Official press release:

World renowned hard rock band High On Fire will release its new studio album De Vermis Mysteriis on April 3 via eOne Music. Recorded in Salem, Massachusetts' GodCity studios with producer and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, the 10 song effort -- touted as "direct, eye-opening and powerfully supernatural" -- is the band's sixth studio recording and the follow up to 2010's Snakes for the Divine which debuted at #62 on the Billboard Top 200 and has been called "wonderful" by The New York Times and "an exhilarating rush" by The Chicago Tribune.

De Vermis Mysteriis (or "Mysteries of the Worm") takes its title from a fictional grimoire created by Psycho author Robert Bloch and incorporated by H. P. Lovecraft into the lore of the Cthulhu Mythos (Lovecraft mentioned De Vermis Mysteriis as one of the books that "repeat the most hellish secrets learnt by early man"). The album carries a deeply mystical undercurrent, incorporating fantastical themes and lyrics detailing, among other things, time travel, a serum called liao that is made out of a black lotus and "a Jesus twin who can see the past through his ancestors' eyes." And that's just scratching the surface!

Musically, De Vermis Mysteriis is absolutely explosive, showcasing the California power trio's thundering roar and expanded harmonic and rhythmic palettes while the songs move confidently through multiple riffs and movements. High On Fire construct tough, burly stoner metal that is at once devastatingly epic and mercilessly metallic as superstar guitarist Matt Pike's sizzling ax and avenging-angel riffs fuse with Des Kensel's double-kick-drum onslaught and Jeff Matz's concrete crushing, Burton-esque bass guitar. Over the course of forty-five minutes, High On Fire have created an amalgamation of fantastical lyrical ideas and brute force musicianship anchored in an endlessly captivating, punkishly frantic sound. Simply put, the band generates awesome on demand and has a virtual chokehold on monolithic-sounding, masterfully crafted epic music. High On Fire is a savage bull in the china shop of modern metal.

When asked for comment on De Vermis Mysteriis, Pike somewhat cryptically replied, "Prepare for your dark journey."

The track listing for High On Fire's De Vermis Mysteriis is as follows:

01. Serums of Liao
02. Bloody Knuckles
03. Fertile Green
04. Madness of an Architect
05. Interlude
06. Spiritual Rites
07. King of Days
08. De Vermis Mysteriis
09. Romulus and Remus
10. Warhorn

The last album was two years ago. It's time. I hate it when bands take 6 years to release an album. It took Slayer 7 years to release 5 classic albums. If you can't work like that, put your instruments down and fade into obscurity.

Eh. Every one of their previous albums is like this insanely beautiful painting of these crazy characters, and then all of a sudden we just have this (mostly) black and white guy shooting laser beams out of his eyes.

But like I said, HoF is in my top 10 bands, I'm going to LOVE this album.

Its the best thing they've done since 2005 man. You're going to flip out when you hear its awesomeness. Touring with Sleep and working with Kurt really revitalized Matt and HoF. ;)

Its also possibly some of the heaviest stuff they've recorded. Spiritual Rites and The title track absolutely destroy.

Songwriting is pretty stale but Kurt Ballou is such an amazing producer that he almost makes up for it.One hundred actual fucking dollars says I don't end up agreeing with this statement - but we'll see.

One reason I'm inclined to disagree is that the songwriting is actually one of the things that had vastly improved in my opinion during the transition from "Death" to "Snakes" (not that songwriting has ever been a problem for this band, I just noticed that it seems to have improved).

This album (unsurpisingly) kills from start to finish (with the exception of King of Days which I'm not too crazy about). My faves as of right now are Fertile Green, Madness of an Architect, Romulus and Remus, and Spiritual Rites. After this intial listen, I'd say it's better than Snake for the Divine, on par with Death is This Communion, and not as good as Blessed Black Wings.

Finally got a chance to hear this tonight, this album SMOKES. Madness of an Architect is my favorite, I wasn't crazy about it when that live clip came out, seemed like standard doom metal, but the recording is awesome, so damned heavy, and the instrumental that comes after is killer.

One hundred actual fucking dollars says I don't end up agreeing with this statement - but we'll see.Well, amazingly, I have to admit that you almost have a point here. Almost. I mean, there are no real breakthroughs on this album, that's true. There are also a whole host of things that sound awesome, but have been done before - and by this very band.

That said, I wouldn't use the word "stale". I might be willing to stipulate that there are no real game-changers on this album, but there is some experimentation with song openings and closings and the like, and as you said, the excellent production really saves the day.

However, it's still a damned good album, and for that reason alone, I wouldn't be watching your mailbox for a check from The Nat if I were you, because it's not gonna happen.

Well that sums it up... they're Motorhead for our generation so it wouldn't surprise me if they do another 5-10 albums without really changing anything.

I get the Orion reference and agree with the assessment, but I don't mind the song too much. It's OK.

By the way, if you think about it, saying a song sounds like "Orion" isn't really an insult at all, is it? ;)

EDIT: Also, "Fertile Green" fucking rocks. :rocker: That is all.

It is if you are a half-firm subscriber to Ultraboris's Master of Puppets essay.

By the same token, High On Fire aren't a thrash band, so they have more "authority" to do that, but the fact is the song is still kind of meandering and boring.
