Hey, im new here and just getting a feel for this forum.

Please post some of the albums that you think I NEED to hear before i submit my naive opinions amongst you learned folk.

I already have a fairly substantial music collection with a good amount of metal

Well I will always claim "The End Of Heartache" by Killswitch Engage as not only my favorite album of all time (iTunes has it listed as being listened to all the way through around 19,000 times. ) but also the one album that got me into metal.

So listen to that.

I have no idea what your musical tastes are, but I certainly wouldn't call your opinion naive just because you are new to this forum. That hardly means anything, you could have simply have different taste than the majority of the people on this site (which would be interesting).

That being said, what are your musical interests?

Well it's about time you join us. ;)

This is my buddy. Most the metal I've given him is stoner/doom, prog, and the like. So just give him some suggestions and he'll listen with an open mind.

I was calling my own opinion naive as more of a joke. I like to think my taste is diverse. I'll pretty much listen to anything someone considers good so I've gotten into Jazz, prog, classical, punk, electronic and obviously metal. Some of my favorite music comes from electronic music, mainly IDM/ambient.

When it comes to metal, i really enjoy Boris, Mastodon, Weedeater, Between the Buried and Me, and Electric Wizard

I would say if you don't have the first six Black Sabbath albums Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Vol 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage you should get on top of that right away. They are the ones who started it all when it comes to heavy metal.

The first four Metallica albums and the first five albums Iron Maiden did with Bruce Dickinson The Number Of The Beast, Peice Of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son are also essential.

Considering i've been listening to metal longer than a lot of these fucks here have been alive, I believe I know what i'm talking about;)

Some of my personal all-time favorites and general recommendations, without going TOO much into specifically "my" kind of music that is probably not at all what you're looking for. Just trying to keep this in the vein of traditional/classic metal and hard rock with a few of my "all time favorites" from the Prog/Power subgenres.

Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Really, you should be familiar with all 5 of these records if you're a metal fan.

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Dio - Holy Diver
Rainbow - Rising
Thin Lizzy - Black Rose
Saxon - The Power and the Glory
Queensryche - Operation : Mindcrime, The Warning
Fates Warning - Parallels
Savatage - Streets, Edge of Thorns, Hall of the Mountain King
Anthrax - Spreading the Disease
Blind Guardian - Imaginations From the Other Side
Helloween - Keeper of the 7 Keys
Bruce Dickinson - Accident of Birth
Whitesnake - Whitesnake
Dream Theater - Images and Words
Evergrey - In Search of Truth
WASP - The Crimson Idol
Riot - Thundersteel, The Privilege of Power
Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
Kansas - Masque
King's X - Dogman

When it comes to metal, i really enjoy Boris, Mastodon, Weedeater, Between the Buried and Me, and Electric Wizard

Welcome to the site.

I was going to recommend some albums based on the bands mentioned above, but I guess I'll just recommend some albums I find flawless:

Celtic Frost - Monotheist
Church of Misery - Houses of the Unholy
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Sigh - In Somniphobia (not necessarily flawless, but worthy of a listen nevertheless)
Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt
Carcass - Heartwork
Clutch - Clutch
Coroner - Grin
Coroner - Mental Vortex
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance
Crowbar - Broken Glass
Cult of Luna - Salvation
Cynic - Traced in Air
Down - NOLA
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
Godflesh - Streetcleaner
Ihsahn - After
Intronaut - Valley of Smoke OR Prehistoricisms (can't go wrong with either)

Kylesa - Static Tensions
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve
Nachtmystium - Assassins: Black Meddle, Pt. 1
Obscura - Cosmogenesis
The Ocean - Anthropocentric
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Russian Circles - Enter

I'm guessing (and hoping) that slap has already shown you Death, so I'll leave it at that. Tried to keep the extreme metal at a minimum, too, since you don't seem to be too into that spectrum of metal.

In that case... not specific albums, if you want to expand on your doom and stoner leanings, work your way through the ones you don't already know from this lot. I strongly recommend all of them to doom fans:

Candlemass, Goatsnake, Cathedral, Krux, The Obsessed, Diesel Kings, Trippy Wicked, Count Raven, Black Oath, Pentagram, Sesta Marconi, Saint Vitus, Reverend Bizarre, Fu Manchu, Sedulus, Fireball Ministry, Orchid, Nomad Son, Forsaken, Semlah, Realmbuilder, Sahg, World Below, Wall of Sleep, Solitude Aeturnus, Orange Goblin, Firebird, Gentlemens Pistols, DoomDogs, Witchfield, Spiritual Beggars, Stubb, A Pale Horse Named Death, Seventh Void, The Gates of Slumber, Throne, Acid Witch, Atola, Leather Nun America, Heathendom, Isole, Mortalicum, Nymf, Memory Driven, Groan, Rote Mare, Old Crone, Trinakrius, The 11th Hour, The Flight of Sleipnir, Unsilence.

And if you want to try some doom rock with female vocals: Royal Thunder, The Devil's Blood, Blood Ceremony, early Serpentcult, Jex Thoth, and Reino Ermitano.

As far as I'm concerned, these are the ten metal albums everyone should hear, in chronological order:

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Slayer - South of Heaven
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Overkill - Horrorscope
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Vader - De Profundis
Down - NOLA

I know there's not even a sniff of black metal in there, but I think if you've heard those albums, you've heard the best that metal has to offer.
