Slayer, Motorhead, Anthrax

You named 1 good band. And they're the only good band on the fest.

I know it seems pretty much established that it'll just be a Sumerian band, but I have a feeling Dirge Within might get added(theyve been removed from all ads for the Shockwave tour and no longer have those dates on their site) they did do dates of Mayhem in the past before getting signed

EDIT: nevermind, Upon A Burning Body has been confirmed to rotate between Jager and Sumerian, but that just raises questions

From what I heard, they are not replacing High on Fire per-say considering they were confirmed to play before High On Fire dropped off the tour. I've heard that The Sword, Dirge Within, Overkill and Chimaira are possible contenders.

Id say Dirge Within out of those because it would definitely explain them dropping off Shockwave(as this is a MUCH bigger tour)

I don't need a source, it's common sense. Mayhem said they were booking a replacement. A few days later they announce BTM. The fact that BTM jumped the gun and announced themselves beforehand is irrelevant.

Betraying the Martyrs is the replacement and no they have not announced who is opening the main stage. Given you live in Cali and you're one of the first dates, if not the first date, I assume you're probably getting As I Lay Dying on main stage.

Unrelated side note: Metal Blade is the shit, so don't blame them for Bolt Thrower not coming to the US. Blame Bolt Thrower for being douches that hate America.

It just scares me knowing that they are going to have to cut out a huge chunck of what they've been playing on their recent tour. I'm really praying that they keep Spirit in Black, Die By the Sword, Postmortem, Chemical warfare, jesus saves, and altar of sacrifice for the upcoming mayhem fest show. Or they could just use common sense and take out all the shitty World Painted Blood songs and Dead Skin mask and just keep everything else and I will be happy as cherry pie.

So aside from having the same fucking Jager band for a FIFTH year(they weren't that good in 2008 yet back again in '09, '10, '11, and now '12) I'm happy. I can take my sweet time after Anthrax because Asking Alexandria is on main and try and get a decent spot for As I Lay Dying and Anthrax at the Jager stage because I really don't need to see I The Breather.

They did psychopath red at mayhem fest in 2009 way before World Painted blood came out so i bet they will play a song off the new EP at mayhem fest. And is gary hold involved in the new EP since it says Gary and kerry promoting THEIR new slayer ep, and I haven't really heard from jeff, i don't even think he's' really involved in the new slayer record, sounds like he's still in rehab with his fucked up arm.

Ahahahahahaha. Very true. But I still find it odd that Slipknot, being the main headlining band, is playing shorter than Slayer. Someone on the Mayhem Fest boards said that Slipknot is actually playing for an hour and ten minutes. I don't know if this is true or not.

Filling in sonically from backstage for the missing musicians were Donnie Steele on bass, and on guitars Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso from As I Lay Dying. "Even though it was very, very hard for us," Taylor told the crowd, "we decided we would come out here and give you every fucking ounce of energy we’ve got."

Apparently John Reese uses the survey to book mid level acts on the festival. He stated Unearth would not have been booked the last time they played if not for support via this survey. I wrote in my preferrences of Down, Ghost, Danzig (could play in Anthrax's slot), Arch Enemy & Skeletonwitch.

Mayhem Fest 2012 has barely started so lets save discussion for 2013 until at least Thanksgiving. Just thought I would pass that along.

As much as he may miss home, if we wants to feed his family and put his kids through college, he's gonna keep touring whether he likes it or not. From what I understand, Metallica are pretty much the only full-time metal musicians that could retire and do nothing for the rest of their lives. Everyone else either has day jobs that help pay the bills when they're not on tour (Testament, Heathen etc) or tour constantly so that they can be full-time musicians (Slayer, Exodus etc).

tl;dr Slayer aren't gonna stop touring anytime soon.

You're kidding yourself if you think the guys in Slaye aren't financially secure at this point. Since RIB they have been one of the most consistanly successful and in demand metal bands in the world. While their albums don't sell what they used to, they still sell very respectable. Between Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, Slayer is the band that has maintained the bulk of their fanbase through the years. The reason they keep touring is because the demand is always there from fans to see them. Also, when you've been doing that for 30 years, you know nothing else except to go tour because that's how you make your money. Just look at all the big tours they've been on the last few years. They're co-headlining mayhem for the second time and they've had tours with Megadeth and Rob Zombie and let's not forget about the big four stuff either. It doesn't seem to me the band is having much of a cash flow problem unless the individual members are just bad with money and don't know how to manage it. Otherwise, it appears to me that the band is doing just fine financially. They haven't had too many down periods either and they've always been good at keeping their name out there.

The other bands I could see having day jobs though. Testament had a long layoff between The Gathering and The Formation Of Damnation, so it's not surprising the members would have something else. Heathen is no shocker either since they haven't been on the metal radar in well, ever.

Testament definitely have a bit of a problem with gaps between albums these days. I seen an interview with Chuck Billy who stated their promoter wouldn't book them on a new tour until a new album was definitely coming out, and that was last year so it still took them a little while. Slayer have never really been in that boat. I'd love them to bring back the Unholy Alliance tour before they laid it all to rest.

Truth. Interview from '08

http://www.cravemagazine.com/Evo-Content_-_pa_-_showpage_-_pid_-_1105.html

Crave: It's kind of an interesting thought to me that one of the pioneers of thrash metal has a day job. What do you do for a living?
CB: I do safety for a trucking company. I travel around 11 states and give safety lectures.

Crave: Does anyone ever recognize you from Testament?
CB: Yeah, I got 400 drivers that drive for me and a lot of them are metal fans. They always call me when we come on the radio. I started probably ten years ago when my wife got into a bad car wreck. A buddy of mine since I was five years old, his parents owned a trucking company and they haul US Mail. We always used to practice at this trucking company. He understands the music business and understands what I do so he lets me go on tour and do records. When I got cancer a few years ago, I had a great health plan. If I didn't have it I would probably have lost my house and everything I own. So at this point, it's basically keeping health insurance for my family, but I actually enjoy the routine of getting up and doing my thing every day. Not to mention, he pays me very well, so I do alright every year doing music and working for a living.

I guess I'm just being needlessly skeptic. I know that the guys in Slayer are probably pretty well off financially, hell they're probably one of the most merchandised metal bands around. I'm not saying they have a cash flow problem either, what I am saying though is that unless they were really smart with their money and have a ton saved, they probably can't retire at their age. Again, in Tom's case he has a family, which means he's got expenses all over the place. If I remember right, you've got a few years on me so you'd certainly know this better than I would, but from what I understand, having a really good cash flow for 25 years doesn't mean you can just stop working and retire at age 50 and have a comfortable lifestyle for yourself and your family for the rest of your life. My whole point is that as long as the Slayer dudes have reasonably high expenses that require them to keep earning money (families being the obvious one), then I don't think we have to worry about them ending their touring. I mean, Randy Blythe apparently earns under 200k a year and LoG is one of the most successful modern metal bands around. What he probably earns is still really really high by most standards, but he probably isn't a multimillionaire or anything crazy.

Then again, what do I know, I'm just a 19 year old college student. I could very well be full of shit. (And if I am, you're more than welcome to point it out haha) :D

200k is more than your ave person man, I'm gonna say roughly 150k more. And if you make that a year for a couple of years or for your career and aren't set in life to retire at age 50 then I don't know what to tell ya.

I'm positive Slayer will at least do a farewell tour prior to retiring though. Just saying get your Slayer fix while you can. Plus its Mayhem fest, it's always fun.

http://www.gigwise.com/news/4652/Dimebag-Darrells-Estate-To-Be-Divided-Amongst-His-Family

Dimebag Darrell's estate was worth $700,000 when he passed. Pantera sold around 15 million albums worldwide not to mention their DVDs, merch, etc.

Slayer has sold around 10 million albums worldwide. Their DVD sales are ok & there merch sales are good for a band of their stature.

$700,000.00 is alot of $. However, I don't see a person who spends $ like a rockstar or has bills like they probably have being able to retire at age 50 and live comfortably for the next 20 years. It's good $ but that is 20 years worth of taxes, bills, upkeep on houses/vehicles, health insurance combined with there band not touring, royalities shrinking, merch not selling as well due to the band being out of the public eye, etc.

And I don't believe any one member of Slayer has made as much $ as Dime did. Those guys could retire at age 60 on that if they lived to be 75. Not at age 50 though.

pantera is probably not the best example to use to gauge another comparable bands worth. they obviously blew ridiculous amounts of money on partying and destroying things. also factor in damageplan was surely a large step down in the money they were bringing in, but probably were blowing money as if they were still pantera.

granted i dont know much about their lifestyles, but slayer strike me as pretty tame and unextravagant in comparison. not to mention they have been at it far longer and have been relatively big the majority of that time. if there is one underground metal band that is financially set for quite some time its probably them.

Tom I agree with you BUT they are talking retirement. Serious retirement. I don't think they can make it... especially if they live to their eighties. No telling what the costs of everyday necessities like gas, food, bills would cost 10 years from now let alone 30... not to mention most musicians retirements used to be funded by royalty checks. Illegal downloading has destroyed that. Once they are retired the cash flow more or less stops unless there is a reunion or new project.

I remember reading Damageplan's tour rider (from the "Vulgar Display of Power" book on Dime's murder) a while back. If I had the book on me at the moment, I'd read from it, but essentially, it was Pantera's rider (a metric fuckton of booze) scaled down to club size.

...Then again, they did co-headline the Headbangers Ball tour with Hatebreed, so they could have made some money off of that.

God damn. Now I'm wondering how these people managed their money.

Houston is going to be fucked up, none of us really know how that's going to work. We take it one day at a time. We rolled in today and they have us (vendors) all tucked into weird places, so that's what we pay attention to. The only thing we are planning in advance is our beach off-day in Panama City.

Finishing setting up in Denver now, watching Wimbledon to take a break. The weather has been insane the last few days - scorching hot in Phoenix, then crazy storms and wind yesterday in Albuquerque, then it's dark and a bit of a chill in the air in Denver today. I passed out on the bus air-guitaring to "Painkiller" last night. TOUR HARD

Shirts
Pantera: 5pts
Damageplan: 10pts
Hellyeah: -5pts

Patches (preferably backpatch)
Pantera: 5pts
Damageplan or Hellyeah: 10pts

Misc
Red dyed beard: 20pts
Drunk asshole yelling Pantera: 15pts
Band dedicating a song to Dime: 20pts
Band randomly playing "Walk" in between songs: 25pts
Crowd bursting into a "DIMEBAG!" chant: 50pts

:party::party::party:

Played this in Dallas at the Mayhem Festival.

I counted 23 Pantera shirts, one Damageplan shirt, and one Hellyeah shirt, one Pantera patch, one red beard, and a drunk asshole yelling "Pantera". The Ice Box (VIP lounge) had a Blacktooth Grin on the menu too, if that counts.

...They also had a Dimebag tent. Nothing but memorial shirts, pick tins, Dimebag stencils, Dimebag postcards...if you could put Dime's name on it, it was there. Bonus points go out to the raffle to win a Dean Razorback.

Oh! And one guitar pick jewelry store didn't have Pantera picks with them (plenty of Johnny Cash and AC/DC), and someone flipped shit.

Just got back from Mayhem in Tampa. A few notes:

- I know much of this has been confirmed, but buying Antennas to Hell for $20 gets you a meet and greet with members of Slipknot. Here, it was Chris, Clown, and Corey. Corey was the friendliest, believe it or not. He shook my hand and many others. Did different members do the signing at other stops? Also, Sid had his own signing, but I missed it. The band only signs posters, nothing else. Not even the CD you just bought. :finger2: Also, I was under the impression, Antennas to Hell was a three-disc set, but they only had the two-disc one there, and the three-disc one you can only buy as part of a $100 pre-order package online.
- Kerry King, Asking Alexandria, and As I Lay Dying all canceled their signings. Kerry King's reason was bad weather, even though it only rained lightly, and already stopped 45 minutes before the signing was supposed to start. Motorhead didn't do a signing either, but I know they aren't at most stops.
- As I Lay Dying didn't play Anodyne Sea or Cauterized, but closed with The Sound of Truth. Considering An Ocean Between Us is my favorite album of theirs, I wasn't complaining. setlist.fm has the wrong setlist posted.
- Slipknot didn't play Pulse of the Maggots, which was a huge bummer for me. setlist.fm is wrong for this one too.
- Charlie Benante wasn't back with Anthrax, but Jim Root was back with Slipknot tonight.
- Also said hi to Chris_M_S, although I'm not you caught my name from this site haha.

Storms did some damage to the ampitheatre three days before, but thankfully the show went on as planned. It was an awesome day!

A few songs into Motorhead's set (oh, yeah, Motorhead was on, but no one was paying attention), drunk guy's friend walks up to an obese guy in a Misfits jacket who is standing with CC shirt guy, jumps him, and starts beating the living hell out of him. Total cheap shot. Misfits guy wasn't even talking to drunk guy's friends. Drunk guy's friends were acting like they achieved something, and CC shirt guy and Misfits jacket simply walked to a different part of the lawn.

Somewhere in the middle, someone shouted, "Save it for Raining Blood!"

Yep. The only time I've seen someone in a Cannibal Corpse shirt act as a pacifist.

How did you like the show this year? Something about it felt a little off to me.

Slayer was great, but yeah the crowd was pretty lame this year.

Just got back from the after-party in Indianapolis. I dressed up as Flavor Flav and drank briefly with Lemmy, who was dressed as a Blues Brother.

Further proof Lemmy is awesome, I've heard the Mayhem after-parties are epic

I wonder if Motorhead signed in ATL. Would have been upset if I missed that.

Fuck man, fuck..

I was really looking forward to this show, i mean super anticipating this shit!! I was so hyped at work on the day of the fest, telling everyone how excited i was for this fest, and how i'm so pumped and super excited to get off and see my favorite metal band of all time. Fucking pisses me off now that the fest is long gone and over. I wish, oh I wish they could have had the Sanbernadino date pushed to somewhere like late july or beginning of august. Atleast that way i would have been back to normal, because when i look back at it now i really wish i enjoyed mayhem fest, if it was this coming this week or sometime next, hell or anytime soon I would be fucking happy as hell and super excited as fuck to see this.. Like you wouldn't even imagine how fucking pumped i would be and how much of a great time i would have and could have had..

The point is, really fucking pisses me off that this fest is now long gone and over with, well at least for me and everyone else that lives in So Cal. This show felt like such a waste of time, and waste of a good day turned lame...oh and money.. :bouville:

damn, i hope slayer can play like a one off date here in cali or something before the year ends, >_>
