American video, American consciousness gets hit first. You do the math.

The point is, how are we only hearing about this now and why does it take some worthless piece of shit like Facebook to make people notice?

It also amuses me that they chose famous people based on America's recognition of them to decide who to target. Ryan Seacrest? Seriously, no one outside of American knows, who gives a shit, who he is.

I was actually glad this wasn't discussed here till now. To be fair though my news feed is pretty bereft of those videos and most of the people seem to see through the "campaign".

The fact that this movement and the people supporting it, people trying to make a difference for the good of others, are being scoffed at it is pretty shameful to me. Unamerican and shameful.

Kony is a scumbag who deserves to die a slow and painful death but honestly, the whole movement is annoying the shit out of me. Something about all the support for this cause just seems so artificial to me. Kids in my school are flipping a shit trying to get the action pack. I hear typical douchebags in my classes who never gave a shit about Africa until 3 days ago going "I'M SO FUCKING PISSED THEY SOLD OUT OF ACTION PACKS!" I feel like they're only trying to acquire these materials to show off. Reminds of the whole Livestrong bracelet fad that was originally about donating to cancer research but just turned into a fashion statement.

Sorry, I thought it was a global thing.

You guys didn't see that Video of that girl from Uganda saying how nothing's going over there and that Kony Montana died in 06?

Interesting.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/dad-son-talk-celebrity-tweets-teens-key-to-viral-video-denouncing-africa-atrocities/2012/03/08/gIQAFry2zR_story_1.html

I've actually not been among the ones overtly bothered by the people who care or at least show that they care about this campaign because frankly I feel quite indifferent about this going viral now. These issues have been prevalent in Uganda and other African countries since the early 80s and even if awareness is created now, it is too little too late I'm afraid.

There's good reason for that. You should actually look into the organization behind it.

I don't think they were expecting this video to go as viral as it did though. They've released multiple films and none of them have received this sort of attention. It's already over 58 million views on YouTube. Kind of insane. And the whole video is geared toward influencing American politicians, not those around the world. Not to mention they are based here, so it's harder to have an influence overseas.

I know plenty about Invisible Children. The only thing anyone could possibly have against them is how they use their funding, which is perfectly reasonable as it is. It needs to spend money on the people who work for it and getting more support/exposure along with helping the cause. Unless I'm missing something is everybody bitching at them for self sustenance? What kind of shit is that?

It's all about Kony this month, but next it's going to back to random videos of cats being cats. Everyone who supports this Kony 2012 business does it with a good heart, but in the end they will just forget that they were so involved and how much/often they spewed out thoughts/comments/photos about it.

I agree the fact that Kony is now such a big deal is sad, and the fact that the supports of this movement are putting all their eggs in this one basket and neglecting the rest of the world where this stuff happens on a smaller scale.

I will just leave this here in hopes it can get a laugh:

I just think it's funny that everybody woke up one day and all of a sudden realized bad shit happens in the world.

I really hate American culture sometimes. Nobody gives a shit about human rights atrocities a week ago but now everyone acts like they care because it's "cool." Don't get me wrong, I think it's good that people at least understand that these sort of issues are happening now (to an extent), but I just hate that even when our society "cares" we come off as self absorbed.

Also, if people really want to donate money to the cause they shouldn't be wasting it on Invisible Children, who admittedly spend most of their money on advocacy campaigns such as this Kony video and not on direct aid.

That reminds me of the Christian club at my school. They give everybody free tacos as well. Except they're from Del Taco, not Taco Bell.

The Daily Show's treatment of this was amusing. Particularly the clip of the director explaining who Kony is to his 4 year old kid.
