View Full Version : So you want to go to Warped Tour? (a 2012 preview)

Hello! Since this year's Warped Tour is one of the best lineups I've ever seen for the annual fest, I thought I'd go through and preview each band! I've never listened to a lot of these bands, so it'll be a learning experience for both of us!

Some things first:

1. This thread will not contain "real" metal. There are a few bands that some consider metal, but most of it is not. Please don't bitch like a bunch of whiny bitches about it.

2. You should know by now my preference to radio-friendly pop/punk, so don't go apeshit when I tell you I like Taking Back Sunday or something.

3. I'll be going in alphabetical order.

4. Most of the bands are playing every date, I'll be sure to say when they aren't.

Okay, next post is the beginning!

A Loss For Words

Genre: Pop/Punk, Melodic Hardcore

Top 3 tracks on their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/A+Loss+For+Words)

1. Stamp of Approval (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8BLJ8HkMRQ)
2. Honeymoon Eyes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOnPpdEmrfc)
3. Hold Your Breath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrJFwZ_eDCc)

My thoughts:

That first song, Stamp of Approval, is awesome! It's got a really catchy punk vibe, but the other ones kind of sound more like they're moving to the melodic hardcore side. It's not terrible, just a little generic. I'm sure they'd be fun at Warped, but it could be better.

A Loss For Words are from here. They came out and played a song on Polar Bear Club's equipment at Glamour Kills Tour a few weeks ago and I was pretty impressed. I've been meaning to check out their stuff further, but i haven't got the chance to yet.

After The Burial

Genres: Progressive Metalcore/Deathcore

Top 3 tracks on their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/After+the+Burial)

1. Berzerker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWEA8XFtDK4)
2. Your Troubles Will Cease and Fortune Will Smile Upon You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJQlES3ILT0)
3. Cursing Akhenaten (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzpKsjjehdc)

Most of you probably know of this band already. The first song is really 85% an awesome song, the only bad part being the painfully boring breakdown at the end. It's just brainless fun tech-y metalcore. The 2nd song is apparently from their new album, so it's kind of sad they just turned into another boring djent band. Third song is okay, but nowhere as good as the first one. I might try and catch Berzerker from them on Warped.

All Time Low

Genres: Powerpop, Pop Rock

Top 3 tracks on their LLast.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/All+Time+Low)

1. Dear Maria, Count Me In (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcNiKCmWdYE)
2. Remembering Sunday (http://youtu.be/ccKV1X9uyP4)
3. Weightless (http://youtu.be/TpG3BxRctQ4)

I actually think this band killed whatever momentum radio pop/punk had in the early 00's (blink-182, Green Day, etc.) because they just focused on looking and sounding pretty and pretty much just turning into a "hard pop" band. The second and third songs give me a toothache from how bubblegummy they sound. The first song isn't too bad, but I know they're pretty much a lost cause.

Fun fact: I had to go to the 8th page of their pictures on their Last.FM to find a photo of them with their instruments. I passed AT LEAST 9 photos of them posing in their underwear. Fuck.

Amyst

Genres: Crabcore, Post-Hardcore w/ Electronica

Top tracks on their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Amyst?ac=amyst)

1. Let's Do Things We Won't Do In Real Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtOPeTrdZE)
2. We'll Play With Fire Ants Until The Water Floods The Mound (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_KbJCuKujU)
3. Rolling In The Deep Cover (Adele) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp2K0Sl-AwI)

Well...it's bands like these that aren't just ruining tours like Warped Tour, but they are ruining "heavy" music everywhere. Boring crabcore, honestly a cheap imitation of every shitty crabcore band before them. Boring. Dumb. Stupid. Get out. At least they aren't coming here.

Anthony Raneri

Genres: Acoustic, Pop Rock, Singer-Songwriter

Top tracks according to his Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Anthony+Raneri)

1. Sandra Partial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtfNYbZ8mEo)
2. Charleston (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONxsOzsj9gY)
3. The Ballad Of Bill The Saint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9VAGgubq_s)

Apparently this guy is the singer for Bayside, but his solo stuff is really catchy! Some of the songs, like Sandra Partial, have a country vibe to it, but it's really fun to listen to. I'm really surprised, I'm really liking this stuff! Reminds me a lot of a band like maybe Cake or Ben Folds? I'll check him out for sure.

Genres: Punk Rock

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Anti-Flag)

1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5Wxn37Tt1Y

3. This Is The End (For You My Friend) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnVD7WuarSo&ob=av2n)

Have heard so much about this band but have never listened to them before. Based on these three songs, they seem like a more melodic version of The Casualties to me. Pretty nice, if not standard, melodic punk. Super political. I bet they'd be fun.

Genre: Surf Rock, Reggae

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Ballyhoo!)

3. Somewhere Tropical (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jSac4QMcjY)

The 2nd and 3rd songs just sound like a "chill" version of 311 or Sublime. And if you know me, you know how much I hate that fucking adjective. But the first song seems kinda fun. Maybe in the blistering parking lot heat of Warped Tour, they might be okay to watch for a few songs.

Okay, here's the thing. I've heard the "Blackout" song EVERYWHERE, but never knew who sang it. It's actually a pretty good David Guetta-esque take on pop music. But everything else Breathe Carolina has released since that is only a slightly more tolerable version of Brokencyde. When I saw them at Warped 2009, they were the worst thing I saw that day, because they just basically wanted to be Cobra Starship with screaming vocals. I won't check them out this year and I really have no interest of checking them out further, but hopefully they stay on the path that they're on now.

Champagne Champagne - I'm not too big on hip-hop, but I dug these guys a lot. Mostly from being subjected to whole songs by the former two bands and these guys sounded amazing in comparison.

Chelsea Grin - I like their first EP and album, but after that it's like they're not even trying.

Cherri Bomb - Holy fuck, I loved this! Kinda reminds me of Care Bears on Fire.

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! - I'd heard the Kesha cover before (Seriously, how the fuck can you butcher a Kesha song?!) and hearing another song reaffirmed my initial opinion of this band. My main complaint out of many is that their vocalist is just terrible at both kinds of vocals and needs to just stop it.

Danielle Barbe - Actually pretty good, but not really my style. It felt a little to girly.

You have already made me feel better about everything that's on my iPod. Thank you. /snarky comment

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! might be the worst band name I've ever heard.

This, and if they sound anything like ADTR then a 3/10 is too high of a score.

My biggest beef with Chunk is that the french accents really get to me, the cleans are a tad too whiny, and the screams are too growly. I'd rather listen to something like City Lights or For The Win.

Dead Sara

Genre: Rock, Hard Rock

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Dead+Sara)

1. Weatherman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLGoeYOZ0Qs)
2. Sorry For It All (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ5uaoc6Iss)
3. Test On My Patience (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs9tVJsJ3IQ)

So pretty much a not-as-good version of Cherri Bomb. They've gotten some moderate airplay here on the alternative station, and the Weatherman song really kicks. Good stuff!

3. I'm Not A Vampire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODhMdujZeEY)

I'll admit that even though Escape The Fate was (still is) a really bad band, they at least had a few catchy songs. But when the singer left and started Falling In Reverse, it was painfully obvious that the few things that made Escape The Fate a fun/listenable band were the other band members. Falling In Reverse is just a nowadays Papa Roach and Panic at the Disco worship. Not good, and the vocalist has a terrible voice.

I Am The Avalanche

Genre: Pop Punk, Melodic Hardcore

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/I+Am+The+Avalanche?ac=i+am+the+avalanc):

1. Brooklyn Dodgers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-XC8jcqIEY)
2. Holy Fuck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PiOoAGFd_s)
3. Amsterdam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1yqp0eVFqI)

Good stuff, although there are tons of bands playing this style of music who do it better. But their slightly more harsh take on pop-punk is definitely fun.

Rating: 7/10

Hyro Da Hero

Genre: Hip-Hop, Rock, Punk
At his best, Hyro Da Hero sounds like a slightly more hip-hop oriented version of Rage Against The Machine. Which is awesome! Even his more straight-up hip-hop tracks are full of rage and great beats, but the punk/rock stuff is where it's at. He'll be great.

Oh, and his backing band contains members of At The Drive-In, Idiot Pilot and Blood Brothers.

Rating: 8/10

Dates playing: Up until July 22nd[/CENTER]

I like this. You can definitely hear the Blood Brothers' sound in the instrumentation. I'm adding this to the list of bands to see.

Random but my cousin called me today and told me out of the blue that there is a 99.9% chance that he has a backstage pass with me this year and that he'll take me to watch The Ghost Inside and Every Time I Die from the side and also he said he's pretty positive he can get me a interview with TGI since he use to play with their manager. Also he said he'll introduce me to guys in ETID since he's friends with all of them since he toured with them and Normal Jean in 2002.

Yea I'm hoping he can get the pass. Watching and meeting all the bands from the side of the stage would rock as would a interview with TGI.

Last year at Warped though during Winds Of Plague they had everyone pick up whatever they could (mainly trash) and on the count of three throw it in the air. It was insane to see.

Their brand of pop punk has more in common with the likes of All Time Low, so it's a bit bubblegummy, but it's still not terrible. I probably wouldn't watch these guys, but it's a good alternative to most other powerpop bands.

3. Heads Up, Hearts Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ6vRE4lVNw)

I know people who absolutely hate this band, but I really, really love them. They play a great combination of catchy rock with a heavy chiptune/8-bit influence. When I saw them open for mc chris, most of the songs had modified videogame controller instruments, including a DDR mat! It was really cool and I'm super stoked to see them again. Think if Jonathan Coulton rocked a bit harder.

Here's some of their covers I really like:

Why Bother (Weezer) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrdUD5JV_rM)
The Future Soon (Jonathan Coulton) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilX0kjhQ7jA&feature=related)

I actually agree with Manks:eek: ;) Impending Doom is one of the absolute worst bands in all of metal. Beyond generic deathcore with god-awful pig squeals. The fact that they throw their Christianity in everyone's face is also really annoying. I would say the only deathcore bands that are worse than them are Chelsea Grin and Emmure (even though they aren't really deathcore anymore).

I Fight Dragons sucks balls too though imo.

It's kind of weird, the best example of a Christian band on a "metal" show and the worst example have come from the same band.

First time I saw Impending Doom, they just went right through their set and at the very end, the singer just said "We know a lot of you don't agree with out faith, but we just want to thank you from the bottom of our heart's for coming to check us out."

Then the second time I saw them, he was chiding all the people in the audience flipping them off and stuff, being like "It'S OKAY TO HATE US, JESUS LOVES YOU!!!"

Memphis May Fire kinda reminds me of the best parts of Bring Me The Horizon's last album mixed with the worst of Attack Attack! Really? Their older stuff is 1000 times better than their newer stuff. New cd by them sucked.

I actually am considering picking up their new CD. Old stuff sounds like boring deathcore, new stuff sounds really nice.

So this band is basically Unearth. Especially their newer stuff. It's actually not terrible at all. Don't you love it how deathcore bands are branching out and leaving behind that disgusting genre? But yeah, I may not be so much into them live, but on record they are definitely a solid pick for when you just want some dumb, generic, but still fun melodic metalcore.

Motionless In White

Genre: Crabcore, Deathcore

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Motionless+In+White?ac=motion"):

1. Abigail (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-uJK1vClhM)
2. Immaculate Misconception (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vov0yT7qnVI)
3. Creatures (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE6qHoNthxU)

If Suicide Silence worshipped Attack Attack, you'd have Motionless In White. Nothing redeeming or unique about this band whatsoever. They are only popular because they're trying to bring back the "goffic" look again, I guess? Shit.

I think Every Time I Die are the only metal act at Warped I like. Which is fine by me really because I'm going to Death To All the day before so the fewer pits at Warped the better.

As of now, my list of bands to see is: Every Time I Die :rocker:, Hyro Da Hero, Funeral Party, Transit, Streetlight Manifesto, Polar Bear Club, Bayside, Pierce the Veil(because nostalgia), and maybe I Fight Dragons and Anti Flag, if none of the above are playing during their set.

Maybe we can add a few more to the list if Manks finishes by Friday. ;)

New Found Glory

BAND I AM MOST EXCITED TO SEE AT WARPED TOUR HOLY SHIT

Genre: Pop Punk, Melodic Hardcore

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/New+Found+Glory?ac=new+found+glory)

1. My Friends Over You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfcLcDBII78)
2. All Downhill From Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK5Sdj08Lco)
3. Understatement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ynsvBbeBrU)

The Godfathers of all current pop punk/melodic hardcore bands. Pay your respects. They are the perfect combination of the two genres and are one of my favorite bands of all time. Go out and buy all their albums right now. Their newest one might be my favorite of theirs.

Of Mice & Men

Genre: Crabcore

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Of+Mice+&+Men?ac=of+mice)

1. Second & Sebring (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHrC4uji944)
2. OG Loko (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T8Q5Ef2Ql4)
3. Purified (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f9lK3_dEG4)

Of Mice & Men was formed from one of the members of Attack Attack, so it's only fitting that they'd be a carbon copy of the band who created the sound. They might be a bit more "post" than AA!, but you wouldn't be able to tell the two apart after a while. So bad.

Pierce The Veil

Genre: "Post-Hardcore", "emocore", "progressive" those genres

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Pierce+The+Veil?ac=pierce+the+veil)

1. Caraphernelia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZVYOriINwc)
2. Just The Way You Are (Bruno Mars cover) Yep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jszFKG9zVs4)
3. Bulletproof Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIC4lvlOzQo)

This band is kind of strange. It's a bit hard for me to exactly pinpoint their genre down. It's definitely progressive, but progressive within the confines of those genres I listed. Like, what junior high kids back in 2002 called "post-hardcore" is what Pierce the Veil is. It's not...bad. The vocalist is insanely annoying, but it's interesting.

Polar Bear Club

MANKY'S SEAL OF APPROVAL

Genre: Melodic Hardcore, Punk, Post-Hardcore

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Polar+Bear+Club)

1. Pawner/Killin It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YEhct_UzyU)
2. Screams In Caves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kysaAkYmkjM)
3. Living Saints (http://youtu.be/BbMmU4LA3cs)

PBC reminds me a lot of a band like Rise Against, or even a harder version of Saves The Day. I can't think of many bands in this kind of music that do slower songs as well as faster-paced ones as well as Polar Bear Club. I also think their vocalist has a unique sounds and can actually sing pretty well. They'll get under your skin, in a good way, and you'll want to check 'em out after just one song. :D

Top tracks according to their Last.FM (http://www.last.fm/music/Miss+May+I?ac=miss+may+i):

1. Hey Mister (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvUKsVGm6Xw)
2. Tides (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT6F84MuEG4)
3. Opening Wounds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCPwaCwf_l4)

Surprised you like them. I think they are decent as well and their new album is comparable with the rest of the material in their discography. The Unearth comparison though:nonono:

You saying Unearth is better, or that they don't sound like Unearth? 'Cause I can totally see the Unearth comparison.

Agree on NFG, so godly. I always liked Blink more, but whateva.

Both actually. I can't even see the correlation between Unearth and Miss May I and Unearth is a much, much better band.

Definitely this.

It's like two different styles of metalcore.

If NFG played all of Sticks and Stones, Warped Tour admission would be worth it just for that. Them and Title Fight are the bands I'm most looking forward too seeing as how I haven't seen em. The "metal" bands this year pale in comparison to last year, August Burn Red and Devil Wears Prada

Haha. I actually saw Enter Shikari instead of TDWP at Warped last year. They were so damn good and put on a hell of a show.

Rise Against
Rise To Remain
Senses Fail
Streetlight Manifestro
Taking Back Sunday (Manky seal of approval)
The Used
Title Fight
Transit
We Are The In Crowd
Yellowcard

Here (http://vanswarpedtour.com/bands) are all the bands, if you wanna do some of your own research.
