View Full Version : Baroness 'Yellow & Green' coming July 17th

Continuing along the color spectrum after 2007′s Red Album and 2009′s Blue Record, Baroness have announced Yellow & Green as the title of their new album, which will come out July 17 on Relapse.

“I demoed all the songs [last] year when I was writing them. I can say with complete confidence that the record is different. I think it’s been part of our process since day one that we buck repetition in our songwriting and in everything else—that we’re constantly giving ourselves some work to do, lest we fall back and sit on whatever laurels we’ve earned at this point.

“What we did at the very beginning was talk about what we wanted to do. It was an absolutely unanimous decision within the band to push our sound outwards a little bit. The record’s going to be really reactive—whether it’s positive or negative, [anybody who hears it is] definitely going to have a reaction to it. We tried to do different things. We tried to improve and clarify some of our songwriting.

“The result is that, on the whole, the record’s got a much broader palette of songs. There are some moments where we’re sticking to some of the foundations we’ve laid down and others where it’s a brand new type of song for us. Doing something like that is kind of a risk, especially when you’re so closely associated with a grouping of bands or style or label. That just isn’t something we care about. I feel just internally between the members of the band, we’ve taken some real risks and some risks that were absolutely worth taking for us and bore some interesting truths musically for us. It’s kind of cliché to say “expect the unexpected,” but when I listen to some of the stuff we’ve written, for my ears, it’s unexpected.”

Well that sucks, something must be up with him because he's had long hair for his whole life, then cuts it and leaves Baroness after. I can't even imagine him using the "I'm done with this" or "I want to go in a different direction" explanation.

March to the Sea
Board Up the House
Pelican and Genghis Tron covers?!? No way!

But seriously, this is going to be...very interesting, to say the least.

Oh, and I just found out they are doing a headlining show in Columbus tonight - one of three warm-up shows for their upcoming tour with Baroness. Shitballs. I have tickets to the Tribe game tonight with my son. Not that I would have made the drive for the Baroness show tonight, since I'm going to see them in a few weeks with Meshuggah, but still.

I also found out they're going to be previewing new stuff from Yellow & Green on the tour with Meshuggah, so  to that.

I missed the last time they headlined in SF in '09 and I'm still kicking myself. This will be the fourth time I'll be seeing them as a support band and every time I'm like "IT CAN'T BE OVER"

My brother was just at the show in St Louis (headlining). I would have went, but I got stuck in Springfield doing reshoots for a movie. Anyway, they got 4 or 5 new songs. Also they played an alt. version of Steel that Sleeps the Eye that has a female vocalist, and apparently it's pretty much a brand new song.

Baizley made this design which is being sold as a print:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b284/cool1337/560712_10150827865260056_8993175055_12077145_88299 91_n.jpg

I told my brother before hand if they have this design on a shirt, get one for me (He had already offered to pick me up some merch beforehand). He then texts me tonight saying that they do have this as a shirt, but he didn't have money (what was the point of offering then?). If somebody who's going to one of the upcoming tour dates wants to help me out with getting this shirt, it would be appreciated.

EDIT: Here's the new version of Steel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeDN6UWoEto)

I'm glad that they're keeping it on 2 records. I'm really really tempted to throw down forty for that deluxe version if only because John's art is amazing, but the regular double LP is like half the price... Dammit why do decisions like these have to be made!

Sweet, you were there last night. It was a hell of a show all the way around. I was going to tape Decapitated's set, but I got caught in the pit and couldn't leave until their set was done in fear of dying. I did get all of Meshuggah's set though.

I spent all of Baroness's set by the merch tables hoping I could interview Vogg From Decapitated sooner so I didn't miss Meshuggah's set. But they had a TV screen back there so i watched from there, haha.

Seriously fuck off with this comment. I agree, Change can be a good thing, but Baroness's change is a bad thing IN MY OPINION. I don't give a shit if it's heavy or not, my problem with their new stuff is that's it's about as interesting as watching fucking paint dry (Especially "Eula") The spark and creativity of their music is gone. It's seems like they were on auto-pilot writing a deliberately non-metal record and just threw these songs together with little to no effort in the songwriting department. The three songs out are one-note, lifeless and just plain fucking dull. Mastodon managed to tame their sound down while still writing making badass music, Judging from these songs Baroness did not follow suit. I will keep an open-mind on the whole album (I always do), but if the material is like the three songs it will a be a yawnfest.

Also nice attempt at a cheap shot with As I Lay Crying, real clever:tp: Sorry that I listen to all types of metal and don't write a band off because they are popular with a younger crowd. I will give As I Lay Dying my money on their new record because I find them to be a great fucking band who makes consistently great albums (It also helps that the single they just released is very good). Prior to hearing these songs, I would've have given Baroness my money as well,Like I did with Red Album and Blue Record because they are also a great band, but now they sure as shit aren't getting it unless the rest of the album is fucking incredible.

If A Different Kind of Truth by Van Halen has taught us anything, it's that the first couple of songs released in advance could tell us close to nothing about how a full record really sounds. Baroness are giving us two full lengths this time around- I'm not too crazy about these three songs either, but I'm definitely still gonna give them benefit of the doubt and count on them to release something awesome.

Like many bands before them, Baroness has apparently decided to drastically alter their sound. When a band does this, some fans dig it, others don't. Personally, I don't dig what I've heard of the new stuff so far. If others do, that's great.

Either way, it's no reason to start swearing at each other on the Interwebs.
