so it was cool to hear a solid cover of it :rocker:

'Weird Al' Yankovic
Now That's What I Call Polka!
Mandatory Fun

There is nothing that I can say abotu this.... I could have listened to this for the full 2 hour show!!!

Fenris
Valhalla (Blind Guardian Cover)
Across the Darkened Skies

Not a fan of BG, so I skipped.

Iron Savior
Dance With Somebody (Mando Diao cover)
Rise Of The Hero

I didn't understand the humor in this since I don't know who Mando Diao is :(

Harakiri For The Sky
Mad World (Tears for Fears Cover)
Aokigahara

It as good at first, but then it lost me. Great song either way!

Witherscape
Defenders of Creation (Warrior Cover)
The New Tomorrow

Spaced out during this one.

Hortus Animae
Aqualung (Jethro Tull cover)
Secular Music

I skipped this... but ONLY because I've listened to it so much on the album, such a killer cover!

Grailknights
Holding out for a Hero (Bonnie Tyler cover)
Calling the Choir

Spaced out during this too

Massacre
Mutilation [Death Cover]
Back From Beyond

I am not the biggest Death fan, but this was a cool cover.

Paul Gilbert
Working For The Weekend (loverboy cover)
Stone Pushing Uphill Man

At first I thought "Mike Portnoy" was "Mike Patton" (I aws spacing out all day haha) so while listening I thought "Wow, I didn't know Mike Patton could drum!"

Milking the Goatmachine
When I Come Around (Green Day cover)
Greatest Hits- Covered in Milk

I thought this was Ten Masked Men at first  . I love Goatmachine, though, and all of their whacky covers and tributes to songs.

Lost Society
You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll (Twisted Sister cover)
Terror Hungry

Kinda spaced over this guy, as well.

Ten Masked Men
Bad Romance (Lady Gaga cover)
Revenge Of The Ten Masked Men

I had no idea that Ten Masked Men were still a thing! I'm going to have to look into what they've done since 2006

Sabaton
For Whom The Bell Tolls (Metallica cover)
Heroes

This was fucking awesome! :rocker: Such a solid and powerful cover! I loved it so much.

Hannes Grossmann
Euclidean Elements (Piano Version; Obscura cover)
The Radial Covenant

Skipped. Not a fan of Obscura, nor piano music :hecho:

Skid Row
Sheer Heart Attack (Queen cover)
Rise Of The Damnation Army- United World Rebellion: Chapter Two

I don't remember listening to this

Alestorm
Hangover (Taio Cruz cover)
Sunset on the Golden Age

I hate Alestorm, but was a cool song, even though I've never heard the original :D
