Not bad. I wouldn't call it Deathcore at all, but I like this new direction.

I never thought that I cared much for Whitechapel, but I heard the song this morning and actually kinda dug it. Go figure. I heard the whole record while I was out in L.A. but I wasn't really paying attention.

It's interesting, to say the least. I'd love to hear the rest of the album.

Definitley an interesting direction, minus the spoken word sections, I dig it.

Can't listen to it on my phone, but I have pretty low expectations since their albums keep getting progressively worse.

You and I think completely the opposite, it seems. Though I'm not sure if I like New Era over Exile.

This is actually not bad at all :eyes: In any case, they do the nu-metal revival-via-chug much better than Emmure.

Glad to know I'm not alone!

Me too. I have no problem that they're doing away w/ deathcore it seems, but that just sucked. There were some cool riffs, but the song itself just wasn't heavy at all. And those Emmure-ish clean vocals, what the fuck is with that?

Why is everyone saying this is good? It just sounds like Slipknot with more breakdowns.

I didn't like the spoken-word vocals either, but the rest of the song was good imo.

I'm enjoying this one a lot more than the other track, even though this one has more of the nu-metal influence on it. I'm a bit sad though since Whitechapel has always been my favorite deathcore band and I wished they had continued progressing like they did from This Is Exile to A New Era of Corruption.

I listened to the record again earlier today. A few cool moody parts here and there so it's not just relentless from start to finish, I liked that touch.

I don't get all the love for Somatic Defilement. That album would have been damn near unlistenable if Phil Bozeman wasn't such a good vocalist.

Vocally? No way. Plus, the lyrics on Somatic are way better than This is Exile which is leagues better (lyrically and imo better overall) than New Era.

Seriously? Not that any of Whitechapel's lyrics are that great, but Somatic Defilement is just really bad horror/shock lyrics. I think Phil has gotten better by the record from a vocal standpoint (though the improved production might have something to do with that as well).

They are interesting though, even if there's no meaning. But I suppose the "I HATE THE WORLD" lyrics have their appeal as well. Vocally though, Phil's performance on The Somatic Defilement far exceeds that of the material afterward. His low gutturals on that album are just incredible. The part before the breakdown in "Devirgination Studies" is one of my favorites. He doesn't do that style much anymore, instead he usually sticks with mids and highs. Even then, his highs aren't as good as those on The Somatic Defilement. Also, the production on everything from This Is Exile onward has been very streamlined and it takes away from the power of the music. It just sounds overproduced and sterile to me. I do agree with you that the songwriting improved after The Somatic Defilement, but that was never the reason I listened to Whitechapel. I liked the monotonous generic deathcore, and I think they did it better than anybody else.

You mean awesome horror/shock lyrics? ;) That's just my preferred lyrical content, plus his vocabulary was fucking ridiculous on the first two albums and a lot of the third album seemed a bit dumbed down from a lyrical standpoint. I think he had the best range on This is Exile, as in he used a ridiculous amount of different kinds of vocals and even his simple highs and lows had different pitches (I think that's the right word, my knowledge of music terminology is pretty shitty) to them. But I still prefer his vocal performance on Somatic to anything that he's done since.

I honestly cannot get into TSD. Everything about Exile and ANEoC blows it out of the water, IMO.
